Unless you've been living under a rock, you probably know about the sexual coercion lawsuit being filed against Bishop Eddie Long, a highly respected pastor in Atlanta. Bishop Long is the head of the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church and also runs the LongFellows mentoring program, structured to mentor boys from ages 13 to 18.
One of the interesting things about the academy is that it is designed to help young men along a "masculine journey" to manhood. The organization is also set up to teach "sexual purity" and physical fitness. Two of the young men who were involved in this organization are the ones filing suit against Long.
The program is able to brag about having a 100 percent high school graduation rate, which is virtually unheard of for black boys in public schools. One of the boys, Jamal Parris, said that Bishop Long claimed he would "protect him and never let another man hurt him." He says that Long was a father figure to him.
His accusers say that Bishop Long used the bible to justify their sexual activity; however, there are others who say that the program helped them to significantly improve their lives. One of the graduates, Marcus Hughes, says that Long was a "spiritual father." Hughes is now the director of the program. He did not, however, comment on the case when contacted by the media.
"This idea that the pastor is in charge, that the pastor should be paid a lot of money, that people should listen to the pastor ... these are common themes that run through these scandals involving these pastors alleged to have coerced their congregants in to either giving them money or having sex with them," Sarah Posner author of "God's Profits," told the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
No pun intended, but the Eddie Long scandal has had me scratching my head for a very long time now (did you get the corny joke?). I'm trying to sort fact from fiction and working to determine that which is relevant vs. meaningless. The allegations are clearly disturbing, and Long is potentially positioned with both legal and ethical problems resulting from this case.
An attorney is going to analyze the Long case differently from a parishioner, who might see the case differently from any random observer watching all this unfold in the media. As I went to speak on the matter on CNN and MSNBC, I spent time seeking truth in my own heart so that I might be able to provide insight that is independent of my own biases. There are quite a few ways to determine whether or not Long actually did something wrong.
The first question that many people are asking is whether or not Eddie Long is gay. If he is, that puts him in direct contrast with his conservative Republican, anti-gay public image, effectively making him look like a serious hypocrite. His congregation would also have reason to be disappointed with Long for breaking the word of God while preaching it. I am sure there may be some bible verse somewhere that exonerates him no matter what he might have done, but that wouldn't fly very far with me.
Then, there is the legal issue of whether or not he actually coerced these young men in to having sex. That's where I am led to question the hard ball negotiating tactics of the plantiff's attorney, B.J. Bernstein. While Bernstein is doing a very good job of proving that Long bought gifts for the young men and sent pictures of himself looking physically fit in the mirror, she has not yet (in my mind), proven that he forced anyone to have sex with him. By being so aggressive in the beginning, it may be the case that Bernstein is working to hold Long's public image hostage to negotiate a higher dollar figure for the settlement. Proving that Eddie Long might be gay is very different from proving that he coerced someone in to having sex with him.
I can't agree with the idea of letting Eddie Long off the hook, at least not until all the evidence is made available. If it were the case that he condemned gay men during the day and slept with them at night, this seriously undermines his credibility as a spiritual adviser to the thousands of people who follow him. Also, the age of the boys at the time Bishop Long allegedly became sexually involved with them could also be problematic. If the boys were over the age of 18 and there was mutual attraction, though, then who am I to stand in the way of true love?
One final point that must be considered in the case of Bishop Eddie Long is the fact that he may possibly be a victim. It is not inconceivable that the sudden decision of the plaintiffs to file suit was driven by some kind of disgruntlement. There was once a very odd case here at Syracuse University, where a professor was sleeping with a student.
The student filed sexual misconduct charges against the professor months after the end of the relationship. While I would never condone the idea of a professor sleeping with a student (an absolute no-no), the case appeared to be one party exploiting the vulnerability of another. So, like the professor silly enough to risk his entire career to sleep with a student, a famous pastor would be risking his reputation by sleeping with anyone in his congregation. When things go wrong, the public figure has a lot to lose and people sometimes take advantage of that.
In order for the accusations against Long to be fraudulent, it would not have to be the case that Bishop Eddie Long is being falsely portrayed as being gay or bisexual. Instead, he may actually have a vulnerability in his sex life that is being exploited by those who are seeking to publicly extort money from him. This is not out of the question, so perhaps all options should be considered before we condemn Bishop Long to both hell and the poorhouse for whatever it is that he's accused of doing.
One last thing we shouldn't do is believe any and everything Bishop Long says without questioning him. One of the reasons Catholic priests were able to victimize so many young people over the years is because no one believed the children when they came to discuss what had happened to them. The priest was beyond being questioned, which opened the door for sexual predators to do their dirty work. Protecting our kids is paramount, but we must also protect adults from being falsely accused. This case is far from over.

As yourself...
If one’s (EXORBITANT) worldly possessions originate from one’s manipulation of scripture, don’t you think if god were around he would bum rush the church and smash them to the ground?
Don’t you think god frowns upon those using his money to buy a Bentley and private jet as opposed to a prius and flying coach? Don’t you think god is owed better fiscal management than that?
Seems to me those that draw others to their parish then are able to make a few bucks on the side with contacts, books, lectures, public appearances, etc, should be doing less bling’n with a windfall that is not meant to be theirs.
Being a “scholar” takes years of learning and passing exams in college.
What are the credentials for becoming a bishop?... (Money to buy the certificate).
QUACK QUACK!!

Dr. Boyce, now you are the "scholar" you know if someone sleeps with the opposite sex they are GAY. It's staring you in the face. As far as the boys being "forced" to have sex. Come on scholar, Eddie Long started with these boys when they were 14. Eddie Long is a spiritual "authoritative" figure. All that along says these boys were young and brain washed by someone they looked up to. Now put the question in perspective to yourself if you can't see this plain and clear. If you have sex with a male are you gay? If you start with boys at the age of 14 and you are their professor you can sure say "you have had a significant influence" over their lives. Especially when you pull out one of your textbooks and interpet "your" meaning of brotherly love. If you sent pictures of yourself (any pictures) to your students that would be inappropriate under ANY circumstance. I have a 16 year old son if we were attending Eddie Long's church I sure would have put my son in his mentoring school. Right now I would like I'm sure the parents at his church with children in the mentor program would be asking. "Did Bishop Long touch you? Now, tell mama truth, you ain't in trouble. Mama just want to know." I read the lawsuit again and my heart began to break and I wanted to cry. This is especially sad for the boys who were the victims.

This is sad. If Eddie Long went outside of his role and had consensual sex with a man or two or 20, he would have lots of company in doing that. What concerns me is that he is charged with grooming and recruiting in his own church family. That is the method used by Catholic priests for centuries and it is revolting.
Surely any thinking person would be very careful about running a boy's school. Didn't he think flying these young men around the world might look suspect? Didn't he think sleeping in the same room might raise some questions? Why would he do any of that at all? Catholic priests really felt above the law and protected by their sterling reputations.
Eddie Long's attorney quickly pointed out that these young men have no credibility. That is an alarming red flag for me. All he can say is that these boys are liars? That is a very flimsy defense.
I think there is more to come out in the open here.
Why would these young men who loved and trust him, who received gifts and jobs and an education just turn on him and lie about this? It makes no sense.
I could see if a "trick" tried to shake him down. That could be expected.
But these charges are withing that large family. It does not look good.

You are right about one thing, it dose not make sense, look very close at the gainfulness, if you know the accusers what is their make-up before and after, and no it is not unusual to stay in a room with a group of men, all of you go back in your own mind, "sleep over’s" just a week ago a group of five young men 18-28 slept at my house on the living room floor, one of the young men was sleeping with his mouth open and as a joke another one put his toe in is mouth, took a picture "funny now" right, but if he was a prominent person not so funny, or he latter becomes prominent bad idea, and one of them has a hidden reason.
All I am saying "just wait"
As one Prominent person has already said "VEIW THE HOLD TAPE"

"I am sure there may be some bible verse somewhere that exonerates him no matter what he might have done, but that wouldn't fly very far with me".
No where in the bible is this to be found, but it does say in cornithians & romans that type of lifestyle was the norm until they came to christ, if they are those thinking that they can combine there homosexual lifestyle such as the episcopal church with the ordained minister "gene robinson" who is misleading church members who have children in attendance,or other church's with similar teaching such as many other church's who have signed upto same sex marriages, equal opportunities, not bothering to vet those who teach and pastor, remember dr boyce that their is truth and error, always always check out the church doctrine and what they believe in and if it not the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth keep on walking, gene robinson and others who are homosexual failed to read 1 cornithians 6:9-10. If you Mr boyce are looking personally for an excuse not to come to christ if you are looking to the church for that excuse like so many, you are mistaken, everyone including bishop long will have to give an account on the day of judgement, why they choose to accept the free gift of christ, there will be no excuse for anyone, also the bishop and priest know if they have read the bible that they will be judged by God with a higher order.
In the mean time enjoy the Joke, but I don't find it funny I find it sad.

Mega churches lead by the self-greed promoters in sheeps clothing --- "your kingdom falling". God said this in his word. Christians, follow Christ, not man. They're in the flesh just you & me and the scriptures plainly reads, "no good thing dwells in the flesh". It's the will to do what is right! Eddie Long flexing his biceps over the pulpit just entertaining the flock. Listen to the spirit of God speaking and moving church, God is moving and uncovering dirt in the church. Lookout Creflo and others, you are next!!!! Church, save yourself.

People cannot save themselves. Doesn't your Bible ask the question, how can people hear from God without a preacher, and how can a man preach unless he be sent?" Mega churches are nothing new, Jesus had a mega church. How many thousands of people showed up to hear Jesus preach the sermon on the mount?
Furthermore, if Long is guilty, God will be willing to forgive him, and bless him in Heaven for what he did for the church up until last Sunday, but God just can't use Long again like He used to anymore.

Wake up People!! If the Pharisees and Saducees(Christians) persecuted Jesus and lied on him, what makes any other believer exempt? This is purely the devil's strategy to shame God. This will never, ever happen. God is not mocked by any means. We are in a spirtual war. Believe that! The church is under attack. Let God be God! His thoughts are not our thoughts, and his ways are higher than our ways. We don't know the half of what is going on. He is without sin cast the first stone!
Who among you have not sin. If anyone say they have not sinned is a liar. The truth is not in them.
Only the Lord is the righteous judge!
Bishop Eddie Long was wise in what he did or did not say. Whosoever keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.
