Minority Leaders Right to Question Cathie Black as NY Schools Chief

I know little about Cathleen "Cathie" Black (pictured above left) other than she used to publish New York Magazine and USA Today and that she is a very questionable choice to lead the nation's largest school district.

New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (pictured above right) picked Black for the job earlier this month and now minority lawmakers in the city are raising questions about her selection. They are right to be concerned.

I doubt they know any more about Black than I do and that is the problem.

Just because Black has climbed to the top of the publishing world, does that make her the best choice to run New York's schools? Perhaps in Bloomberg's world where business acumen can mask all other ills, that decision makes sense.

But it's nonsense to me.

I understand that Black could surround herself with education experts to help her through the day. But shouldn't the schools chancellor have a solid understanding of education and the politics surrounding the city schools that serve more than 1.1 million students?

You can't tell me that there aren't more accomplished and deserving candidates for the school chancellor job if Bloomberg would simply cast his gaze beyond the exclusive club of rich, influential New York City bigwigs he leads.

It's unfortunate the discussion around Black is taking a racial turn but its seems that only minority legislators, for the most part, like New York City Council member Robert Jackson and Assemblyman Karim Camara of Brooklyn are stepping up to the plate to question this selection.

Bloomberg needs to pull Black's name from nomination and conduct the type of thorough job search the head of New York City Public Schools deserves.

I just hope that if she doesn't get the schools gig, Ms. Black doesn't land at AOL. Guess who might be looking for a blogging job if that happens?
