The mixed response to Jean's announcement reflects the multitude of perceptions that various stakeholders have when it comes to the idea of Wyclef becoming president. I have spoken privately to friends in hip hop who've assured me that Wyclef has an infinite supply of love for his home country and wants to do what's right. But I've also met with friends who feel that Wyclef is a beacon of self-promotion who cares far less for Haiti than for his own bank account.
I am not in a position to judge Wyclef one way or the other. Also, it is difficult for nearly any American to come to terms with the complex history of Haiti and its relationship to the United States. But one thing that remains true is that Wyclef is no longer running for president, primarily because the powers that be have told him that he cannot.
In a statement, Wyclef had this to say:
"It is with a heavy heart that I tell you today that the board of elections in Haiti has disqualified me from my run for the presidency of the country. Though I disagree with the ruling, I respectfully accept the committee's final decision, and I urge my supporters to do the same. We must all honor the memories of those we've lost--whether in the earthquake, or at anytime--by responding peacefully and responsibly to this disappointment."
It may be the case that Wyclef's rejection by the board of elections was politically-driven. A man with so much international power and recognition is likely going to have quite a few enemies. Wyclef's presence as President of Haiti would keep attention on the country, but it would also risk reducing the credibility of the nation's top political appointment. One has to wonder how a man can be president of a country and still be a touring hip hop artist.
All the while, I fully expect that Wyclef can serve the country of Haiti in a dignified fashion without being its president. I also wonder if a man without any serious political experience needs to be president of any country, let alone one that needs so much specialized support. At the same time, I don't question Wyclef's love for Haiti, and I have no doubt that over the next 40 years, he will morph into one of the most significant socio-political figures in the history of his country.

The Board of Election in Haiti, is a "Complete Idiot". The past, Wyclef Jean, help organized the Telethon, He help organized We are the World. It made Millions, He has International Power,He has been generating money into Haiti; Wycef Jean, can get things done. Other Leaders, will more supports Wycef Jean, as President, than, those others..Listen, "who you know, you can ask to loan you some money, you does not know someone,He or She, can ONLY be a pan-handler".
What, I am saying, it would be more easier for Wycef Jean, for a loans or donations, but I WILL more Extremely difficult for someone that the World Leaders, do not know nothing about..
Wycef Jean, WILL BE, less supportive, in Haiti now.
"REJECTION, really hurts! I does not knew Wycef Jean, but I used my Common-sense.
I said, the board of Election in Haiti, made the biggest Mistakes..

I think what he sees as a haitian american is the hurt in the eyes of his people, and running for president would keep the focus on the many needs of the haitians. I'm sure everything he will do in the furture will be for the better of his people. God bless Wyclef and his family, in time you will become the president of Haiti

We must realize that the US, France, the UN, the IMF and corporations have made Haiti a slave nation. They like it that way as Haiti is rich in Natural resources and plenty of slave labor.
Doesn't anyone really get it. Our man Bill Clinton wants total control of the historic, black island nation. He is the one who shut Haiti's infrastructure down in 1995. They do not intend for Haiti to succeed and with Wyclif as Pres, it probably would.

If he wanted so badly to become pres of Haiti, he shld have ran before the earthquake. He shld have been a part of the political Arena years ago.But anyway, he can still make money by writing songs about his hurt.It is time for the Gvnmts of the world to find the right candidate to run Haiti.

First of all, what makes Wyclef think that he is qualified to run a country? Even a country like Haiti with no jobs, no education, no agriculture, no commerce, no housing, basically, no nothing.
I think that Wyclef's interest is not in being the President of Haiti, but getting his greedy little paws on all of those Haitian Restoration Funds that are being donated through various charities around the world. If he was really concerned about Haiti, that would be his place of residence and he would have been trying to uplift the country before the earthquake and before the donations started pouring in. I think it's obvious where is devotion lies and it isn't to the Haitian people, which is why he wasn't allowed to run. They aren't complete fools.

I agree with you Sidra. When I found out he payed himself to perform from the proceeds of his charity, my opinion of him has changed. I like his music a lot but I honestly believe that he is a crook who does not care about the Haitian people as much as he postulates. After he announced his intention to run, he was interviewed on American Morning on CNN and although he speaks several languages, it is obvious that he has not had the education necessary to preside over a developing nation. He is a musician and is not presidential material. I am also glad that the Haitian people saw through his facade.

That's the best news that Haiti could ever have heard! This clown isn't in the least qualifiied to be President of any country especailly one that really needs real leadership! He's nothing but another opportunist just like "Jesse Jackson" was when he tried twice to run for President, did anyone except ignorant blacks ever really give that fool a chance? Many ignorant people in Haiti too that are caught up in that same kind of stupidity! Thank God the powers that be stopped him, or Haiti would be in far worse shape! His election would also clearly show to the international communit at large that black people aren't to be taken seriously in any way!

Whoever is chosen for president of Haiti must be a puppet of United Snakes of AmeriKKKa. Wycleff is not AmeriKKKA's idea for president because he is not a person that would betray his own people.
