As the days have gone by since the start of the Bishop Eddie Long scandal, I've become more and more convinced that there needs to be a serious investigation. Something doesn't seem quite right with the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, and the world needs to hear more from the young men who've been speaking out in public.
While I've seen quite a bit of evidence and videos that have gotten my attention, nothing has compelled me more than the interview with Long's latest accuser, Jamal Parris (pictured). Parris, who was chased down by Fox 5 in Atlanta, was reluctant to talk at first about the incident, but once he spoke up, his words were shocking. I'll lay out some of the thoughts he shared with Fox 5 and give you my take after that.
With passion in his voice and looking as though he was about to cry, Parris went out of his way to tell the world what kind of man he believes Long to be. He said that when Long wanted sex from a young man, he found him interesting, but once he was done with him, he would leave him behind:
"This man turned his back on us when he had no more need for us," Parris said. "That's not a father, that's a predator."
Parris really laid into Long in a way that I've hardly seen from someone with a pending lawsuit. I can't imagine that his attorney was happy to hear that he was speaking so openly about the case. Either way, he was incredibly convincing on camera and would be equally convincing in a courtroom.
"We would have to be the craziest kids in the world to want to come out and admit to another man touching on us publicly. To really believe this is about money would be absolutely ludicrous."
Parris said that he loved Long like the father he never had. He seemed to feel betrayed and abandoned by Long, and the anger looked real:
"I cannot get the sound of his voice out of my head," said Parris. "I cannot forget the smell of his cologne. And I cannot forget the way that he made me cry many nights when I drove in his car on the way home, not able to take enough showers to wipe the smell of him off of my body."
For the finale, Parris hit Long's reputation right where it hurts:
"But that man cannot look me in my eye and tell me we did not live this pain. Why you can sit in front of the church and tell them that you categorically deny it. You can't say that to our face. And you know this. You are not a man, you are a monster."
One cannot say with certainty that Long is guilty of any form of sexual abuse, but I won't tell you where I'd bet my money. Long is going to have a hard time persuading the world that all of his accusers are involved in a conspiracy. He won't have trouble, though, persuading the world that his accusers might be disgruntled.
One has to wonder about Parris' statement about Long abandoning men after losing interest in having sex with them. Does this mean that Long's biggest mistake was to stop supporting them financially? If he were still taking care of them economically would this lawsuit be nonexistent?
One of our loyal BlackVoices readers argued that the Long scandal is not about homosexual sex but is instead about pedophilia. The reader made a good point, but it is not certain that Long had sex with any of the men before they'd reached the age of consent. So, if two men are engaged in a sexual relationship and both of them are adults, at what point have we passed the legal definition of coercion?
I don't know the answers to most of the questions I've posed. But I'm sure that time will reveal all secrets. When the real Bishop Eddie Long is presented to the world, he could end up being a man entirely different from the pastor we respect so much. As sad as it is to say this, I can only hope that his accusers are lying.

Dr. Boyce I know you are tired of writing about Eddie Long because I'm tired of replying about him but he has become the gift that just keeps on giving. What Eddie Long has done is the same thing that was done to him, unfortunately he did not get any help. I pray to GOD these young men can get their lives back because I have a teenage son my heart goes out to them. If I lived in Lithonia I would have had my son in Longfellas. What happened to these boys could have happen to "anyone's" child who was in the mentoring group. More parents need to ask their sons over and over again if anything like this happen to them in Longfellas.

After watching the predator address his congregation it left me dumbfounded.
What a pompous, manipulating, full of (it) piece of work.
Those in the parish need to wake up before he asks them to drink the kool-aid.

Great point The Truth. If he is guilty, he is more of an AntiChrist type character like Jim Jones and David Koresh were. People should learn from this (how the church seems to support him after hearing "only" his words and not getting all of the facts. Sadly, if he's proven to be guilty, many will still believe he's innocent.) THE AntiChrist will also do seemingly good works and fool many.

The unfortunate thing is that this seems to be quite common in the black community, what is wrong? this seems to passed on from generation to generation, help and counselling is needed, the bishop probably first came across this or was either raped in prison or something, because if he was delivered he wouldn't go back to this type of lifestyle, those backing the bishop in the church are probably just as quilty the spotlight should also be on them it is already on the church and church's people are woundering what is going on in this church's are they preaching the gospel or what, they always say christians are hyprocites, the crap has already hit the fan God's house needs to be cleaned out and fast!maybe it's time church's in america are no longer segrated and black and white and all colours begin worshipping together at a bible beliving church, accountability is important. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE SICK MEN? ALL OF THIS SEX WITH MEN STUFF. THIS IS JUST SO WRONG SO VERY VERY WRONG.
THE YOUNG MAN SOUNDS VERY COMPELLING. I DON'T KNOW THIS YOUNG MAN BUT HE SOUNDS VERY SINCERE. THIS YOUNG MAN WAS SHOPPING AND WAS NOT AWARE THAT THE NEWS MEDIA WAS FOLLOWING HIM. SO THIS WAS NO PRE PLANNED INTERVIEW. THIS WAS IMPROMPTU AND THE YOUNG MAN SPOKE FROM HIS HEART.
THIS YOUNG MAN AS WELL AS THE OTHERS ARE GOING THROUGH SOME DIFFICULT TIMES RIGHT NOW, HAVING TO EXPOSE THEMSELVES AND THIS TERRIBLE SITUATION TO THE WORLD.
I HOPE THAT THE YOUNG MEN CAN GET HELP SO THEY WON'T IN TURN REPEAT THIS OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOR TO OTHER YOUNG MEN.
THE REALLY SCARY THING ABOUT ALL OF THIS IS THE FACT THAT IF THE ALLEGATIONS ARE TRUE; THAT MEANS MOST LIKELY THAT EDDIE LONG IS OUT THERE MANIPULATING AND MOLESTING 14 YEAR OLDS AS THIS STORY IS BEING TOLD. HE WILL DO THAT TO HIS CURRENT CROP OF 14 YEAR OLDS BECAUSE THEY ARE YOUNG AND THEY DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER. HE WILL SHOWER THEM WITH MONEY AND OTHER MATERIAL THINGS. HE WILL SHOWER THEM WITH FINANCIAL GOODS TO KEEP THEM QUIET AND PERHAPS SHOWER THEIR MOTHERS WITH THINGS ALSO TO KEEP THEM QUIET.
SO SAD AND SO SICK.

In response to RIGHT OR WRONG'S COMMENT:
This is not, as you put it,"quite common" in black communities. Therefore, to answer your question, "What is wrong?" The problem is the mentality you have on this issue. PAY ATTENTION: This is not quite common in the black community. This is a serious matter within society as a whole. You, RIGHT OR WRONG, need to get educated on this issue and not paint black communities with a perversion that relates to all those who have this perversion. Yes, this is sick --- but, it is even more sick when people like you rely on ignorance instead of facts by getting educated on "this matter."

@Doug Bishop Eddie L. Long had the opportunity TWICE Sunday in his 'own' environment New Birth to come clean. It's not what he said Sunday that incriminated him but what he did NOT say "I am innocent I did NOT do those things I am being accused of". He simply followed the advice of his attorney. Now Doug you can play DUMB and STUPID if you want, that's your choice. Now why would you want to compare Eddie L. Long to Jesus?
