I spoke with someone familiar with the case and asked him whether T.I. was going back to prison. He said that although he isn't sure of the rapper's fate, there is an inherent contradiction in his case. While we can almost expect that T.I. will be punished for his latest violation of the law, the same can't be said for other celebs, like Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton. Both of these young women have been arrested time and again for one offense or another. In each case, they are typically given a slap on the wrist.
Artists like T.I. and Lil Wayne have done hard time for their violations of the law. We could try to argue that their crimes are worse than those of Lohan and Hilton (I don't agree with this point), buy you can't disconnect their experiences with the justice system from the disparities between white females and African American males.
According to the Department of Justice, black males are roughly 35 times more likely to go to prison than white females. Additionally, black children are nine times more likely than white children to have a parent in the penitentiary. T.I.'s children have already spent a year without their father. If his hearing doesn't go well, they may not see their father for a very long time.
This is not to say that T.I. didn't play a role in the creation of his problems. I've written publicly that I was incredibly disappointed after this latest incident. He not only disappointed me, but he also let down millions of fans who believed in him, and the children he's vowed to raise. But I wonder if this were Lohan caught with weed and codeine in her car, would there be a possibility of a prison sentence? Both she and Paris Hilton have been arrested for cocaine possession, and Hilton was recently videotaped in the car of a friend who ran over a woman and drove away. Lohan and Hilton have rap sheets that could probably rival those of T.I. and Lil Wayne, yet we typically expect that they are going to "MacGyver" their way out of every situation.
If a black male rapper were doing all the things that Lohan and Hilton were doing, would their trips to the courthouse be cute little celebrity appearances, or situations where they'd be expected to face real consequences? If these artists were sent to rehab or jail, would they be able to skip out of their sentences or miss court dates whenever they wished? What about black males in the 'hood being caught with dope versus college students who get drunk and high every weekend on college campuses? Do we consider all of these cases in the same way?
I won't answer these questions for you, since our perspectives as Americans vary widely based on where we come from and who we represent. But with almost no exception, we can argue that the experiences of black men in the criminal justice system are quite different than that of white females. This is true even if you're a celebrity.

Might go to prison? HE should go to prison and tryin' to compare him to Lindsey Lohan ans Paris Hilton? There is no comprsion and even asking this question is simply foolish:
*T.I. & his criminal record vs Paris & Lindsey:
T.I. was on probation stemming from a 1998 conviction for violating a state controlled substances act and for giving false information.
After being released on probation, he earned a litany of probation violations in several counties around Georgia for offenses ranging from possession of a firearm to possession of marijuana.
In 2006, after appearing in an Atlanta court on (May 10) and having charges that he threatened a man outside a strip club last year dropped for lack of evidence, T.I. was arrested on an outstanding probation violation warrant from Florida. The warrant claimed that T.I. did not complete the required number of community service hours he was sentenced for a 2003 assault of a female sheriff deputy at University Mall in Tampa.
T.I. was detained by several mall Security Guards at the time of the incident. According to WSB-TV Atlanta, the rapper’s attorney said that the problem was nothing more than a "technical matter" between Georgia and Florida. The confusion arose because T.I. was also sentenced to community service in Georgia for driving with a suspended license, for which he did complete 75 hours of community service in his home state. The rapper was released on bail shortly after being arrested, and was expected to surrender to Florida state authorities the following week to resolve the matter.
On November 21, 2008, T.I. testified in the murder trial of a member of his entourage and a close friend, Philant Johnson (1980–2006), who was murdered in a shooting that occurred after a post-concert party at a club. T.I. has dedicated several songs to Johnson, from the single version of "Live in the Sky" to his more recent hit "Dead and Gone" where Johnson's grave can be seen in the video.
On March 27, 2009, U.S. District Judge Charles A. Pannell, Jr. sentenced T.I. to one year and one day in prison and ordered to pay $100,300 for federal weapons charges; T.I. had his sentence reduced from a maximum 10 years and a $250,000 fine with a plea bargain.
On May 26, 2009, T.I. began serving his sentence in Forrest City, Arkansas. Two days prior to being imprisoned, T.I. performed a farewell concert at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
T.I. was released from FCC Forrest City on December 22, 2009 and was moved into a halfway house in Atlanta. T.I. had the Federal Bureau of Prisons ID 59458-019 and was released from CCM Atlanta on March 26, 2010.
Since being released from prison, he is subject to an audit of his finances, drug counseling, DNA testing, and random searches of his property.
On September 1, 2010, T.I. and his wife Tiny were arrested on drug charges in Los Angeles.
*Paris Hilton - DUI, driving violations and drug possession.
*Lindsey Lohan - DUI & parole violation.
What do you think? They all did jail time but hard prison/penateniary time? There is no comparsion here.
Negro has a criminal rap sheet mile long, you know it and you still post this stupid article anyway in order to gat a buzz and slant a racist angle.
You can do way better than that!

Very nice ooozzzz! I don't know where Dr. Boyce gets off with these rediculous articles. Anyone with half a brain can see that you can't compare the crimes if Mr. Clifford Harris with those of Paris Hilton. SMH. Matter of fact I wonder if you are I would be out of jail like T.I. if we had committed all those violations. Probally not.

You know I have stated that I thought that TI was an idiot to get himself caught up like this again. But, you do pose an interesting question. Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan are better known for their various crimes than any real talents they may possess. And yet they never really seem to suffer any real consequences for what they do. But, I feel the same way about Charlie Sheen. That man has a rap sheet that is long and extensive. Yet he never really seems to suffer any real consequences.

CJS have at his azz. Chew his azz up. They can put all three in the same cell.

I agree, black people need to conduct themselves like they are in a system of racism. Don't go out and do bad things, and complain about how you're treated differently than white offenders...don't give them a reason to lock u up in the first place..Eventually if we give them no avenues to practice racism against us, they will turn to more overt ways to oppress us...and people would be a lot less confused on what is going on...That goes the same with the mortgage system, the criminal justice system, and all other systems that actively discriminate against nonwhite people. We need to boycott these systems, and make our own internal systems for dealing with criminal behavior, applying for loans, etc...

I agree with you Dr. Witkins and you are being too nice. TI is stupid and if he goes back to jail then that's on him. Why in the H&ll would you have drugs in your car, doing them, knowing fully well that if you are stoped by the police and they find said drugs that you will go back to jail. You just did time having guns fool and now this. You are big time stupid. I don't feel sorry for your stupid self but I feel sorry for the kids who may have do with out you again for some time. Have you lost your mind! What a waste!

No one is perfect. People get into trouble. There are a lot of bad powerful influences in this world.
Justice should be fair. The "medical" marijuana laws now in affect, yet a significantly higher proportion of blacks are in prison for this drug and other widely used drug possessions than whites, celebrity or not. The Rapper's screw up does not mean he should get a worse sentence than the white celebrities because he is a black person getting in trouble. I am getting tired of the book being thrown at blacks and hispanics in general and relatively nothing done about whites.

Lindsya and Paris have probably slept with fewer partners than TI and they're considered much bigger "ho's" than he is. It's a double standard. There are also double standards in the law and any Black person that thinks they are going to get equal treatment, on the regular, is just plain stupid. This would be more of a story if TI got the same treatment in the South as two White girls got in California. The best way to not have to face our unequal justice system is ti do all you can to stay out of trouble. Peace.
