This week after being sent to jail for allegedly murdering his mother with a samurai sword, 'Ugly Betty' actor Michael Brea told the New York Daily News that he was "doing the work of God" when he repeatedly chopped at his mother's body. He says that he didn't kill his mom, but instead "killed the demon inside her."
"I was slashing my mom, and I heard the police knocking on the door yelling, 'Michael, open up, Michael, open up,' but I knew they wouldn't open the door and stop me because the spirits were protecting me. ... I just kept cutting her. No one could stop me. I was doing the work of God," he said.Brea claims that voices inside his head were a sign of what he needed to do.
"I felt like Neo from 'The Matrix.' I began hearing voices and feeling powerful. ... They were asking about the difference between mom and mother. It was a sign."
There isn't much to say about the case. Brea is the son of Marcel and Yanick Brea and is of Haitian descent. He was born in New York city and says he got into acting to share the history of the United States and Haiti through film. He opened a Subway restaurant in Brooklyn because he says he wanted to give healthy food alternatives to urban communities. He also says that his mother taught him to do charity in the name of God.
The sadness of the Brea situation is that if he did commit this crime, it is likely due to mental illness. He's not the first person to murder someone after hearing voices that he thought came from God. Melissa Huckaby was a 28-year-old mother convicted of the murder and rape of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu. Cantu's body was found in a suitcase in a lake in California. When asked about Huckaby, her family described her as a kind and loving mother with a strong religious background. Huckaby, the former Sunday school teacher, said she could not understand why she killed Melissa.
Last year, Otty Sanchez was accused of eating her month-old son's brain and then cutting her own throat. She said that the devil told her to kill her baby. Her case, Huckaby's and quite a few others lead us to wonder what kind of punishment is appropriate when it seems clear that the defendant was not in his or her right mind.
Clearly, someone deemed to be a threat to society should be kept away from others. Brea's reference to the film 'The Matrix' combined with the fact that he is an actor, makes me wonder how film may play a role in how mentally ill people see the world. Brea's decision to "kill the demon inside his mother" reminds me of the recently released film 'Paranormal Activity,' in which a demon was inside a woman forcing her to kill her family members. I'm sure Brea's attorneys are already considering this connection, since it is quite plausible that a mentally ill actor would be unduly influenced by what he sees on the big screen.
One has to be concerned about the fact that one faulty switch in our brain circuitry can make be the difference between a life of freedom and spending the rest of your life in prison. Perhaps the appropriate phrase in this situation for all of us might be, "There but for the grace of God go I." Brea appeared to be a happy and productive citizen as of last week. Now he is a daunting threat to society.

This is so awful. There are so many people walking around this earth that seem to be normal until they do something unthinkable like this.

Mental illness still has such a stigma attached that, although there are treatment options available, the signs are ignored. It would be tragic to find that his family was aware that something was wrong and did nothing. There is also the possibilty that he is simply creating a defense. I don't know which is the case so I will just pray, for us all.

I don't think he's creating a defense because the neighbors said they heard him chanting a bunch of religious quotes as he was chasing his mother around the house and while he was chopping her up.
This is really sad. He may not of had a history of mental illness. Sometimes, people just snap for whatever reason. I'm sure his attorneys will have a toxicology test done on him to see if perhaps he got a hold of something bad.

Well, it seems that all have missed the point. Of course the true God of the universe would not work with anyone one like this.. Only his enemy Satan the Devil and his demons would communicate in this fashion. He is as real as God himself and many refuse to realize this. The God of love condemns all forms of spiritistic activity and warns us to stay away from all forms of religions that subscribe to chanting or anything like that. FreeMasons are known for this and Mr. Brea was a part of this organization. That is what happens when anyone plays around with Satan and his demons.

I definitely see where you are coming from regarding FreeMasons. My god brother, got involved with the FreeMasons some years ago. All of a sudden, he's hearing voices, saying that people were following him and trying to kill him. He kept saying that they wouldn't let him leave. He has now been diagnosed as a schizophrenic.

Amen! The Masons, Eastern Star and even fraternities and sorrorities are secret societies and adhere to and abide by demonic principles embedded in their creeds. Anything good can be shared with everyone for the good of all mankind. These select groups and their chants, whistles and signs are simply higher order gangs. I listen to colleagues and friends who are members of their college greek organziations talk about the benefits of knowing this one or that one and intentionally excluding the rest of us who are not part of those organizations as though we were cerebrally inferior. Folks, heaven is the prize and there is only one central figure who can get you there.........He is Christ Jesus.

@treese I was just curious as to where your line of reasoning comes from because you sound like you've studied with Witnesses. Just asking...

This is truly sad. Especially when anyone can be led to believe God would tell them to murder someone. After all, if God wanted them dead, they'd certainly be dead.As for anyone doing anything because they feel the devil told them to, that is equally as sad. That being said, I do believe that just as there is a Heaven, there is a Hell, and just as there is God, there is a devil. While I also believe the angels of the Lord are tasked with protecting us, the demons and angels of Satan are tasked with stealing, killing, and destroying us as the Word of God teaches. Our culture, our society is being slowly inundated with more and more seemingly harmless supernatural influences, from the deceptively palatable Harry Potter series, to the sexy Twilight series. All ages are being slowly, subtely drawn in much like the lobster or frog who will try to escape when being placed in a pot of boiling water. But place them in a pot of room temperature water, then turn on the fire, and they will just relax until the temperature is gradually increase to boiling and they are thoroughly cooked. As someone once said, the devil's greatest trick is convincing the world that he doesn't exist.

Could not agree more. It is a seduction. That is why I never allowed my children to see anything about this Harry Potter, and now that they are older they do not even want to see this Twilight thing. No paranoia here, just good old fashioned Christian sense. Be careful what you allow in your life.
