I watched all the glad-handing and backslapping and smiles and pledges of success around the $100 million gift from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (pictured right) to the failing Newark school system announced on the Oprah show last week.
But how will money translate to better grades for Newark's public school children?
Maybe New Jersey officials need to take the cash and split it up among Newark parents in exchange for a binding pledge to read to their children from their first night on the planet and every night after that until they hit their teens.
I think that over time, compelling parents to read to their children especially in their first years of life would provide better results than whatever scheme the state employs to spend the gift funding.
Okay, paying parents to read to their kids isn't a practical solution but it does underscore where the battle to improve test scores of minority kids needs to be fought most fiercely - at home.
We simply need parents to stop paying lip service about wanting a better education for their children and work for it. From day one, learning colors, forming words, and counting off numbers, provide the basis of what can be a rewarding educational experience.
We need parents to send their kids to school not only ready, but eager to learn.
And good parents, who are truly a child's first teacher, never think of handing that important responsibility off to an educator who is being paid to be there.
They realize that teachers have children for six hours a school day and those other 18 hours fall under a parent's watch.
One thing is certain.
We know money isn't the problem in most urban school districts, especially Newark. The Newark school district spends roughly $23,000 per year per pupil while the national average is $9,500. Yet only half of Newark's school children graduate.
So exactly what is the problem?
Some racists and quack researchers may come to the conclusion that black kids simply aren't as smart as white kids as was hinted at in the controversial book, "The Bell Curve", in 1994.
Research I've seen over the years says that kids, regardless of race, start off pretty much the same. But when they reach pre-school, the sad differences in scholastic achievement start to show.
There is no excuse for black children, who make up the largest portion of Newark's school population, to perform so poorly. None.
The Facebook money might help build up some labs and gyms for Newark students, but if you really want to see improvement, let's get parents to stop talking about better education and start doing their part.

While I can't argue the social and educational benefits of reading to children, I find that paying parents to read to children a little disturbing. First of all, it implies that black parents have to be paid to do things that lie within their areas of parental responsibilities, second, it belies a lack of understanding of literacy issues within the black family, and the black community, and finally, it ignores research based alternatives that are far more effective, and far less expensive. First of all, I think we we can employ men and women who are incarcerated, to record books into an MP3 format, promote "Turn the TV Off," programs, and we can finance or support more literacy programs and contests in local schools.

While we're at it let's pay to have the irresponsible parents feed, bathe, walk, talk, breast feed, cook nutritious meals, change diapers and look after their kids when they're sick.
It sounds like a really good idea.(Sarcasm intended). Just another proposed hand-out!
Other than letting inexperienced children raise children, how about mandatory parenting classes?
I'm tired of the "Aint nobody gon tel me how to rais my keeds" Bull shi--

so basically they want 2 bribe a parent 2 teach THEIR CHILDREN their abc's n 123's. how bout they birthed them and they should encourage them 2 learn as much as possible. instead of allowing them 2 hang out all evening n night, allowing them 2 watch tv all day, and play video games - they should get them a library card to encourage them to read and write. it's a tough task when the children enter their teens so it's good to start early.

Laura please shut the hell up your comments are not only harsh but straight up ignorant. I hate when people quote useless statistics. LEt's stop with the should of could of mentality, and focus on fixing the problem. I am pro-choice and also pro-family. I agree parents need to play they part and spend more time educating their youth. I remember my mom reading to me and also taking me to buy books. I also spent many summers in enrichment programs not running the streets. The problems lies with parents not knowing how to be parents and host of other social ills. Like section 8 housing not allowing males in the home. Prison systems that make hard for reform criminals to get on their feet. Mothers having to work long hours since a father is not present. The lack of sex education in the schools. And my favorite the lack unity and culture awareness in our communities today. I am a proud product of Newark and they are some talented youth in these schools. They just need direction and mentors.

L. Merriott: The #1 group trapped in poverty are single female -headed households--NO marriage--sadly, blacks have a 70% out--of-wedlock birth
rate
JL: The 70% figure is very misleading.
Only 44% of Black women "have never been married"...while 56% are either married, divorced or single. So the majority of Black women are or have been married.
The 44% are having more children than married/divorced/widowed Black women.
Two, NOT all single-female headed households are living in poverty. Many are college-educated, make over $35,000 per year, etc.
L. Merriott: ALL related to the FACT from the CDC that blacksengage in pre-marital sex at higher rates and at younger ages than their peers-_THUS more negative consequences!
JL: No, it's not.
The high HIV/AIDS rates originates from "HIV-AIDS-infected men coming from prison and having sex with their girlfriends and wives. Two, another contributor is the sharing of infected needles AND drug-seeking people trading sex for drugs.
Merriott's numbers came from a White supremacist website called Stormfront.
L. Merriott: We know that black youth engage in higher rates of criminal behavior and on
more black victims-
JL: So funny.
Most crime happens WITHIN groups, meaning Blacks are more likely to rob, rape, steal from, or kill other Blacks while Whites are more likely to rob, rape, steal, and kill other Whites, and so on for all other groups.
"Interestingly," Merriott fails to cover the fact that....70% of drug traffickers and possessors of drugs are White...while 70% of those in prison for drugs are Black and Hispanic.
How can that be?!
Racism in regards to 1) which areas are more likely to be patrolled by cops, 2) lack of adequate legal representation, and 3) White offenders are more likely than any other group to receive reduced sentences, community service, or probation.
Hence, you cannot go by who is in jail or prison when trying to determine "what group of people commit the most crime in America."
Two, white-collar-crime costs America in economic terms 150 times as much as street crime.
Ninety-four percent of drunken driver offenders in America...are White.
Look on the U.S. Dept. of Justice's website.
On that same site you can find that "85% of the crimes committed against women and children are committed...by White men."
Ninety-two percent of the hate crimes in America are committed by...no surprise....Whites.
From the Children's Defense Fund:
Every day in America: for whites
49 White babies die
1,374 White babies are born into poverty
1,019 White babies are born without health insurance
271 White babies are born to women who had late or no prenatal care
99 White babies are born at very low birth weight (less than 3 lbs., 4 oz.)
563 White babies are born at low birth weight (less than 5 lbs., 8 oz.)
939 White babies are born to teen mothers
1,802 White babies are born to mothers who are not high school graduates
2,300 White babies are born to unmarried mothers
3,803 White children are arrested
100 White children are arrested for violent crimes
257 White children are arrested for drug abuse
1,341 White public school students are corporally punished
8,870 White public school students are suspended**
2,133 White high school students drop out
1 young White person under 25 dies from HIV infection
27 White children or youth under 20 die from accidents
5 White children and youth under 20 die from firearms
4 White youth under 20 commits suicide
4 White children and youths under 20 are homicide victims

Kentucky's White-on-White murder rate highest in the nation.
HOMICIDE RATES IN SOME COUNTIES RIVAL BIG CITIES'

By Frank Langfitt Southeastern Kentucky bureau
HYDEN, KY -- People wave when they pass each other along the mountain roads of Leslie County. Cars usually stop in front of the courthouse in Hyden to let people cross the street.
Folks here are among the friendliest and most courteous around. And like many in Eastern Kentucky, they think they act a little more civilized than people in big cities.
They are right - except when it comes to killing each other.
From 1980 to 1989, Leslie County had a per-capita homicide rate higher than New York City, Chicago or Los Angeles.
A review by the Herald-Leader found that Leslie and nine neighboring Appalachian counties in southeastern Kentucky had higher homicide rates than many major U.S. cities.
Wolfe and Perry counties had homicide rates of 24.2 and 21.6 for every 100,000 people -- both higher than Philadelphia, Boston or San Francisco.
Clay, Breathitt and Owsley had rates ranging from 2l.1 to 18.6 for every 100,000 - higher than Seattle or Nashville.
And Harlan, Estlll, Knox and Lee had rates of at least 15 for every 100,000 -- twice the state average and greater than Columbus, Ohio; Phoenix, Ariz.; or San Diego.
Leslie County's homicide rate -- 28 for every 100,000 -- was the highest in Kentucky. It was also more than three and four times that of the state's two most urban counties, Jefferson and Fayette.
The 10 Appalachian counties listed above were among the 14 highest in the state. Higher than even Lexington or Louisville.
In some cases, the rates of Appalachian counties were not much higher than those of U.S. cities. But in others, the difference was substantial.
If people in Perry County had killed each other at the rate of people in San Francisco, 25 fewer would have died between 1980 and 1989, data show.
During that period, 69 people were killed in Perry County. Perry's average population for the decade was 31,992, according to census figures.
(In determining the city and county rates, the newspaper considered all murders and non-negligent manslaughters compiled in crime reports from 1980 through 1989 by the Kentucky State Police and the FBI. Vehicular and other negligent homicides were not included.)
During the decade, the average populations of the 10 Appalachian counties ranged from 5,368 to 39,337, according to census figures. Homicides for each of the 10 counties were distributed evenly throughout the decade, suggesting that the high rates were not due to chance.
"None of this is surprising," said Ronald D. Eller, a professor of history at the University of Kentucky and a leading Appalachian scholar.
Eastern Kentucky may be rural, but many of its problems -- high unemployment, poor schools and, in some narrow hollows, crowded living conditions - are similar to those in urban areas.
The region bas a long tradition of violence fueled by the pressures of its boom-and-bust coal economy, Eller said. Scholars also see links between current levels of violence and the region's turbulent history, including the Civil War and industrialization.
State police and prosecutors think chronic joblessness and high dropout rates have left some people with
little patience and few skills to resolve their differences peacefully.
People in Eastern Kentucky "will be nice to you, and if that doesn't work, they will go to the other extreme," said Capt. Douglas Asher, commander of the state police post in London.
JL: While violent crime has decreased in urban areas, it continues to spiral in eastern Kentucky....fueled by crack cocaine, meth, and other drugs.

Not surprising for me, but indeed shocking for L. Merriott and others of her ilk is the fact...that 7 Kentucky counties (over 98% White) are among the poorest counties in the nation....and one of them is the poorest county in the nation, Magoffin County...over 99.5% White.

Lindsey a very long winded bunch of rhetoric garbage! You try to sound intelligent as if you are really having a conversation with a person at stormfront. In reality you are a bafoon who shows his hypocrisy by skewing facts and numbers as stormfront posters do. One example is comparing a country with prob a population of 1500 people at a per capita ratio. Maybe you should have took obamas advise and had tht extra month in school.

Yep, lets pay them to read just like we pay them to have them on the Welfare so the Crack Cocain dealers can become the beneficiaries. Some people can come up with the dumbist s--t I have ever heard. Lets give them all laptops so the can be sold at the pawn shops and to drug dealers. Why not we even double their food stamps so they can be sold and the children are still hungry. The only way we can fix our childrens education is fix the women and men that are producing them. True Welfare reform is in order. We should stop rewarding unemployed unwed parents with checks and food each and every month. Those that do get food stamps that do not sell them eat better than the average hard working American. Income tax come they get our tax money for tax credits for their children and they have not paid a dime into the system. It is time to make Americans responsible for the choice they make. I can't stand generational Welfare and something needs to be done about it. Put them on the Freeway make them pick up paper or cut grass to eliminate some of the expense on the States. This is CRAZY!

The majority of aids comes from convicts? Rubbish!!! If I didn't have to go to work I could tear apart all of you so called facts.... after work maybe I will (with the hope that bv will post it) Funny how blacks can say they are better than whites at sports but whites cannot say the are better at school. Hypocrisy!
