But here's the dirty little secret that most of us are not willing to accept: Alveda King actually represents millions of church-going African Americans. Also, her views are not nearly as outlandish as some would lead you to believe.
Alveda King is opposed to gay marriage, just like my mother. She doesn't believe in abortion, just like many members of my own family. She believes strongly in old school family values, similar to Bill Cosby. She is clearly a product of the traditional black church and represents a section of black America that liberals don't like to talk about. Many African Americans, whether we want to admit it or not, would agree with Alveda King on nearly every single issue.
The political schizophrenia of black America is largely rooted in the fact that we are among the most conservative members of the Democratic Party. To some extent, you might say that we are enslaved by Democrats, who simply hate us less than the Republicans. Poor black people to Republicans are like roaches destined for extermination. There's no place for us in the party, and Glenn Beck knows it.
One area where Alveda simply has it wrong is that Dr. King is claimed by the black church, but he was not always of the black church. He was rejected for standing up for the poor and speaking out agressively on social issues. He ended his life taking strong positions on worker rights and fighting against the war in Vietnam. He might have been in agreement with Alveda on topics like abortion and family values, but he wouldn't be standing with Glenn Beck, the war-mongering, anti-poor Republican who gets support from every Klansman and Neo-Nazi in America.
By aligning herself with the likes of Glenn Beck, Alveda King has undermined both her reputation in the black community and distorted the legacy of her uncle, Dr. King. It's one thing if you have something in common with Beck, but another thing to endorse him. Alveda would have been better to stand alone on her platform and engage in a more responsible way of sharing her values. At this point, she is falling for the same political double-speak that led to many blacks supporting George Bush in 2004.
It must also be stated, however, that Alveda can't be written off simply as a crackpot. I have many church-going members of my own family who would scream "amen" to nearly everything that Alveda has to say. She's every bit as black as any of us, and the perception of the legitimacy of her value system comes down to which of the issues matters most to the political observer. If you care about poor people, mass incarceration and terrible educational systems, then you can't possibly align yourself with Glenn Beck. But if gay marriage and abortion matter more, then you become Alveda King.
Alveda certainly has it wrong, but so do we all. By shoving liberal values down our collective throat as the price of admission, the Democrats are as much an awkward fit as the Republicans. Alveda represents the essence of that confusion, which is why it was only a matter of time before this was set to happen.

The point is poster Lee; all the crooked Republican dealings were exposed with the crook Nixon during the 70's on up to now. Breaking in places, wiretapping, DRUG smuggling using military planes and boats, lying under oath, cover-ups, money washing, secret armies, secret under the table war expenses(Bush) weapons smuggling, Patriot Act(Bush) this is just off the top of my head. It may be the wrong year, but same criminal Republicans, you can't clean them up. But you try to keep learning. One day you might see the light. And stop trying to change the subject about that Devil woman Alveda King!

I AM SICK OF BLACK COLUMNISTS WHO CRITICIZE TRUTH-TELLERS, who paint everyone as a racist if they don't tow the black party line. I AM SICK OF BLACK COLUMNISTS who excuse black peoples' wrongdoing, and run to labelling anyone "racist" who point out the errors of black peoples' ways: We've got Rangel and Waters and (convicted) Jefferson and Eddie Bernice Johnson -- all black people, apparently standing on the wrong side of ethical behavior. Where are the black people decrying these people and their suspiciously bad ways? Like this columnist, calling Beck's March "bogus". If Beck's march was Bogus what have you to say about Sharpton's much smaller MLK march -- absent of MLK's niece Alveda? You don't call his march "bogus"? Why this "group-think" prejudice against Beck? Why do we as a people run so fast from Truth into the comfortable arms of amoral, unpatriotic, godless liberalism?

This is the reason why there is still racism in the US. This man is a blatant racist...it's obvious by this ridiculous tirade against a black woman siding with a prominent white commentator. Using "enslaved" in the article with respect to the relationship he feels Democrats and the black population have is completely unnecessary and only contributes to the ideas that white people are still trying to enslave or bring down the black population.
It annoys me to no end that there are still black people in this world that feel this way and use a position such as reporter, politician, revered, etc to try to incite racial hatred. I have many black friends who agree with me...they also can't understand why some people in the black community cannot allow the past to be part of the past and move forward. There is not a single black person in the country that has been affected by slavery and I think the mention of being held down in society because of slavery is absolutely ludicrous for someone of this mans position to use. Racism is very active unfortunately in the country...however I don't think it's white people doing most of the hating.
Dr. Watkins, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Yet, ironically, Bayard Ruston, advisor to Martin Luther King Jr. and organizer of the famous 1963 civil rights march in D.C., was an open homosexual.

The writer views in this article is very bias and certainly is oppose to what Glen Beck is doing. If you ever sit and listen Beck's show, You will certainly learn more black history than you would ever been thought in your classrooms. Give Beck a break and cut him some slack. I think he does an excellent show and give him honors for the amount of time and research that he puts into producing one of his 1hr. program. Wise up writer and remove the scales from your eyes before its too late.

Where did you get that glen beck is a racist? This seems to be a slanderous statement. Send me a video, or a comment that he made that he is a racist! And for the record, im black. I'm so sick of black folks crying racism when its just a figment of there imagination. Does Racism exist? yes. It will always exist! You cant erase mankind from this earth. Racism, is just a form of discrimination! And black people discriminate just like white people. And yes, some blacks are racist! i have plenty in my own family. but Dr Watkins, to slander an individual because his social policies dont line up with yours doesn't mean that he is racist! Im sure, your a democrat, and i tell you you probably have just as many racist in that political party as well. Please study your history and realize who was the Racist party. Just visit there website theyll tell you themselves what they stand for and the agenda that there pushing within the party! But, dont take my word for it, im sure im just an uncle Tom to you.
