The jury didn't deliberate for more than half an hour, but in that time, a 15-year-old boy was convicted in the beating death of 16-year-old honor student Derrion Albert.
The boy was convicted of first-degree murder when it was determined that he laid a punch to the face of Albert as he tried to stand up. The jury decided that the punch played a significant role in Albert's death.
"I am pleased. Justice was served," Norman Golliday, Albert's grandfather, told the Associated Press. "The facts were there from the start, they stared you right in the face. The jury saw that."

The teen's lawyer, Richard Kloak, admitted that his client punched Albert but said that the crime was not as serious as the conviction.
"I wish the jury had been given a third option. They had to decide [between] two choices, guilty or not guilty," he said. "I thought if I could give them a lesser crime that was proportionate to what he had done, it would be more palatable, but I didn't get to do that."
After the boy is sentenced on January 18th, he may end up spending the rest of his adolescence in prison. The greater challenge for him is that if he violates the terms of his sentence, he could get another 20 to 60 years behind bars.

Five teens have been charged in the murder, and the other four are being tried as adults. The next trial is set to occur on January 7th. Important testimony in the trial came from a pathologist who said that the punch contributed to Albert's death. The boy reportedly hit Albert so hard that he couldn't even use his hands to break his fall.
Roughly two dozen students left Fenger High School, after the Chicago Public School system gave them the option to transfer. Police have also created a database that tracks violent incidents in the school system, which has also pursued initiatives related to student safety as well as conflict resolution.
I become saddened every time I am asked to write about the death of Derrion Albert. I am not only sad for Derrion and his family, I am also sad for the boys on trial. Nearly every boy, at some point during his teenage life, gets in to a fight. The idea that this child could get 20 to 60 years in prison for throwing a punch is certainly problematic.
I can't imagine serving that much time in prison for a punch I might have thrown at the age of 15. The criminal justice system, as it pertains to African-American males, is in serious need of significant repair.
With that said, there is obviously the greater tragedy that a young boy is dead. Stronger adult intervention could have protected this young man from the bullying he might have faced at school.
Additionally, high-teen unemployment rates, in conjunction with very few after-school activities, served as significant contributors to Derrion Albert's death. By not providing healthy outlets for these boys to express the anger within their souls, we all played a role in killing Derrion Albert. This case represents one of a million tragedies in the experience of black males in America.

There's a difference between "getting in a fight" and beating someone to death. Something has got to be done to stop the violence.

Kids DO NOT think things through.
Mentally, they have not developed enough to consider consequences of their actions.
Unfortunate as it is I hope the kid responsible for "INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER" can get adequate counseling to have an eventual productive life.
20 years ago I probably would have shouted to put him under the jail, but as I age perspectives change.
This could have happened to any of one us.

You need an award to get it. Why is it today some people say children aren't responsible because there minds are developed full so they make the wrong decesions, thisis pure bull, these young crinimals know what they are doing and they do it any way, he got what he should gotten prison and the others should get the same thing.
Some Black people need to stop making excuses for them. The mothers that have them should not have had them in the first place, they didn't have the means of raising these children. Some of them stop going to school because they want to run the streets and act like fools, they fight, shot, rob, smoke and kill people, stop the bleeding hearts out there they should be in prison. I don't want them living on my street.

" I am also sad for the boys on trial. Nearly every boy, at some point during his teenage life, gets into a fight."
I'm sad after reading your articles in hopes that you'll encourage accountability in our people-you fail drastically!
There was no fight!!
Derrion Albert was ambushed!!
Imagine the last moments of this child's life and the pain inflicted on him! Being beaten until you draw your last breath! If you can't imagine that, than think of Jesus on the cross. How much pain he endured to have nails long & thick & sharp enough to go through his hands and feet! Oh how much pain He suffered until He gave up the ghost!!! If that thought doesn't cause your heart to skip a beat, then you're just as inhumane as the animals that killed Derrion Albert.
Rehabilitation for someone who kills purposefully at 14?
Rehabilitation after leaving the Chicago Juvenile Center? I don't think so
The 20-60 years that this boy may face additional to Juvenile time should be imposed. Save the rest of us the trouble, of worrying about being his next victim when he walks out @ 21!
He'll still be breathing-Derrion will still be dead.

Best comment posted. I totally agree with everything you said. And until parents start taking responsibilty for their children and their actions Derrion is not the first and won't be the last. MOST of these children are angry, they have NO RESPECT for AUTHORITY, PERIOD. Many disrespect their parents because so many parents want to be their kids friends and be cool or be a kid themselves instead of being an adult, a teacher, a leader, nurturer.Don't blame anybody but yourselves when kids act this way. At 18 thats fine at 15, 14 heck no. These kids think they are owed everything without working and earning nothing. No morals no values no respect. many dont value their own life so how do you expect them to value any others. Its sad...but these are the days and times we live ina dn as the bible states it will only get worst unil judgement day comes..ppl keep questionin gwhy..stop questioning get right with GOD becasue things of this earth does not matter

That line struck me as well. I think I'll sentence myself to an hour or so at the bar. That should teach me.
