The shooting of Daniel Covington has led to an uproar in the black communities of Louisville and nearby Lexington. Many residents are angry that the shooter has not been charged despite the fact that many claim he left the scene. They also wonder why Howes chose to pull out a gun to shoot someone in a fist fight.
The attorney for Isaiah Howes says that his client was a victim as well. He argues that the shooting was in self-defense, and that Howes had no choice but to use the gun. He also denies that his client used any racial slurs toward Covington, as some have indicated.
"He didn't choose to have Mr. Covington attack him. He did absolutely nothing but choose to drive his car," said attorney Bart Adams.
Of course the attorney's story is being refuted by Covington's friends, family and supporters. Their argument is that if a black man had shot a white man, there would have been an arrest on the scene. Covington's family has hired a prominent attorney in the area, Steve Pence, to represent them. Pence met with Louisville Police Chief Robert White to discuss the case.
"I refuse to accept the story that's been portrayed," D.J. Piercy, a friend of Covington's said.
"Daniel was a very down-to-earth person. Wouldn't definitely start anything," Marcus Folmar, one of Covington's former teammates, had to say.
Howe has been arrested in the past for crimes involving alcohol, making threats and possessing guns. Some in the community say he is being protected by privilege.
I know the University of Louisville well. Both of my parents graduated from the institution and so did my younger brother. I grew up as a serious and committed fan of Louisville basketball, and I was sorely disappointed when I wasn't able to get a scholarship to attend the university myself. As much as I love Kentucky, I am quite familiar with the existence of white privilege in a state where African Americans have long been considered to be second-class citizens.
When my best friend was shot and killed in the city of Louisville, the media barely took notice. But on the same day, a white woman from the suburbs was killed and every television station, radio station and newspaper went into Nancy Grace mode trying to find the killer of this "loving mother of two." My friend also had a child, but no one cared about his life or his daughter's, since the life of a black man has never been considered as valuable as that of a white one.
I am not one to presume that Howes should be incarcerated for what he's done to the family of Daniel Covington. But I can't help but wonder the following: If a black man with a history of arrests for alcohol and gun violations were to shoot a white man in the middle of the night, would the case be treated the same way? I think you know the answer to that question.
Daniel Covington's family deserves answers. This certainly does not appear to add up. Rev. James Tennyson is asking questions about the death, too: "All of the story is not coming out," he said. "We feel like answers need to come forth [about] why this young man lost his life, why he got out of the car and went to the other vehicle."
One must certainly wonder whether Howes exhausted every available option before deciding to shoot Covington. If there was another man in the car, why didn't he help him fight Covington off? Why didn't Howes just smash the gas pedal and drive away? Did someone really have to die in the middle of a fist fight? In the case of Daniel Covington, there are quite a few questions that need to be answered, and they should be answered now.

This is a story of continuation. I mean that African-Americans 'Blacks', have always been and it seems will always be at the mercy of a 'White' Americanized society.
Everything is created here to benefit the European descent. There is no unity of citizenry which is divided by color and power.
Matters are worsened because of the history of our lives here and the continued abuse we are bound to suffer. Society is made to ignore the facts, the reality of our condition in the 'black' diaspora, yet we are all linked and one can see how we are thought of and treated by looking at the treatment of 'blacks' in other countries for example Cuba, Haiti, South Africa, Nigeria etc.
We will never get respect from the Eurocentric 'whites' and their peers until we have unified our numbers, our wealth, and our way of thinking.
As it is now we are just a side note to a 'White American' anomaly. We live, breathe, eat, and think 'American'(White), but we are not accepted as 'whites' and surely not treated properly. We function and live like white people without the skin or the background and without realizing that it has a negative affect on all of our overall well-being.
The Jewish community and most other communities have a unity of wealth, thinking, and people. It is the reason they can demand and receive respect.
We were separated, our minds distorted using all kinds of obvious tools. Tools that were generally and purposefuly introduced by our ancestor's captors, while our strongest leaders are murdered or warned to be compliant to the ways of this 'white supremacy' society.Any leader who is powerful enough to sway millions is a danger to them.
It is no wonder our young men and women die in the streets by white men and women in different methods of personal, civil, judicial, or military actions.
Because they have so methodically divided us and caused us to be like them, it is no wonder that we do the same things to ourselves that they do to us.
Now we are made to believe that race doesn't matter, but the only ones who swallow those lies are us!
The psychological tools they use are very effective. All of their tools are working effectively and without most of our knowledge!

Yes, I'm glad you've ended with "some of us" because otherwise, I would have been inclined to suggest you speak for your absolute self. If people are so "thick" and do not realize from
"what & where" they have come; then, shame on them! It is your fault for losing your perspective on your own history! Until "we" respect one another, this will continue as usual--period. And, it will never, ever change in a lot of lifetimes too!

You are so right! We have to stop thinking of Caucasians as our friends. We live among them and work among them but, we have to remember to always keep our guard up. Sometimes I think integration has hurt us as a people in some ways.

We have to remember that there are some things that we have control over. Our choices need to be responsible, and it is often paramount that we take the higher ground. Fist fighting (unless deemed mutual combat) is a Battery. We must try our absolute best to remain out of situations which will not bode well if law enforcement ultimately may become involved. And sometimes its unavoidable, but having said that we can control the situations which we allow ourselves to become involved in. It's difficult when life is lost to a killing, or incarceration; however at the end of the day, we must be ever so vigilant, when we're aware that the "Scales of Justice" are not in our favor. Just my opinion.

David Forde, you must realize that this was a shooting, if it were an actual fist fight I don't think you would pull out a gun unless you lost and wanted unforgivable revenge. Our situations find us, we're not looking for it.
I was in Canada with 2 of my friends. We arrived at 3am and went to a restaurant(not a club, and I have to say that because even black people want to say we were up to no good) we thought was open. 4 white boys was sitting in one car and 3 more in another car. All of them were calling us the "n" word as we walked around the corner. The place just closed and we walked back to our friends only to hear an onslaught of the "n" word. I asked why would they say that but I could see the gun in his lap hidden under his shirt. It was clear they were just trying to antagonize us so they could shoot us.
I got the license plate AHT187 but the other two guys took off running because the driver raised his gun at us.
When we called the police, we found out there was 4 shootings that night by the people that fit that description. No one was hurt. Then the police asked if we even wanted to fill out a report.
This stuff finds you when you're just out living your everyday life.

Nothing good happens at 2:30AM. The only reason one should be out of the home at 2:30AM is if someone is working at that time or has an emergency to take care.
