This is one brave dude.
Or maybe he's completely bananas.
Either way, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, known on this blog as Soul Brotha No. 1, must be one or both to consider making a run for the RNC's top spot, especially when the GOP's favorite black dude right now is Barack Obama.
But the truth is another run makes sense for him, and here's why:
Steele, a former lieutenant governor of Maryland, became the first African American RNC chair about the same time President Obama was inaugurated. Since then, he's been known more for his political gaffes than his leadership (who can forget how he wanted to give the GOP more "hip-hop" flava).
During his tenure, the Republican party did become more powerful and threatening, not because of anything he did, but because of the emergence of the Tea Party, a rotten economy that turned moderates and Independents against the Democrats and lots and lots of funding from wealthy contributors who support Republicans.
When the Republicans swept the House and gained seats in the Senate last month, they thanked everyone but Steele, and I felt awful for him. This was the guy who was supposed to prove it's cool to be black and Republican. He was supposed to open up the marketplace of ideas for bringing brothers back to majority GOP voting after a 50-year absence. Instead, though, they ignored him. They acted like he didn't exist. Actually, I was kinda scared they'd leave him their shoes to shine.
Even still, on conference call with GOP leaders, Steele asked for Republican support, despite expectations that he might step aside, with the message being, "You were the alternative Negro, but we no longer need your services."
There are several contenders to the GOP throne that Steele must face: Saul Anuzis, chairman of the Michigan Republican Party who helped businessman Rick Snyder capture the governor's race; Gentry Collins, the former national GOP political director; and Maria Cino who did time in the Bush administration and is a Republican political veteran.
What are Steele's chances against these folks? We don't know yet. Although he was around for the brunt of Republican infighting and is likely to be blamed for the Party's current financial woes, he may well have a few political tricks up his sleeve, most notably that, short of Sarah Palin, he's the most recognizable Republican out there who does not hold a political office.
But also, Republicans might not want to change boats midstream. They've got power they haven't had in a long, long time and are damn sure going to do their best to depose President Obama before his first term is even up. It's not in the GOP's best interest to focus on internal political dynamics when they feel like Obama is going to start tap dancing now that he's "compromised" on the Bush tax cuts, and that is something Steele can use to his advantage.
So Steele might not be the Republican Party's Moses, and really not even its Sojourner Truth, but he does happen to be in the right place at the right time. If the GOP had washed out of the November midterm elections then he wouldn't have a snowball's chance.
Lucky for him, the GOP had Tea Baggers to give them all snow jobs.

Can any of these Black Elite Reporters ever report without seeing things thru their liberal prism? Here Mr. Clay gives a fairly good report but he has to spoil it by throwing in his little liberal diggs.

"spoil it by throwing in his little liberal diggs"
Exactly! Plus you will notice, that no BV commentator has written a peep about "That token Jim Clyburn"
Whether one agrees with Steele or not, at least he ran and won (6rds) of elections on his on. Steele may well lose, but he well win or lose on his merits. Nobody had to create a position for Mike.
Token Jim, couldnt even run, let alone win. So Mrs Nancy had to create a job for him. And thats your democratic plantation party for you. The helpless hapless negroe cant do anything without (liberal)help, and thats just BS.
Token Jim is supposedly third in rank, yet He wasnt even included in the tax negotiations, Nancy and Steny were there, why not Jim.
Cry and whine about Mike all you want, but at least he will sink or swim on his own, and I respect that!

Well, I'm sure you do realize that the majority of Black people lean more towards liberal views in politics. I'm not sure why you're so bent out of shape that the author writes from this prospective. BV is blog, not a formal news outlet site, like CNN or CBS, NBC or ABC news.
I'm not going to engage in political debate here with you, but I do wonder why you stoop to name calling; "Black Elite Reporters" Because someone went to college and built a career for themselves, they're "elite"?!
Just as an FYI for you and your Republican/Tea Party friends. The definition if elite is:
–noun
1.(often used with a plural verb ) the choice or best of anything considered collectively, as of a group or class of persons.
2.(used with a plural verb ) persons of the highest class: Only the elite were there.
3.a group of persons exercising the major share of authority or influence within a larger group: the power elite of a major political party.
Its not that you're calling individuals elite, but that all liberals, (regardless race or class) are elites. If you look at definition 3, I would argue that most people, PARTICULARLY "minorities" would not at all fit this definition of elite.

The Republicans no longer need this guy. Now, he's going to know what it feels like when a token is no longer needed (like Obama). They have both republican and tea party representation for white, rich establishment.

I am not a Steele fan, however, if he wants to run he should. My reason is if Palin wants to run for the highest office in our land, he should, but the Republicans got him to try to off set the Clinton voters and it didn't work, only because he is Black.
Steele play's games and he talk's the way White people think Black talk, he think's he is smarter for speaking in the manner, but it is dumb on his part and it was dumber for the Republicans for giving him his job. All Steele wanted was the power and the money and now the Republicans want to take it all away, just another Black fool believing he would be viewed was any different way.

No Jai,I don't realize that the majority of Black people lean more towards liberal views in politics. Because most Blacks lean towards conservative views in politics, but they vote for democrats who are liberal. And I used the word (elite) correctly. I was referring specifically to most of the educated Black Liberals who think they speak for all Blacks. If Mr. Gray is going to report on a political event then just give the report, even on a blog. And if he is going to give his opinion then he should say "in his liberal opinion."
