This weekend, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert held a rally on Capitol Hill. The rally focused on the idea of "restoring sanity" in American politics. Tens of thousands of people showed up to see Stewart and Colbert make jokes about politicians and remind us that working together achieves more than we can accomplish by standing apart.
Stewart and Colbert didn't choose political sides, although most polls show that Stewart is strongly supported by liberals and independents.
Colbert and Stewart hit the nail on the head on quite a few issues, like the distrust that conservatives have toward Muslims and Republican obstructionism in light of Obama's presidency. There were also some who criticized Obama himself, stating that he represents politics as usual, rather than the kind of change that Americans were hoping for back in 2008.
Stewart did bring up race during the rally in one interesting way. He said, "As you know, if you have too many white people at a rally, your cause is racist. If you have too many people of color, then you must be asking for something - special rights, like eating at restaurants or piggy back rides."
It seems that holding a march on Washington is the thing to do these days. Glenn Beck held a rally a month ago, and now Jon Stewart is jumping on the bandwagon. The rallies are not without their political ammunition, given that the world is paying close attention.
I find myself a bit disappointed by the fact that we've commercialized the concept of holding marches on Washington. Neither Glenn Beck nor Jon Stewart has a strong horse in the political game, as they are both entertainers and not serious political figures. One can say, on the other hand, that their presence in Washington is symptomatic of a broader shift in how the polarization on cable news channels is playing a stronger and stronger role in our nation's politics.
Another sign that the Stewarts and Becks of the world are gaining influence is the fact that most major political figures on the right have some kind of affiliation with Fox News. On the left, we saw President Obama make an appearance on "The Daily Show" just a few days ago, in his efforts to drum up Democratic momentum in the midterm elections. So, while I might grumble at the idea of the world taking Jon Stewart and Glenn Beck seriously, the world could actually care less about my sentiments.
One final point about the impact that cable news is having on politics is one that runs contrary to the message being shared by Jon Stewart, who argues that politicians on the right and left need to learn to work together for the benefit of the American people.
The problem is that cable news has done its share of work to politically divide the country. If you are liberal, you watch MSNBC. If you are conservative, you watch Fox. So depending on which side of the fence you're on, there's some corporate entity hoping to enhance their own profitability by filling your head with ideas that will rile you up. In a society where government is already designed to be fragmented, stagnant and dysfunctional, we are sending ourselves down a very ugly path.

Yes, it was absolutely worth the time. I was there and I felt a visceral sense of concern and care for our country. It was a unifying and heeling experience. I want to do my part to keep the ball rolling with The Movement to Restore Unity. Please help me. United we stand; divided we fall.

The world is watching............lets not forget that. America is rapidly losing her place in world leadership, not because of anything President Obama has or has not done but because of a wide range of issues going back decades including prevalent racism. How can we as a nation, plead the case for mistreatment of other peoples when we treat our own minorities, especially Black Americans, so poorly.....yes, racism in America really hasnt improved THAT much even in 2010. Although lynchings and such are a rarity now, blacks are still victims of a more subtle and sinister form of racism that manifests itself in the form of less employment opportunites, legal justice, housing, and finance.
White America has gone after this president with an especially frightening vengence that can only be (sadly)race based, blaming him for the deeds of the previous party that occupied the Whitehouse for EIGHT years!!! President Bush even admited on Television that he sent our youngters to war based on faulty intelligence. Had our current president admitted such a thing, he would have been lynched within ten minutes.....IN the Whitehouse. Its a sad commentary on America but....a Black American must preform his or her duties twice as well as any white American in any area of American society to even begin to be accepted by the majority. This is not an example of "playing the race card" its unfortunately, the truth. It seems to be obvious to the rest of the world......the birth defect (slavery)that America was built upon has come back to haunt her.

Yes, the rally was worth it. Obama appears to be on a island alone. Racism had cooled it's hot head for years. With the election of Obama, the hot head of racism has risen once again. The main street media states jobs and the economy were the culprits in this election, rightly so, but if you take a look at Rand Paul, who wants to go back to the days of Jim Crow, the voters in Ohio who elected a person who voted to send their jobs overseas and the elderly who voted for the tea party folk, who want to cut their medicaid and social security, either these folks are naive or just plain ignorant or take another wild guess.

All of those good point you've made were always in view!
They never say it because they were too blindsided by their shattered paradigms the moment a black person became president.
IT'S not the country they want back, it's the comfort zone of their psychotically racist paradigms they wanted back.
(The country was never lost to take back)
They gave this rant while masked behind President Obama’s spending, which they flipped to appear as if he ran up the “Preexisting” deficit.
They were so hell-bent on attacking a black president that they failed to realize President Obama’s spending is what actually SAVED the economy from total chaos *AND* he was able to account for that he spent!
Unlike the previous presidential/administrations who “LOST MILLIONS” that’s yet to be RECOVERED, till this day!
Notice how those hypocritical whites weren’t talking about THAT!
