Western Sahara Rocked by New Violence

Moroccan police and local residents in the Western Sahara seeking independence clashed in tear-gas fueled fighting.

The fighting pits the Morocco government against the Polisario Front, which declared independence in 1976 and represents nomadic Saharawi people.

They have accused the government of stoking the violence to derail ongoing United Nations talks designed to map the future of the unstable Western Sahara region.

A camp that housed 20,000 Saharawi was destroyed by government troops.

Like most of the areas in Africa that are under violent dispute, the tracts being fought over are rich in minerals and foodstuffs.

It's hard to figure out why both sides cannot agree to share the natural wealth of the region. But that goes for all of the disputed areas throughout Africa. Don't they realize that half a pie is better than none at all?

Perhaps the United Nations-sponsored talks will help them see the light.
