I saw this week that Rev. Al Sharpton is taking New York Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo to task for seeming to forget that black people also vote in his state. In a very clear set of statements to the New York Daily News, Sharpton noted that Cuomo has included hardly any people of color on his transition team and appears dangerously close to producing a government that looks more like the state of Mississippi than New York.
"They should have given a priority to send an early signal that they are going to have a diverse administration," Sharpton told the Daily News.
"We have not seen the signal we had wanted to see. I haven't seen any signal at all."
Several members of the black, Hispanic and Puerto Rican legislative caucus have stated that they are concerned about the lack of diversity within Cuomo's administration. There were no minorities on the Democratic ticket when Cuomo ran for governor, which was the first warning sign.
"Andrew Cuomo has repeatedly said he will have the most diverse administration in history, and that's what New Yorkers will get," Cuomo spokesman Josh Vlasto told the New York Daily News.
One of the key points being made by Rev. Sharpton is that any diversity within Cuomo's administration should consist of New Yorkers with real input, and not just token minorities. One tactic used regularly within corporate America and politics is to put a black, brown or female face on an agenda that supports the pre-existing power structure. Fox News uses this tactic with Juan Williams, and Republicans have used this approach with Clarence Thomas, Sarah Palin and Michael Steele.
I haven't interacted much with Gov. Cuomo or his camp, but I did experience my own frustration with his administration's lack of concern for racial issues. In Syracuse, I helped plan a rally against a man with a tattered racial history (Joe Price) who planned to run for sheriff in the county in the midst of two minority deaths that occurred in police custody. Rev. Sharpton and the National Action Network partnered with our initiative, and we were able to successfully secure suspensions of officials within the jail and to get them to discuss making changes. We reached out to the Cuomo administration to ask that they denounce the racist candidate as a member of the party (which would have been in line with the county Democratic committee, who'd already done so) and they refused to even acknowledge the issue. It was at that point that I was reminded that Cuomo, like many other Democrats, doesn't seem to care as much about racial justice as he does about getting black and brown voters to go along with his agenda.
For the most part, people of color are typically passengers on the Democratic ship and cheerleaders for the liberal football team. We are often used as political mascots and not taken seriously as partners in our collective destiny. I would challenge Cuomo, as he adds brown faces to his team, to ensure that these are individuals with a pulse on the spirit of the community, as well as empowered to have a relevant voice within the administration. Black and brown voters are tired of being taken for granted.

I have been saying for years, the Democrat’s treat Black folk like their mistress. We are good enough to take to bed, but not good enough to take home to momma. Well, they received the shock of their life at the midterm election. I hope Obama see the hand writing on the wall and adopt Harry Reid tactics. That man did not awesome jobs in Nevada. Reminds me with Jesse “The Body” Venture did up in Minnesota. both are text book material. So if the Democrat’s would to be back in power, they better take lessons from Reid and Venture.

Get a life, haterman and go back to the pig barn that you came out of. Rev. Sharpton has done more to help all people than you will do in your ha lifetime. Moving on, hold those dems feet to the fire since they want our votes so bad but don't want us on their admins. Al is not the leader of the black race as you haters put it, ok. He is a voice of many that won't let you haters try to get away with any thing, ok. You haters are tring so bad to run this country but you all can't and that's all good, hater but please do keep making fools of yourselfs in the meantime, ok!

Cuomo made the error of promising folks diversity. He didnt have to do that, its not like they were not going to vote democrat anyway. He made the promise he should follow thru.
But on the filpside, its not like he has too, again, what the hell are they going to do.
The deal is handouts for votes, and as long as they stick to the deal, democrats will be all right. They dont have to concern themselves until midterm and national elections.
Cuomo, brought this heat on himself, next time to stick to the deal!

Here is the thing that bothers me about this and Al's actions. 1) Brady made some very good points on his post. Mainly Cuomo made statements that initially don't seem to be paning out but he has not even taken office yet. 2)If Al S. is so fired up about how things are SUPPOSED to run, then he should of run for the position himself. Trying to leave out my personal distaste for the Rev. Who the heck is he to tell Cuomo how he should run his office?? If he wants all whites or all blacks or all what ever that is his choice!! He won he gets to decide. If peepz in the city don't like it they can vote him at,simple as that! But Al seems to be butting his nose into things that are not his business. I wonder if he would have any issue if Cuomo had and all black staff?? Because it would be just as unbalanced and one sided right? But Al would not say a word. No one is going to Al's action network and making sure he has enough mix of all races are they?? Just seems like a play for some grand standing and attention for some thing that is not doing anything to help with the Major issues facing this country! I would think his efforts could be focused on some Bigger issues, but to take my own medicine I have no right to tell Al what he should do either. He can do what he wants and he should not care one bit of what I think. As it should be!!!

@jeromequigley
I agree with all you wrote. These two are confusing the plantation population. White liberals dont make promises to his black folk, he just makes sure they stay dumb and dependent.
The local race hustler doesnt bite the hand feeding him, and they damn sure dont make demands. Al's job is to keep negroes docile and on the plantation.
They both get to profit and maintain their positions. Everybody is happy, they get elected and profit, and black folk are just as dependent on both as we ever were.
My advice, to Cuomo is do nothing.
whats the worst that can happen, NOTHING!

back@ Brady..WELL SAID!!! The end of your post was so true and right on that I let out that half laugh half sigh, and purely reactionary! Till peepz realize that it's not a black-white(or what ever combo peepz see) fight we should be focused on. THAT IS JUST WHAT THEY WANT US TO DO!! It is the RICH/POWERFUL VS AVERAGE PEEPZ FIGHT WE SHOULD BE FOCUSING ON!!! You seem to get that with out a doubt Brady. Problem/question is...how do we get the rest of the peepz to see it and act on it??? So easy to see and fix, yet seemingly impossible to inact!! Our sad state of affairs in the USA!!!!
