Haitians Turning on U.N. Peacekeepers Over Cholera Spread

Comments (2)

There are several sad scenarios one could see coming, since January's massive earthquake rocked Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, killing 250,000 people.

Experience with previous natural disasters might have prepared us all for:

1) The massive human suffering

2) The lack of sanitary conditions

3) An occasional breakdown of law and order

4) Food and water shortages

5) Unsafe refugee camps

6) The spread of disease

7) The empty promises of donor nations that promise aid but are slow to write checks

Make no mistake we have seen all that and more come to fruition in Haiti's earthquake aftermath.

But I never would have guessed I would see reports out of Haiti that people are turning against the United Nations (UN) and rioting across the island, because they believe some peacekeepers are responsible for an outbreak of cholera that has killed hundreds.

The anti-UN fighting has killed at least one person, but there are reports of other deaths in the gun play that has wounded more than a dozen people.

As if Haiti doesn't have enough to worry about.

Some Haitians suspect that peacekeepers from Nepal are the source of the cholera outbreak. They point to a Nepalese base camp on the Artibonite River system, where the outbreak was centered. The disease had never hit Haiti before and there was a recent outbreak in Nepal, when the soldiers transferred to their UN posts in Haiti.

The Haitian people might be right in suspecting the Nepalese forces in the outbreak, but starting gun battles in the streets with them is a sad and twisted response. At this point, every bit of energy and every bit of available resource needs to be pointed toward containing the outbreak.

The time for placing blame can come later.

Meanwhile, while the UN denies the Nepalese camp was the source of the cholera; it might be helpful to conduct a real investigation of where the disease came from.

As well-intentioned as they may be, it is inexcusable that UN peacekeepers make a bad situation worse on their tours of duty.
