It wasn't a terrorist attack, but there was an explosion. The explosion occurred in my e-mail inbox when a slew of associates forwarded me e-mails about NPR firing Juan Williams for his disparaging remarks about the Islamic community. Many of my friends remembered two years ago, when Juan and Bill O'Reilly went through a lot of trouble to have me fired from Syracuse University.
Their ridiculous stunt stretched over several shows, as they worked to paint me as the most racist black man in America. The attack was a personal retaliation by O'Reilly for the fact that I asked the Your Black World Coalition to boycott O'Reilly's corporate sponsors, after we grew tired of their attacks on Michelle and Barack Obama. I stand by every single word I said about both Juan Williams and Bill O'Reilly, so to put it in layman's terms, "Ain't a damn thing changed."
In his "infinite wisdom," Juan let the world know that seeing Muslims on an airplane makes him nervous, implying that he suspects that they might be engaging in a terrorist attack. This led to NPR pulling the trigger that should have been pulled long ago, leaving Juan plenty of free time to fulfill his love affair with Fox. In fact, Fox is the only network that rewards its black commentators for consistently attacking the poor and minorities, with Juan Williams serving as their lead attack dog.
Juan Williams hasn't been a good fit for NPR since he gave up his commitment to serious and dignified journalism. Instead of doing the high-quality work that landed him with NPR in the first place, Juan decided to sign on with the Bill O'Reilly, Fox News' money machine, allowing himself to be used as a hired gun to promote the most unabashed racism in the history of televised news.
Attacking black people wasn't enough to get Juan removed from NPR, but his first major slur against Muslims got the job done. Either way, I wasn't surprised to hear that Williams was fired, and I sincerely hope that a little time on the unemployment line will help him to connect with the experiences of other black people he enjoys insulting.
As for myself, I worked through "The Juan Williams/Bill O'Reilly/Syracuse University Incident of 2008" (there was another in 2007) quite well. I learned who my friends were, and I found out who was truly committed to academic freedom. Strong black scholars and public figures (Julianne Malveaux, Michael Eric Dyson, Cornel West, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson) came to my defense against Syracuse, and I was willing to go down bloody and burning if necessary.
I also learned a lot about media and free speech, concluding that in this world, free speech doesn't really exist. So, while I am sympathetic to my colleague Paul Shephard and his concerns that Williams' firing violates his freedom of speech, the truth is that Williams has spent years working to violate the free speech of others. If you live by the sword, you will die by it. So the death of Juan Williams' job with NPR is nothing less than poetic justice.

So lets be clear, becuase he disagree's with you and the others, he is not entitled to be treated fairly, is that it Doc.
Lets get this right, we got two black people who get a raw deal from the government, Ms. Sherrod and Mr Williams.
Both spoke and only parts of their commentary gets reported. We know Ms. Sherrod, story. Juan goes on to "Defend Muslims" and he warns Bill about judgeing all by the actions of a view. Of course you dont mention that.
Both get termminated by phone, neither gets the chance to defend themselves, and only Sherrod gets support. do I have this right.
Justice and intergirty dictates, not your personal bias against williams. What happened to you doesnt have a damn thing to do with anything. You have no place in this whatsoever!
It shouldnt matter whether a person agrees with you are not, but what is right.
Fire him dont fire him, but He deserved the chance to defend himself.

Well said. I'm no Juan Williams fan however, the good Dr. should have listened to the entire program. Mr. Williams was pointing out to Bill O'Reilly what he said on The View was inappropriate and even went so far as to quote Barbara Walter's admonishment to Bill O'Reilly. But the only thing that was picked up and taken out of context was that small bit and you would think Dr. Boyce would have listened to the entire exchange.

I did see the entire program, and Juan was trying to make excuses for Bill O'Reilly's bigoted performance on "The View." Bill uses Juan like the only condom in a gay bar, he's too dimwitted to see it. I for one, am glad to see Juan go down in flames, and I doubt seriously if anyone black of any stature will step up to the plate and defend him, after viewing some of the disgusting comments Juan makes about minorities, and the President and his wife. He is on Fixed Noise for one reason...to give them some air of legitiamcy through his association with NPR, and to give cover for the resident bigots.

I am not surprised by this article by Watkins. Obviously he has personal bias towards Juan and it shows in this articla. NPR is a liberal leaning production and obviously anyone who strays from their syllabus will not be tolerated. This was a big mistake on the part of NPR. And let me ask this Nina Totenberg said "if there as “retributive justice” in the world Jesse Helms would “get AIDS from a transfusion, or one of his grandchildren will get it.” Funny she wasn't fired from NPR - what is your response to this, Dr. Watkins?

THE SAME HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT...JUAN WILLIAMS BEING AN AFRO-AMERICAN. THE FIRING MIGHT BE A BLESSING IN DISGUISE. MOVE ON AND GOOD LUCK.

@girlking and tanisha
Yes, Watkins is just being petty and vindictive, and he appears small.
The good thing is the outpouring of support for Juan is off the chain, inspite of the silence from his own.
Again, everybody deserves the chance to defend themselves. Whether the name is sherrod or williams

In a radio interview this week, Williams, 56, had the audacity to reveal his true feelings about seeing people dressed in Islamic garb on an airplane. In the wake of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, he admitted that seeing those types of people made him a little uneasy."
First off, I don't think Juan should have been fired.
No doubt if it had been a white guy saying they were ueasy seeing black people on an airline, you'd applaud the white guy's firing, which is ironic because you got into the same situation of free speech questions in your Syracuse firing.
Shephard came to Juan's defense, and the reason you don't is because Juan rightly sided with Syracuse with regards to your firing.

This is one of the few times I agree whole-heartedly with Dr. Watkins...it was time for Williams to go. Before you people start blathering about the First Amendment and free speech, the Supreme Court has already ruled that this only pertains to the government, and entities exercising government-like authority, like schools and the military. Williams got canned after previous warnings that his comments crossed NPR's policies for journalistic integrity. If he hadn't had is nose up Bill O'Reilly's azz, he would have been able to see that Bill was just trying to use him, to take some heat off of himself for his own comments about Muslims. If Juan had used some common sense, and said "we should not paint all Muslims with the same brush," and walked away, he would still be working at NPR. Don't worry about Juan...Fixed News will carry him for a while, because they can exploit him a little more over this. He will really have to come out swinging at President Obama now, if he wants to save his skin.

I think the lesson for him is no matter how educated you become or how much money you make in your cushy job you are a black man and disposable if push comes to shove.

Unemployment Not so Dr. Boyce:
"At the end of his piece, the editors noted in Willaims' bio that he "is now a full-time Fox News contributor," and the LA Times reports the Williams has now signed a three-year $2 million dollar contract with the network.
This whole thing was a publicity stunt set up by Fox to re-introduce their "new" talking head.
