But here's the dirty little secret that most of us are not willing to accept: Alveda King actually represents millions of church-going African Americans. Also, her views are not nearly as outlandish as some would lead you to believe.
Alveda King is opposed to gay marriage, just like my mother. She doesn't believe in abortion, just like many members of my own family. She believes strongly in old school family values, similar to Bill Cosby. She is clearly a product of the traditional black church and represents a section of black America that liberals don't like to talk about. Many African Americans, whether we want to admit it or not, would agree with Alveda King on nearly every single issue.
The political schizophrenia of black America is largely rooted in the fact that we are among the most conservative members of the Democratic Party. To some extent, you might say that we are enslaved by Democrats, who simply hate us less than the Republicans. Poor black people to Republicans are like roaches destined for extermination. There's no place for us in the party, and Glenn Beck knows it.
One area where Alveda simply has it wrong is that Dr. King is claimed by the black church, but he was not always of the black church. He was rejected for standing up for the poor and speaking out agressively on social issues. He ended his life taking strong positions on worker rights and fighting against the war in Vietnam. He might have been in agreement with Alveda on topics like abortion and family values, but he wouldn't be standing with Glenn Beck, the war-mongering, anti-poor Republican who gets support from every Klansman and Neo-Nazi in America.
By aligning herself with the likes of Glenn Beck, Alveda King has undermined both her reputation in the black community and distorted the legacy of her uncle, Dr. King. It's one thing if you have something in common with Beck, but another thing to endorse him. Alveda would have been better to stand alone on her platform and engage in a more responsible way of sharing her values. At this point, she is falling for the same political double-speak that led to many blacks supporting George Bush in 2004.
It must also be stated, however, that Alveda can't be written off simply as a crackpot. I have many church-going members of my own family who would scream "amen" to nearly everything that Alveda has to say. She's every bit as black as any of us, and the perception of the legitimacy of her value system comes down to which of the issues matters most to the political observer. If you care about poor people, mass incarceration and terrible educational systems, then you can't possibly align yourself with Glenn Beck. But if gay marriage and abortion matter more, then you become Alveda King.
Alveda certainly has it wrong, but so do we all. By shoving liberal values down our collective throat as the price of admission, the Democrats are as much an awkward fit as the Republicans. Alveda represents the essence of that confusion, which is why it was only a matter of time before this was set to happen.

Boyce, appreciated your comments today. We are not one monolithic group. We all don't look alike so we definetly don't think alike, we are not CLONES. Alveda, do your thing. When we hear truth these days it sounds like something foreign.
It's okay to be an African American and NOT be a Democrat. No hate. We need to get rid of this group think mentality.

Dr. Watkins does make some good points, and I almost always disagree with him.
Like i cant understand how black folk rationalize voting for dems, when dems are for gay marriage.
I cant understand how black folk rationalize voting dems, when dems are hell bent on allowing illegals to occupy and then dominate black communites, thereby using up valuable social resources.
But Watkins explains this, its the price for being on the plantation.
You Kalynn are correct, we are indviduals, thus not all are on the dem plantation. I welcome Alveda King's stance, and support her being with Beck.
Whatever their motivation, or their politics, one thing is for sure. They are trying hard to bring folks together. thats a good thing, is it not?
Not many can say the same thing. All the left and So-called black leaders want is to keep all of us ignorant and on the plantation.
I agree its ok, not to be a Democrate, its ok to think for yourself. Its ok, really.

Alveda King is a DISGRACE to MLK's legacy and has NO business aligning herself with the likes of Glenn Beck.

To rlk: I'm black and I support gay marriage. Just as the article says, we are not monolithic in our views. You need to remember that.

I read these comments and just hear so much hate! Both Dr. Kings were love! Can we not be the same? Why is there so much hatred between black and white? I love my brothers and sisters no matter what their color is. Glen Beck is trying to continue Dr. Kings work by bringing us back to God and away from hate. Come on please quit looking at everyone as having some agenda to promote hate. We must love one another, as a Christian I don't endorse gay rights or abortion, I dont like the "message" but I LOVE the "messenger". We should all do the same. We must uphold the law and the constitution, and Godly foundation no matter what. That is what our country was built on. I love Alveda King and think she would make a great presidential candidate for the next election and we should make Stephen Brodin her running mate! Another great politician! I am white with Japanese American grandsons, an African American Grandson and a Hispanic American grandson, it is all about LOVE not the color or someones skin!

The simply fact of the matter is that if black people don't stick together as a powerful voting block something you refer to as "group think" they will lose any power they have. If black people starting voting for republicans 50% and Democrats 50% then neither party has any reason to listen to them.

I completely concur with your comments! That's also why blacks continue to be "stuck in neutral", and are not as proactive as other groups, or as engaged in the areas of politics, economics, and social issues ..say like the Latinos for example. It's become a war just to get blacks to do anything in their own communities, without pulling teeth, and still tha may have no efffect! We still to this day haven't yet discovered the simple formula for unity! Because we foolishly beieive that we all have to think alike, act alike, wear the same in some cases clowish clothes alike, and vote alike! Where are the leaders? I'm not talking about the Jesse Jacksons, or now Al Sharpton those guys only represent themselves and frankly are only a continuing embrassment! But, blacks still can't, or just don't want to open their eyes and bear witness to that fact! How completely ignorant can a people continue to be? I guess we'll soon find out!

If you ask the people that walked with Beck they haven't and won't do a thing to raise Martin L King, Jr. name. If Mr. King was alive they would find a way to put him down and in a grave. I've been looking for a positive in this march and the timing. Mr King was a man of peace and I can't think of a thing that Beck and Palin do to bring together this country. I see mean, mad and hate fiiled people.
I don't see a future with Beck and Palin in charge. If I a Blackman talked like them they would have me in jail. If I had a wish, I wish they would stop trying to upstage every event that Black people had to fight and died for and Miss King I hope you got paid.

WOW really all black people who go to church, which most get confused with loving the Lord are against Gay Marriage?!!! most off your pass the bucket preachers are in the closet! and it would be nice if people would stop talking about the gay community like we are not sitting in each and every one of your house holds wether you like it or not. Oh and this niece of Dr. King? she should be ashamed of herself she is a media whore and for what a city council seat, a senate run? what? please tell me what? because as far as i know homosexuality didn't just appear it was there when King was alive yet HE never preached separatism. I am sure that right along those little black boys and girls GAY FOLKS WERE MARCHING FOR FREEDOM TOO! I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT GAY PEOPLE CONTRIBUTED LARGE DONATIONS TO THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT! WHY DIDN'T YOU SEPARATE US THEN? I'LL TELL YOU WHY? BECAUSE THERE IS ONLY ONE COLOR IN AMERICA THAT IS ACCEPTED ANYWHERE YOU GO AND THATS GREEN! SO CUT IT OUT! NOW Marriage is solely about religion? marriage is about the ability to ensure that my family, my children are adequately taken care of in the event of my demise. Are your children superior to mine? What entitles you or that nut job niece of Dr. Kings to treat me like a second class citizen? who are you to determine which of my civil liberties I am allowed to practice? are you not Black were you not treated the same way? now Alveda gets a pass to discriminate and hide behind the church the same exact way slave owners did when they told the slaves the bible says your supposed to be slaves. REALLY?!! WELL I GUARANTEE YOU THAT IF ALL OF US GAY PEOPLE STOPPED PAYING TAXES AND STOPPED TITHING THE WORLD WOULD BE IN TROUBLE! IT'S FUNNY PEOPLE LIKE ALVEDA USUALLY LIVE IN VERY FRAGILE GLASS HOUSES SO SHE SHOULD'NT THROW STONES. OH AND BEFORE SHE TAKES THAT WALK WITH THAT CLANS MEN SHE SHOULD READ HER BIBLE ABOUT JUDGING OOPS I MEAN UNLESS SHE HAS CHANGED HER LAST NAME TO GOD!
