Richardson, 25, has been missing since 2009, when she was released from police custody in a remote area without car keys, a wallet or a cellphone.
Richardson, who may have been bipolar, was arrested for failing to pay an $89 bill at a Malibu restaurant. Witnesses said she was acting odd, despite having only one drink on her bill, telling staff and patrons she was from Mars and speaking gibberish.
After her arrest, she was released from a remote substation and vanished.
After Richardson's family complained about police efforts, the largest missing-person search in the area was launched. Drones were used to search the rugged Malibu hills.
Both Richardson's mother and father have filed lawsuits, alleging negligence on the behalf of police.
Rep. Maxine Waters has requested the FBI's involvement, because she said Richardson's civil rights may have been violated. Police have said they followed proper procedures before Richardson was released.
Even with the announcement of the discovery on Thursday, there is still controversy.
Michael Richardson, Mitrice's father, said police did not contact him before announcing that they had discovered his daughter's remains. KTLA reports:
Richardson's father, Michael, said officials never contacted him to confirm his daughter's death prior to the press conference. Instead, he says, he found out through the news media.
When asked why Michael Richardson was not informed, Baca grew visibly agitated and said that he himself had just found out the confirmation minutes before the news conference.
Baca responded saying, "I just got informed a half-an-hour ago. You expect me to tell the father immediately?"
The discovery brings a sad end to the search. Authorities seemed hopeful last month, after receiving what they believed were credible sightings.
I'm sure, though, that finding out what happened to his daughter will lead Michael Richardson to press harder for the details surrounding her release. The entire Richardson family and the public deserve to know.

I believe someone in that police station did something to Mitrice too. I find it odd that all of a sudden they say there was a sighting in Las Vegas and them BAM a week later, her remains appear. Sounds like they used Las Vegas as a diversion and then planted those bones.
omg, u took the words out of my mouth.. so sad.. if she was bipolar she needed help and medication not to be killed.. i feel so sorry for the family.. my heart goes out to them.. i hope they find her killer/s..
This girl never made it out of the station. I hope they get justice! I also will be praying that God will be the avenger and every person that laid a hand on this young women recieve their just reward.
No proof of violence, yet...had this been a blk man no one would care, especially mrs. waters. The police in this country is above the law. Remember, all of the innocent murdered men of police shootings--what is the sentence, justifiable shooting, his keys in his door could have been a gun.

This is a very fishy story. I hope her family finds closure. I know Ms. Richardson's spirit soars, however her soul is not at rest.

I AGREE WITH YOU. I DON'T BELIEVE ANYTHING THE POLICE SAID. I BELIEVE THEY ARE LYING AND HAVE ALWAYS BEEN LYING IN THIS CASE.
THAT'S WHY THE SHERIFF WAS SUCH AN A-HOLE DURING THE ANNOUCEMENT OF THE DISCOVERY OF HER BODY.
I BELIEVE THE REASON THEY NEVER SHOWED THE TAPE OF MITRICE LEAVING THE POLICE STATION IS BECAUSE SHE NEVER LEFT.
HOW CAN THEY HOLD A MEDIA CONFERENCE OF THEIR FINDINGS WITHOUT TALKING TO THE PARENTS TO CONFIRM IF THE BODY THEY FOUND WAS ACTUALLY MITRICE?
