A 22-year-old woman faces charges of child abuse and driving without a license after her toddler niece fell out of her moving vehicle. The woman claimed that she was totally unaware of the incident.
Patricia Denard (pictured) had four children between the ages of 10 months and 5 years old in her SUV. According to police reports, the mom, who has an inordinately long history of driving violations and several bench warrants, only had the 10-month-old in a child-restraining seat. Two of the children in the SUV belonged to Denard; the others were a niece and nephew.
Reportedly, the Inkster, Mich., resident's 14-month-old niece was either pushed out of the vehicle by her 3-year-old brother or flew out as the SUV rounded a corner.
A passerby just happened to witness what had occurred, immediately went to the aid of the injured toddler and then called 911.
A total of 15 minutes passed, and Denard returned to the corner where the child had fallen out. Police were already on the scene, waiting to speak with the serial-driving violator. Denard was taken in for questioning.
The toddler, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The child's grandmother, Paula Denard, told ABC-7 Action News, "I was really devastated at the time when I heard what had happened, because I thought my granddaughter was seriously injured. But I found out that she was fine and just had a bump on her head."
Family members suspect that the child's brother pushed her out of the SUV.
Although Denard is classified as a habitual driving offender, the young woman has never officially been issued a driver's license.
Bond for Denard was set at $10,000, and she is currently behind bars. Child Protective Services was summoned to investigate the case because none of the children, except for the 10-month-old, were in child restraints. Denard's children could be taken away, and she could be looking at a one-year prison term if convicted.

So sad, IF your vehicle has a CHILD LOCKING mechanism, use it! I feel so bad for that baby and the aunt! Things happen so quick now-a-days. Buckle your babies up and use the child lock, if you have one. Mine is on at all times! Adults who sit in the back of my SUV can't get out, unless I let them.
what i don't get is why she is being charged w/child abuse? is it because they weren't in child booster seats?
now i want to know why they aren't locking up the parents of these children for leaving them in her care and having her chauffeur them around knowing full and damn well she doesn't have a license.. they should've made sure she had adequate space and booster seats for their children.. they also probably knew about the other summonses she had 2..
it sounds like she was doing a good gesture but w/out a license she should've passed on this one..
it's unfortunate what happened to the little girl but it's not like she pushed her out the car..

Obviously an unfit mother with no regard for the law or basic safety of her kids. The kids should go directly into the custody of their father.
