I woke up early to go to the website for the New Birth Missionary Baptist church. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I knew that Bishop Eddie Long would be convincing. Every bit of his charisma and experience would be needed to manage the complex set of allegations against him for sexually abusing some of his members.
I'll lay out some notable quotes by Bishop Eddie Long this morning and let you judge much of it for yourself. What I can say, though, is that Bishop Long seemed to say a great deal without saying much:
"I'll be here next week."
Perhaps that means that he's not going to resign. I look forward to seeing if he is going to be preaching next Sunday.
"[This is] probably the most difficult time in my entire life. I want to talk to you for a moment about how to handle painful and difficult situations."
He seemed to want to make this into a teachable moment for his congregation, but he didn't spend a great deal of time teaching, since his address was only about 15 to 20 minutes long.
"We will not allow the present pain to cause us to abandon our righteous commitment and stand."
This sounded like he was going to lay down some bad news for the congregation. Perhaps he's asking the church to stand with him during this difficult time, which they seemed ready and willing to do.
"There have been allegations and attacks made on me. I have never in my life portrayed myself as a perfect man. But I am NOT the man that's being portrayed on the television. That's not me."
This statement was incredibly vague, implying that he may or may not be guilty of the allegations against him. To say that you are not the man being portrayed in the media doesn't mean you're innocent. It simply means that you may be slightly different from the way the accusers are describing you. Nearly any guilty or innocent person can make this statement.
"By the counsel of my lawyers, they have advised me not to try this case in the media. I will not try this case in the media. It will be tried in the court of justice."
This statement was expected. Again, it says nothing about guilt or innocence.
"I've been accused, I'm under attack....but this thing, I'm gonna fight."
This statement means that the situation is far from over. I expect an interesting battle behind the scenes as attorneys squabble over the amount of the settlement. I would be surprised to see this get as far as a jury trial, especially if other accusers continue to step forward. This may open up a Tiger Woods -like can of worms for Bishop Eddie Long in the event that he actually has engaged in wrong-doing.
"I feel like David against Goliath. But I'll tell you what, I've got five rocks and I haven't thrown one yet."
As you can see, Bishop Eddie Long has made it clear that he's going to fight the charges. He does not, however, go in to any detail about his guilt or innocence. So while he must be given credit for addressing his congregation, he cannot be given credit for being innocent of the charges against him. Perhaps the court of law can help us to sort these things out.

folks at new birth need to go read the book called
"Snakes in the pulpit" In it author Ruben Armstrong
stated that youth pastors had informed him that bishop Long was molesting and sleeping with young boys! This was written two years ago, but like the catholic church, they looked the other way.

These comments are interesting....i don't believe in pre-judging anyone..who's 100% innocent??? The bishop is human like you and I. We all have hidden desires or secrets, he's not superhuman because he preaches well. I think people think that because a man shares the word of God and has so much respect that he is special. Come on people he's a man like you and I. I'm not saying what's right or wrong, i'm saying he's human, he has weaknesses. but some people who say (he couldn't have done this.) are the ones tripping me out. why could he have not done this????don't be so gullible, just because you love him and look up to him doesn't mean what he did is impossible. (if he did it) I say he did it, and no I don't know the man, in fact i never even heard him preach, but one thing i do know is, anything is possible, the devil can jump any one, at any time. ("stay awake")Now doing it is one thing but lying about it is another thing...take your lick, ask for forgiveness and move on. I say he's guilty because my 54 years on this earth has shown me one thing for sure, when these media guys air your dirt, they usually have some serious evidence. everyone should know about the electronic paper-trail, all his activities are recorded somewhere, (airport records, credit card reports, ect... and most respected news reporters know they can't afford to slander people, it's not healthy for there reputations or future. it's like the FBI, when they approach you, don't lie, (they already got you in most cases before they even meet you, and they only come when they got what they need( all you can do is make things worse by lying. I'm a man and most other men know. ( call it a man thing if you must.) and everybody say's " I just want to know the truth." who in the hell are you? Why do you deserve to know the truth? why don't you tell the truth. The truth is right in front of you. wake-up wake-up, wake-up. if he is walking through the valley of the shadow of death, he picked that road. I thank him for all the people he lead to the Lord, and we should never dis-count that. and for you people who are loving this kind of stuff (bad talk about mega preachers) don't hate...working for the Lord is a great position to hold, in fact I choose it over working on the devil's payroll. I believe God wants all of us to be rich, in faith, spiritually and monetarily. and if the devil pays well, certainly God's gifts are better. Now the world is looking at T.D Jakes, Cleflo, joel O., and others, and that's not fair. if these guys are fakes, God will reveal them. "Whatever tree that does not bear good fruit will be chopped down, and thrown into the fire." so as you can see, God will do His thing, we need to do ours. Pray for the man and for the weak minded people who are searching for Christ in a man..Christ is within you...now go back to work and have a great day...love you...UncleMike N.O.

I still belive in Bishop Eddie Long. I think that Bishop and New Birth are going through a real test and so is the entire christian world to see if we can stand in prayer through this difficult and heartbreaking time.

A mega-church and not one discerning member. Surely with 30,000 members you would thought that one member
would have been placed there by God. Was this a SPIRIT FILLED body ?
