After months of fighting, posturing and making threats, the people on Capitol Hill have finally figured out what they are going to do about the Bush tax cuts. Millions of Americans are jobless, but most can agree that the people in Washington are the ones who deserve their jobs the least.
President Barack Obama, in a very intelligent and politically savvy move, compromised with the Republicans, who've fought like crazy to have the Bush tax cuts extended for the wealthiest two percent of our population.
Obama has argued, quite reasonably, that with the economy struggling the way that it is, it makes no sense to keep giving tax breaks to those who need it the least. Even billionaires like Warren Buffett and Bill Gates have expressed their agreement with this sentiment, but the Republican Party, determined to brand itself as the party of the rich, has laid it all on the line to make sure the wealthiest Americans are taken care of.
When speaking about the Bush tax cuts this weekend with Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton, my consistent opinion was that President Obama had no choice but to give the Republicans what they want.
The president was faced with the ethically bankrupt decision of the Republicans to allow unemployment insurance to expire for millions of jobless Americans, right near the holiday season. I explained that if a man is holding your child hostage and wants you to pay him $5,000 to save your baby, you should give the man what he wants. He will pay the price later for his evil deed.
One would expect that the Republicans will surely pay a price for taking such a bold and public stand for the rich. They took over Congress on the backs of a populist push, consisting of Tea Partiers and Americans who call themselves patriots.
The problem is that there is almost nothing patriotic about allowing the wealth gap to grow to the point that America becomes an aristocracy.
There is no justification for giving tax cuts to the rich, since they are not the ones who are creating jobs (less than two percent of all tax returns for small businesses are filed by those earning over $250,000 per year) and the rest of us can't afford to make them richer than they already are.
Another victory for President Obama in this compromise is that he has allowed Americans to see that the Republicans have little desire to control the deficit. By refusing an opportunity to save money by taking a gift back from those who don't even need it, they are effectively saying that they only want to save money by undermining the essential needs of America's poor.
Tea Partiers who complain about the growing deficit must realize that if they are not in the wealthiest 2 percent of the country, they are being bamboozled by those with big money who are controlling their minds to get political power for themselves.
Here are a few quotes from President Obama's statement about the tax cuts. Although I've sometimes critiqued Obama in the past, I must agree with him whole heartedly on this particular issue. There is no excuse for Republican behavior on this one, and the party is likely to pay publicly for this debacle:
"Republicans believe that we should also make permanent the tax cuts for the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans. I completely disagree with this. A permanent extension of these tax cuts would cost us $700 billion at a time when we need to focus on bringing down our deficit. "
Obama also went on to say the following:
*...Republicans will block a permanent tax cut for the middle class unless they also get a permanent tax cut for the wealthiest Americans, regardless of the cost. We saw that in two different votes that were taken this weekend. And without a willingness to give on both sides, there's no reason to believe this stalemate won't continue well into next year. This would be a chilling prospect for the American people, whose taxes are currently scheduled to go up on January 1st. "
I fully expect that as time goes on, Americans will take note that the Republican Party's first item of business after their victory in the midterm elections was to fight for tax cuts for the rich.
There is almost no logical reason for them to hold the other 98 percent of Americans hostage over the wealthiest 2 percent. This leads to questions regarding how they obtained their power, and whether the vast Tea Party movement that swept the nation was actually funded by wealthy individuals who are telling them what to think.
Obama made the right decision to compromise, and sometimes having values can be a liability when dealing with those who have no compassion. This was a long-term moral and political victory for President Obama, and I say, Good job.

Thank you President Obama for looking at the big picture. It's unfortunate that the GOP held hostage, the livelihood of millions of people to get what they wanted.
Although this is a lose/lose situation for you, you have thrown a life line to millions of people who don't have millions of dollars to sustain them through this recession.

As someone posted "I explained that if a man is holding your child hostage and wants you to pay him $5,000 to save your baby, you should give the man what he wants". "He will pay the price later for his evil deed". First of all, you give into terrorist they undoubtedly will return for more especially in 2012. but lets not go there now. President Obama and I support him explicitly but he's had time to present this fact of not compromising and it's possible affects from the party of "No"! If he had pushed this fact, the American people, especially those unemployed would have raised so much hell the Republicans would have had to back off!! The nation would have understood and backed him 100%. Nancy Pelosi has "balls" she wouldn't have given them one inch!!
President Obama has been "Pimp Slapped" in front of the entire nation/world and he'll not get over it when it's time for reelection. The Republicans will hit him with a megaton assault. I'm aware of Boyce's stand when a request for help is asked of him and same goes for Rev. Al or Jesse....All smoke and mirrors all talk and spittle! But yet he has the nerve to beg for an excuse,
Boyce you smell, most assured an exchange of Depends!!

I agree with your analysis Dr. Watkins, but I also believe the victory was bitter sweet. The republicans have been campaigning since 2009. Their goal? The 2010 midterm elections. And they got the victory. The tea party movement has often been accused of voting against their best interests. To borrow from your analogy about the ransom for the baby, I would say that they would gladly throw a few of their own under the bus (in this case being the use of serious manipulation of facts) to reach a greater goal. And what is that goal: Old Mitch said it best "MAKE THIS GUY A ONE TERM PRESIDENT." MY TRANSLATION "GET THIS BLACK MAN AND HIS FAMILY OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE". Now people may agree or disagree with this assessment, but I believe with all that is in me that this has been the goal of these republicans, and the sentiment of many white people in this country. I feel Pres. Obama was pushed into a well calculated corner to have to compromise to get people the benefits they still desparately need. This is not to say, like Dr. Watkins that I have agreed with all the President has done so far. Frankly, I think one of the biggest mistakes he has made is continually running from the issue of race in America. The argument could be made that we never asked any other President to do it with such passion, but then he is the first Black President. And we have not seen the venemous out pouring of disdain that we see now as people shout "TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK!!!!" So I wonder what the republicans are going to do to create jobs in the next year?? That's when the extension on benefits runs out, and we'll find ourselves faced with the same dilemma. Make the republicans look bad, I think not. If you were dealing with rational people, maybe so? But racism is soooo insidious; it is sooo deeply entrenched in the soul that it becomes easy to rationalize, and justify, and convince oneself that "I'm just being patriotic, I'm just concerned about my country". No, the republicans will come out on top, because they got the real victory when they got the pulse of America.

You're incorrect! The Republicans will be held accountable by Almighty God. Them racist demons didn't win nothing. President Obama stood up for the people and put the Republicans and the demonic Tea Party on front street. The Tea Party had always talked about President Obama's administration and big government / spending. But the so-called Tea Party didn't mention one word or publicly denounced the Republicans for keeping the rich, rich and adding approximately 700 billion to the deficit. The President are indeed sick and tired of them weak ass Demacrats that work around him, with him and really stands for the Republicans ideas. The Repulicans would never do right by the people or for the people. They are indeed a party of "NO" and wants the President to fail in every way possible. I will continue praying for the President and his family. These racist fools can't be trusted! Please have a bless day...

The president did the only honorable thing he could. This is all of our failure. The low Black voter turn out during the mid-terms are the reason a lot of the republicans are in office. Mr Obama is fighting a battle without our support. The republicans have the tea party out in force to spread their mis-information.

I agree! Why with all that blacks have been through, do we still have to have get out the vote rallies? The responsiblility is all of ours. Someone on this post said that O'bama is fighting this battle alone.
They are right. Until we start to own the problems and things that affect us and stand together and fight for better conditions for us, not even a black president can stop the inevitable.
Tavis Smiley tried to make this point and the black community attacked him because we were caught up in the euphoria of O'bama's election. It's time that we start looking at the big picture and stop worshipping at the feet of self serving ministers and politicians.

It's complete and total lunacy to believe the Pres did the right thing permitting the GOP to use the unemployed as a bargaining chip to get billions for the richest of the rich. The Pres failed because he didn't realize the GOP would not permit a tax hike to go into effect due to their actions. Obama failed to use his power and he made a terrible deal flipping on a key political issue. Obama looks like he stands for nothing. It's bad for foreign policy, the war, and future election prospects. Democrats would be better off saying, "No Deal." Dump this deal and make the GOP realize Democrats stand for something. We stand for you, not millionaires and billionaires. Obama is politically a liability. He's the ultimate "Flip Flopper."

You are dead wrong. The President understands what he is up against. If you think the republicans care about what we think or feel you are delusional. The Republicans and their friends will still be rich even if the tax cuts expire. The only people that will suffer is the hard working people. Thank goodness we have a President that really puts the people FIRST.
