The study also found that more than 51 percent of the 511 women surveyed had been victims of violence from men. Also, 78 percent of men admitted to committing a violent act against a woman. One-fourth of the women in the survey said that they'd been raped, but only about 4 percent of these rapes are reported to police.
These findings are similar to a 2008 study that found that 28 percent of the men in Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces had committed rape against a woman or girl. One-third of the men said they did not feel guilty for what they'd done. Two-thirds of the men claimed to have committed rape out of a sense of entitlement, and others raped out of boredom or a desire to punish women who'd rejected them.
The study's author, Rachel Jewkes, said that apartheid may have played a role in creating a culture in which violence against women has been trivialized.
"Apartheid has contributed to culture of impunity surrounding rape in South Africa," said Jewkes, who added that men who experienced trauma or were abused were more likely to commit rape than other men.
Jewke's remarks about the impact of apartheid on violent behavior obviously makes me think about the United States of America. Americanized apartheid, in which a black underclass was created via oppressive forces, also fostered a culture in which women are consistently disrespected in media, treated as sex objects and forced to endure unreported acts of violence.
In fact, an older black man once laid it out to me in simple terms, explaining why his father had 20 children with more than 12 different women. He said, "When you would go out and get treated like sh*t all day, the only power that a man had was his d*ck." While the man's actions were not based on violence, this form of sexual decision making is likely linked to counterproductive responses to an oppressive environment. It is up to all of us to take the time to educate our sons and daughters about violence against women and sexual responsibility. South Africa is not the only place where people hurt one another.
One interesting case in which the life of a young black woman was disrespected was the trial against R&B singer R. Kelly. Despite the fact that quite a few people believed that Kelly was the man on tape having sex with a young girl, much of the black community continued to buy his albums without regard or concern for the young woman he may have raped. I was incredibly disappointed in many of my female friends, who seemed to feel that the little girl was asking for it, or that the quality of Kelly's voice mattered more than the fact that he might be hurting young girls. In fact, it actually sickened me.
We can all learn something from this study. As far as South Africa goes, I sincerely hope there are significant adjustments to the sexual culture of a nation where the government has denied the impact of HIV for a long time. There are nearly 6 million people in South Africa living with HIV or AIDS (more than any other country in the world), and more than 300,000 South Africans are believed to have died of AIDS-related illnesses in the last year alone. When the promotion of sexual ignorance is combined with unaddressed violence against women, you have a recipe for national disaster. The government had better deal with this issue soon.

I am a social/human scientist and aware of the historical social, economic and psychological conditions that have fostered this rampant condition. At the same time, rape has been a factor of control-domination throughout history. The current predicament has been exacerbated by horrendous conditions, but there is no excuse for refusal, denial and inability to confront this disrespect with as much vigor as any enemy that crosses into ones "homeland." Ammunition of a different type, of course. No one cares--until it affects their own personal space. I propose a campaign focused on "Would you do this to your MOTHER? Perhaps a sensitivity can be found.

I hate that they are using apartheid as an excuse. in rich countries with people who had no old history of violence, there are serial rapists too.
the main reason is simply related to the fact that the justice system doesn't work for reasons related to politics. imagine living in a society where people are confident enough to kill, rape and commit any sort of crime, because the the justice system is a big failure.
without justice in a country, there is no civilization.
rather than going for the easiest excuse, so-called researchers should stop trying to validate themselves or their grievance about slavery and colonization through rationalization of issues that are much more easier to identify or just shut up and pick a topic they have better knowledge of.
always bringing up slavery and colonization as an excuse is like admitting that some people will never ever prosper because their whole life is conditioned by their past.

Apartheid is not and excuse. It is the reason. No one cares about the Jews validating their pain with the few years the holocaust lasted. They simply floated over to America where they could be assured that they would be treated better than black people.
The "easiest excuse" is one that those who have benefitted from this, that is those who have skewed justice system to benefit themselves, refuse to address.
The justice system is a failure because it has been skewed so that the crimes of slavery and colonization will never be addressed. So like many lessons in life, things like this will continue to be reported until the wicked come face to face with their crimes. The justice system is not a failure because of politics. It is a failure because of racism.
Jews will not forget about the holocaust which lasted a few years. It is not possible to forget about an evil regime which lasted for centuries with Africans and blacks as it victims.

eeduj1001, how ignorant ARE you? The Jews were slaves when Blacks were running through the bush with spears THOUSANDS of years before White Men even knew Africa was there. The Jews have suffered persecution longer than there was written history. You have to be a moron to think it was just WW2.
Jews, unlike most Blacks on BV, have moved on, banded together to thrive and prosper. They are now some of the best Doctors, Scientist and Business Executives. They have overcome the disadvantages of being Jewish and the prejudices that they have faced. Asians (India, Japan, China)look different, some are dark skinned, and they seem to thrive. The biggest difference that I can see in common with the Jewish, Asians and most Anglo people is the value they put on education.
If you dress and sound like a Gangster you will not get the same opportunities of anyone else. There is a level of conformation that is required to get ahead, to assimilate into the mainstream. If you want to be SO different, it will come with a cost. I personally would never hire anyone, black, white, Hispanic or ANYONE that applied for a job with that image. They may be great people but my customers would not understand.
Time to leave the past out of your future, remember it but don't let it ruin the future of you or your kids. Take the chip off your shoulder and get on with life.

For purposes of clarity, and with as much civility as I can summon, the true descendants of Abraham are not from Central/Eastern Europe. Wrong region of the world. The Khazar Empire, a major but almost forgotten power in Eastern Europe converted to Judaism during the dark ages forming the cradle of Western Jewry. And please don't cry anti-semitism as that would be a "misapprehension shared by both the killers and the victims" as written by Arthur Koestler in his book "The Thirteenth Tribe". Please find it, read it. It reveals much and renders your comparison of Africans and Jew(ish) people a major contradiction.
Resiliency always plays an important part in anyone's life and growth. As for getting over it, I'll get over racism when racism is dead.
As to the initial topic of the anti-social behavior
of S. African men admitting to rape, unfortunatly this anti-social act is perpetrated all over the world. The causes stem more from an inability to treat a human being like a human being. Too many view this as a weakness. I hope you're not one of those. If you are, then I pity poor you for not knowing this, not wanting to know this, not wanting others to know this.
