I woke up early to go to the website for the New Birth Missionary Baptist church. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I knew that Bishop Eddie Long would be convincing. Every bit of his charisma and experience would be needed to manage the complex set of allegations against him for sexually abusing some of his members.
I'll lay out some notable quotes by Bishop Eddie Long this morning and let you judge much of it for yourself. What I can say, though, is that Bishop Long seemed to say a great deal without saying much:
"I'll be here next week."
Perhaps that means that he's not going to resign. I look forward to seeing if he is going to be preaching next Sunday.
"[This is] probably the most difficult time in my entire life. I want to talk to you for a moment about how to handle painful and difficult situations."
He seemed to want to make this into a teachable moment for his congregation, but he didn't spend a great deal of time teaching, since his address was only about 15 to 20 minutes long.
"We will not allow the present pain to cause us to abandon our righteous commitment and stand."
This sounded like he was going to lay down some bad news for the congregation. Perhaps he's asking the church to stand with him during this difficult time, which they seemed ready and willing to do.
"There have been allegations and attacks made on me. I have never in my life portrayed myself as a perfect man. But I am NOT the man that's being portrayed on the television. That's not me."
This statement was incredibly vague, implying that he may or may not be guilty of the allegations against him. To say that you are not the man being portrayed in the media doesn't mean you're innocent. It simply means that you may be slightly different from the way the accusers are describing you. Nearly any guilty or innocent person can make this statement.
"By the counsel of my lawyers, they have advised me not to try this case in the media. I will not try this case in the media. It will be tried in the court of justice."
This statement was expected. Again, it says nothing about guilt or innocence.
"I've been accused, I'm under attack....but this thing, I'm gonna fight."
This statement means that the situation is far from over. I expect an interesting battle behind the scenes as attorneys squabble over the amount of the settlement. I would be surprised to see this get as far as a jury trial, especially if other accusers continue to step forward. This may open up a Tiger Woods -like can of worms for Bishop Eddie Long in the event that he actually has engaged in wrong-doing.
"I feel like David against Goliath. But I'll tell you what, I've got five rocks and I haven't thrown one yet."
As you can see, Bishop Eddie Long has made it clear that he's going to fight the charges. He does not, however, go in to any detail about his guilt or innocence. So while he must be given credit for addressing his congregation, he cannot be given credit for being innocent of the charges against him. Perhaps the court of law can help us to sort these things out.

Also, lie detectors do not tell "lies." It is based solely upon the body's reactions - which can be triggered by anything. I was interviewing for a position in the police department and they put off scheduling my polygraph because I had a headache that day. It gauges your blood pressure, changes in heart rate, and other physiological factors. Fear and anxiety can also play a role in the results. While I do believe it can be beneficial sometimes, in cases as emotionally charged as this, I'm not sure that the answers would be reliable.

Those 4 young guys need to watch their backs for sure. This Bishop gives every sign that he would rather take them down (literally) than to go down. He is willing to fall down on his sword rather than to admit anything. You can be sure he and his lawyer will wait them out, and they with no means of support, probably, will wither. These guys with little likelihood of getting jobs or a strong support system will be given a little bit of change and the case will quietly go away, and the Bishop and his church will act as though nothing happened.

It's probably a true incident(s), but the young men were "of age", older than 16, 17, so they were practically grown men. Age of consent. So the reverend, if he did do these things and I have no reason not to believe it (there were 4 that came forward), he was smart to do it with "age of consent" men.
If I was his wife, I would get an aids test.

A black pastor can be caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy, and his flock of sheeple still wouldn't believe that anything was going on. Blacks have a historical blind faith not in their church, but in their church leaders, and like cockroaches, these church leaders can survive a nuclear holocaust. Having said this, Long is going to run out the clock until the media loses interest, then he's going to settle, retreat from the public eye, then make a spectacular comeback. Anyone remember Michael Jackson? He survived TWO allegations like this, and came back both times, bigger than ever.

And while we're on the subject of Michael, if you remember, he came out and emphatically denied any wrongdoing. Even took out airtime for a commercial to declaare "the allegations against me are false." The Bishop has done nothing of the sort. Additionally, Michael survived not one, but two blithering criminal trials, settling one and successfully defending himself in the other. The second accuser's father even committed suicide later and the accuser said he made up the story. This situation is very different. Although, if there really are 30 accusers, it's just a matter of time before the district attorney retracts their original statement and gets involved. It is an election year, and a child predator in their midsts for all these years-heaven's no!

Blind allegiance? I don't think so. Remember the abuse scandal with Juanita Bynum and Thomas Weeks....the ministry went belly up. There are others too. If he ever admits this the sheep will scatter. I just want to know how he explained those photos to his wife.

These are serious charges. Black people need to view this objectively. I blame parents more than the pastors. 30 boys? it means 30 parents (men and women) did not instruct their children properly and somehow 30 children were vulnerable. How and how long? Somebody did not get what they wanted out of these dealings. Sex is a weak power broker and men tend to possess a pathological sexuality (then shun responsibilty) They blame sexual weakness on whatever: fear, women, alcohol, lack of a father, access to money..what ever works. I see no reason to condemn the Black church,as many are doing - it was a man who did these acts. God had nothing to do with it. American fears a black man in power, many black people don't know how to handle power with discernment.
Black people are responsible for the demise of the power of the black church - they gave up this power for money.

Amen! Amen! Amen! That has been my question also where were all the mothers while their sheepsters were being lusciuosly lavished all around the world? Then one of the long lost fathers of one of the young men is saying the bishop took his place and he was so hurt when he heard his son call him dad. Come on people trix are for kids silly wabbits! Once again an innocent man will fight for truth and the guilty will settle.
