MotherJones.com recently caused a stir by publishing a photo essay about a woman named Ms. Ruth. The old woman spends up to 12 hours a day, five to seven days per week, putting together outfits for members of the Ku Klux Klan. She blesses each outfit after its done and uses the money to take care of her 40-year-old handicapped daughter.
The story about Ms. Ruth is certainly interesting in that it appears that she is not necessarily a bad person. She simply believes in the KKK and thinks that what the organization does is good for America. Obviously, she lives on the side of ignorance, but the story is interesting primarily because it shows a side of the KKK that is usually closed off to the general public. Personally, I found myself thinking, "So THAT'S where they get their robes made!" It's not as if they pick them up in the Aryan Nation section of the local Wal-Mart.
The story about Ms. Ruth might also be interpreted as a reflection of how hate continues to exist in America. Our country has made significant progress since the civil rights movement, but there is much work left to be done. Organizations like the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the NAACP, the National Action Network, the Rainbow Push Coalition and others will continue to be needed in America for at least another 100 years.
One other interesting side effect of the story about Ms. Ruth and the KKK is that it shows the humanity of those who've been stung by the pain of learning to hate another human being for no reason. Most of the time, when we are angry toward others, there is an underlying cause of that anger. The same way the schoolyard bully was probably abused by a parent, many of those who carry this kind of anger feel that they are actually an underdog defending their territory. Some whites, especially those who worship the words of men like Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly, feel a strong sense of entitlement, which leads them to believe that the country they own is being taken over by others. Of course, they are wrong, since America belongs to no one. But the racism we see in corporate America, academia and other institutions is typically driven by those who expect that their way of doing things is the only way to do them.
What's also interesting is that while some of us wish to demonize Fox News viewers for being the only self-righteous, divisive people in America, this is clearly not the case. I receive e-mails on a regular basis from African Americans who have views that are just as tainted and mean-spirited as members of the KKK. These opinions might involve immigrants or any group that is different from our own, and sometimes they carry the same venom I hear from members of the klan. Fighting for your people is one thing, but fighting for true equality is another. Many of us never figure out the difference.

This is why we need the Black Panther Party to counteract and be prepared with a response to the KKK. We can't sit back like sitting ducks or go in as sheep to the slaughter. And, Dr. Boyce, I don't think you should blame the victim for his response to the racism directed towards him. Don't compare black people to racist white people. We did not start this. We have been the beneficiaries of their hate towards us. I feel they do not have to like us but if they step to us with aggression, it is suppose to be met with aggression not with hugs and kisses.

OK....so we have the Black Panthers for black ppl and KKK for the racist white ppl! Now where is the group for the middle ground.....the ones who care for both sides, that don't see race or hatred. Like myself is white and is married to a black man. If I had to ever take a side it would be with my husband because he is my husband and he is the father of my children. I wish this racism would end and I know it won't......

What we really need is to be able to address all of our concerns, fear, misconceptions in an educated manner and work together. Lets not act like none of use have issues or have said somethings in the back of our minds about a particular group. but at the end of the day if dosen't matter who's hand pulls you out of the fire it is just the fact that someone was kind enough to do so.

Excuse me ! You did not start this ? What about your black brothers that sold your ancestors into slavery ? If that isn't racism at its finest i don't know what is
This is the "new" denial of White racism. But let me point this out:Yes there were African chiefs who sold other Africans into slavery to Europeans. But please don't make it seem as if slavery was peculiar to Africa. EVERY culture has had slavery in one form or another. Usually the Africans who were sold to the Europeans were POWs,criminals, troublemakers and just about anyone else who the Chief didn't like.So he got rid or them and put a little change in his pockets besides the point. Didn't the Greeks,Romans,Persians, etc have wars? So I guess they would have slaves also? Why do you try to make it seem as if this was just in Africa? Another point I can make is this: If the European was so righteous and a "good" Christian, why didn't he buy the slaves and then release them? I'll tell you why, because he wanted some change in his pocket just like the African chief! Now please next time come with your "A" game and not that tired old BS!

I agree with you! But isn't it funny now that the Civil Rights era of the 60's is over certain White try to equate the Panthers to the Klan? Lol! They try to say that ANYTING with "Black" in it's title is racist!Lol! BET,HBCU's,Miss Black America, etc. But yet for all of their "intelligence" they never seem to search for WHY those things were/are needed. What would be the chances of having a Black Miss America in 1959? Lol! Slim and none. But as usual when we stop "beggin' at massa's table" and we get our own, either it would be destroyed(as in the 50's and 60's)or WE get called "racists",as in the present.Lol!

>>>>>> hello people, now use your brain cells. Which hate group in America has the greatest political influence today? the KKK or the FEMINISTS GROUPS? Yes, I said, feminist groups. The fact that they have forced so many anti-male policies and laws to come into affect in this country based solely on gender is astoninhing and dangerous-embracing on the same thought pattern of the past KKK masters. Battered women's syndrome, there is no battered husband or children's syndrome that can be used regularly to cause DA's not to file assault or murder charges against a female that claims abuse-nearly, 100% effective in every state and the civil rights and equal rights of men are set-aside for the best interest of women as a group, rather than the individual case by case use. A woman accuses and men are arrested-no due process, etc. A woman's word is fact and law. The civil rights of men are limited when their accuser/s are female. The KKK nolonger have this power and influence; it is women's time to enslave and harm the innocent Americans-males.
