Regina King Angry at the Emmys for Lack of Diversity, While The Rest of Us Look for Jobs

OK, so Regina King. She's a great actress and I'm a huge fan. However, Little Brenda kicked up a big stink this week. In a letter to the Huffington Post, she railed on Hollywood's recent Emmy Awards for not including enough people of color. She takes issue with the fact that since the creation of the Emmy awards in 1949, only 53 non-white actors have been nominated out of 1,000 possible nominations in the top four acting categories for drama and comedy.

She also is annoyed that a photograph of True Blood actress Rutina Wesley was featured along with a caption that said "Regina King."

Her anger reflects an oft expressed sentiment by black hollywood actresses who find that there are few, if any, roles of substance ever created for them. Their frustration is understandable. It's hard being a black woman in Hollywood. All the good roles go to white women, the black films Hollywood is willing to produce are all sophomoric comedies, etc... Got it.

That being said, all I could muster in response to her rant was, who cares?

King probably makes more for one episode of Southland than most people (including me) make in a year. And call me crazy, but there's something about widespread unemployment, fools burning korans, political unrest, and our kids killing each other in the streets, that makes me look at her little letter and think: are you f*cking kidding me?

So the Emmys are generally all white. So you were incorrectly captioned. Yes they all think we look alike, so you'll never beat out Angelina Jolie for a part, and yes, Hollywood will continue to make stupid black movies. I have three words in response: it's a recession. You thought I was gonna say, "you go girl ?" I care so little about who was honored at the Emmys, its unbelievable. I don't even think black people WATCH the Emmys.

In the midst of the challenges our country is facing, forgive me if I am not sympathetic to a career actress whining about some random Hollywood award circle-jerk ceremony. King has been making more money than my parents put together since she was about 14. I'm so sorry you don't get to be Tomb Raider or Elektra. My heart bleeds.

Frankly the only issue I could care even a little less about, was her anger at the glaring omission of Alaina Reed from the Emmy's popular In Memoriam segment. Reed was a staple of the popular Sesame Street series as "Olivia Robinson" for twelve years and one of Kings co-stars on "227." We all grew up with "Olivia" and she probably taught most of us X'ers how to read or count to ten or something. So that WAS pretty jacked up that she wasn't included.

So let's all raise a glass for Alaina Reed!

As for Regina King...whatever, go give somebody a job.
