Racism is alive and well in Gibsonton, Florida. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that it is charging the owners of a single-family home in Gibsonton with violating the Fair Housing Act for engaging in discriminatory housing practices. The owners allegedly backed out of renting a house to a mother and her three children because they were black. In addition, the charge states that the owners used racial slurs when referring to and addressing the family.
The investigation found that Robert and Katherine Cairns initially agreed to rent a house they own to the family of four. Two days after the family moved in, however, Robert Cairns refused to accept their rent payment, ordered the children out of the house while their mother was at work, and changed the locks on the house. The children were later found by a relative about a quarter of a mile from the house, under a highway underpass.
When the mother contacted the local police to report the incident and regain access to the house, Mrs. Cairns allegedly said, "I can't believe you ['n-word']s called the police on me. You ['n-word]s make me sick. I just want you ['n-word']s out of my house." The Cairns subsequently rented the house to another tenant.
The Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to, among other things, discriminate because of race or color in the rental of housing, make discriminatory statements with respect to the rental of housing, or coerce, intimidate, threaten, or interfere with others in their exercise or enjoyment of their right to fair housing. If the behavior exhibited by the Cairns was not offensive, there would be no need for this law.
How cruel can a person be to put children out of their home and allow them to be found under a highway? To add insult to injury, the property owner then berated the tenant for reporting her forced eviction to the police and called her all kinds of racial slurs.
While this case seems extreme, it is not out of the ordinary. In the past, civil rights groups ran aggressive campaigns to educate the public and combat this behavior. In fact, some of my favorite public service announcements arose from this education.

Now that the housing market has soured for many, there has been a return to rental properties. Well, the rules still apply. Maybe it's time to circulate these award-winning PSAs again and let folks know that discrimination in the rental market is not allowed and should not be tolerated.

This is illegal on many levels. Not only is it a fair housing violation to refuse to rent to someone due to their race or ethnicity, forced evictions are just plain illegal as well. How can this guy live with himself?!? Hope he's punished to the maximum extent the law allows.

So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:26-28 This is in your Bible.
We all like people who are like us.

This is no doubt telling the whole story but is yet anouther attempt to play the race card and play the false black victim. Were drugs being sold at that house? Was the house being made into anouther eye sore for the community? Was the tenant turning the neighborhood into ,"da hood."? Was loud affensive rap noise heard coming from that house that offended their neighbors? They should tell the whole story and not just the victim wannabe part to get anouther free ride.

The whole story is told. What is it about "they put the children out of the house when the mother was not home" don't you understand? I am sure they will prevail in court and if the judge is just, this mother and her children will be owning that house and every other asset earned and unearned of these malicious people. This is disgusting. You think people are not as smart or clever as you think of yourself? I am offended by your comments.

edujustice2005 aka Benton: @ Judy; What are you trying to say? Did you see any of that mentioned in the damn article? The things you named are more so done by Whites than Black, b/c they be trying to be Black! Some of you White crackers need to go back under that rock you came from under! So I guess you are the racist landlords atty and you are trying to give them an idea of what to lie about. After all, the family was only in the house for TWO DAYS! But, when they finish, that house and the one the landlords sleeps in will belong to the lady and she will have to rent to their @$$, and if you continues, you could be a co-defendant to the action, so, if I were you I would put my mouth on vacation!

If any of these problems existed, there are LEGAL remedies to the situation (inform the police if they are selling drugs, post for eviction if they are otherwise breaking the lease), but you CAN'T JUST KICK PEOPLE OUT AND CHANGE THE LOCKS. It is against every state's Landlord/Tenant act. The landlord is an idiot, most likely a racist one at that.
