One of the things that got my attention was a very telling statistic about our president. After being in office for 22 months, the president has not granted or denied a single pardon. The only other president in recent history to have granted such a small number of pardons this deep into his presidency was Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush.
The Office of the Pardon Attorney receives applications for presidential pardons. On their website, they reported that the president has neither granted nor denied any pardon requests that have been sent to him. Since Obama was elected, there have been 494 requests for pardons. This brings the total number of pending requests up to 1,140. The president formally denied 71 of those requests last month, but the denials have not yet been released onto the website.
"It may be that your advisers have cautioned that extending clemency to humans is politically risky, and discouraged you from acting favorably on any of the hundreds of pending applications that await your consideration," said Pardon Attorney Margaret Colgate Love in an open letter. "But this advice is at best shortsighted."
Love goes on to argue that productive citizens are still hindered from moving on with their lives because of old criminal records and the subsequent disenfranchisement experienced by those who've been convicted of a crime. I would argue that it is especially ironic that our first black president has not used his power to pardon deserving citizens given the devastating impact that the criminal justice system has on the African American community. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there are currently 846,000 black men in prison. This constitutes 40 percent of the prison population. Ironically, we are only 13 percent of the general population, leaving millions of children to be raised without a father. Many of these convictions are connected to draconian laws against drug possession, the three strikes law in California and the well-documented sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine.
Not only should President Obama grant more presidential pardons, the pardon system should be expanded to take into account non-violent citizens who've been convicted under antiquated and counter-productive legislation. To date, quite a few pardons are granted to those with connections and wealth. But perhaps a symptom of real "hope and change" could be the sharing of such privilege with the masses, thus making a presidential statement about the state of our criminal justice system. We must remember that the 13th Amendment, which abolishes slavery, actually states that slavery is not abolished if you've been convicted of a crime. So, the use of cheap prison labor to make products for corporations, with the bulk of this labor being black, tells us quite clearly that our prison system is nothing more than modern day slavery. If Obama truly wants to preside in the memory of his hero, Abraham Lincoln, perhaps he can have the courage to be the first president in history to truly abolish slavery in America.
President Obama is a black man, a liberal and an attorney who has spent a significant amount of time in Chicago. If anyone understands the challenges of black men in prison, it should be him. In light of the fact that the greatest evidence of Americanized apartheid occurs in the prison, educational and economic systems in America, most of us should fully expect President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder to directly confront these systems that work to destroy the African American community. The question becomes whether or not Obama's loyalty to the Democratic Party, himself or his bid for re-election supersedes his desire to help other black men like himself. President Obama may only have two more years to be the most powerful man in the world. I truly hope he doesn't allow politics as usual to cause him to miss his opportunity to make black history in ways that are more than symbolic.

Quote from article: "Obama Pardons Turkeys, but Not People: What Does That Mean?"
What does that mean? It means nothing because pardonong turkeys during Thanksgiving is an annual Presidential tradition that all Presidents do and those remaining Presidential pardons for prisioners that are sitting on his desk in the Oval Office will be reviewed and decided on nearing the end of his term just like all other Presidents in the past so in this case, he is not breaking any traditions or doing anything that should be done simply because he is the President and Black.
And the question you asked, "Not only should President Obama grant more presidential pardons, the pardon system should be expanded to take into account non-violent citizens who've been convicted under antiquated and counter-productive legislation."
Ain't gonna happen.
My question to you is, did you ask the exact same question of President George W. Bush or President Clinton? Why are you only asking President Obama? Is it because he's Black? You say that "President Obama is a black man, a liberal and an attorney who has spent a significant amount of time in Chicago. If anyone understands the challenges of black men in prison, it should be him."
President Obama is a lawyer, a former corporate lawyer and former consitiutional law professor at an Ivy League school teaching law students and not a "boots on the ground" trail lawyer working directly with law enforcement or in private practice in a courtroom spending his law career defending innocent victims or locking up the bad guys and because of his career path as a lawyer outside of the criminal justice system, he may not have that insight, compassion and understanding of what challenges Black men have in prison since he has never defended or proscuted anyone in a criminal court room, either free (pro bono) or hourly fees.
So in this case, you can't assume that he shoule be any different; has an inkling, insight or the wanting to based on his past experience to pardon prisioners who are looking to be pardoned. He is simply looking strictly at the case and the laws that place them in prison and not have any emotion attatched to it so there probably won't be any record number of pardons for prisioners (no matter the race) from President Obama simply because his past experience outside the courtroom, the details of their cases and the political considerations since he is only 2 years in his Presidency.
At the end of his 4 year term and based on his precentages to win or not win a second term, he will pardon some and if re-elected for another 4 years, he will pardon some more at the end of 8 years but don't expect him to pardon the entire Black prison population, both violent and non-violent.
So out of the 1,140 eligible and the 71 denied, don't look for a major upswing but a low number of pardons from President Obama and Black folk should not expect him to pardon your sons or daughters at a record number and pace at the end of his Prsidential term.
And if he happens to pardons more White men than Black men, don't trip.

ooozzzzz, My sentiments exactly!!! I concur with your assessment. Boyce, once again you have written an article with racial overtones that tries to malign President Obama. You, and the other pseudo Black scholars (Dyson, West, & Smiley(?)) are always trying to undermine his Presidency, but I can appreciate that he is fortified in his spirit, mind, and soul- - enough to ignore the trash that is spoken of him. It's one thing to be constructive in feedback, it's another thing to always criticize whatever he does or does not do that is not in alignment with your posse's finite thinking or perspectives. President Obama is Black, but is the President of the United States, not Black folks. Get off his a_ _. He shouldn't pardon, june-bug, pooky, black ' n' nem, because they are African Americans. Cut the crap!!! If you are so concerned about the fate of black males, why don't you and your intellectual posse get off you a_ _ es and off your computers and champion credible, productive, result-based initiatives. No, not another Million Man March either, but something constructive that is preventive rather than crisis oriented. Address the drug selling, black on black crime, gang violence, high school drop out, the lack of financial literacy & wealth management teachings, as well as the need for a stronger commitment to learning general studies ( reading, writing, math & science) - - you know, education. This will help keep them out jail and not in need of a pardon. These efforts will prove to be more fruitful than you dogging Obama all the time. Why should he be expected to give hand outs just because he is black? In your classroom, do you give superior grades to students who are black? I hope not. You do it based on merit and hard work, and scholastic aptitude. I hope. That's your job. So let President Obama do his job. You're really looking like a hater. Trust, you are not as popular as you think in many circles. Don't believe your own hype.
Yes, I am Black and proud of it. I believe in working hard and being diligent. There are no free rides. That's the problem with many or our black male youth. FREE RIDES are being taught. Let's empower them to rise up and take control over their destiny- - and we won't see them killing each other (i.e., the senseless deaths of teens that we are witnessing in Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit and any urban cities across this nation) - - ultimately needing a pardon from the President.
Do you get Boyce? You wake Up! Stop stirring up s _ _ _. To me, your journalistic privilege undermines black America. Crab in the bucket mentality.

I think this president is feeling himself to dame much! like Charlie Rangel said on the house floor, when he said "Charlie they all love you?" then he reflected and thought they love themselves more, charlie never spoke a truer word. This president and and those elected into government were sent to DC to serve the country and the people for who they were elected to serve, just get on with the job and stop looking for self pity! if you want self pity that is why you have a wife!lean on her!

Kim, that's what I am talking about. Exactly!! Boyce sounds so bitter. When you think of W.E.B. Dubois, Booker T. Washington, Paul Roberson, Willie Mays, Frederick Douglass, Ralph Bunche, Charles Hamilton Houston, Thurgood Marshall, Dr. Ben Carson, Medgar Evers, and the list goes on and on of many great black men who expected no hand outs. They made it HAPPEN! They took charge and didn't expect someone was going to give them an opportunity to do anything. They championed causes that worked to dismantle the Black Codes & Jim Crow laws, and end segregation, etc., They didn't wait! They moved in spite of the insurmountable obstacles (lynchings, KKK, and lack of progress during and post the Reconstruction era). They were Mavericks in every sense of the word. They had less resources than what's available now (no computer, internet, social networking, access to education, etc.,) to black males, but they accomplished sooooo much more. I wish Boyce would stop perpetuating the facade of black men needing President Obama to help them achieve their destiny. Hell, Obama being elected is symbolic that black men can create strategies to empower & uplift themselves. You won't tell me they can run drug operations, organize gangs through geographical / territorial planning & zoning, and orchestrate murders of fellow black males, along with importing guns and high-powered riles into black communities, but they can't think of how to navigate the terrain of wealth building, and amass real estate assets for mega dollar ventures, etc., - - I won't believe it. Black men are smart. They need to channel their energy and not buy-in to the false philosophy espoused by Boyce & his posse, which states they must wait on the government (Obama) to give them a chance.
