After seeing the success of Brown's case, doctors are confident that they can possibly construct a cure for HIV by using genetically-engineered stem cells. In addition to the Brown case, doctors also found that healthy patients who take antiretrovirals, which are typically prescribed to HIV patients, can reduce their chances of infection by 73 percent.
These developments are critical, given that there are 33 million people infected with HIV. Families are ruined because of the disease, and the African American community is disproportionately impacted. The disease is especially frightening due to the fact that it withstands a prolonged incubation period before taking effect. This leads to the carrier infecting quite a few other people before he/she finds their way to treatment.
To date, African Americans are only 13 percent of the population, but represent 40 percent of all deaths related to HIV. Additionally, we represent half of the one million Americans living with HIV. So, this disease has a tremendous impact on our community, and this study can change the lives of quite a few members of our community.
All of us should be educated about HIV and we must also adjust our approach to sexuality. Difficult questions must be asked, instead of simply trusting that a person who looks clean is safe. The old song by Big Pun with the lyrics "Don't wanna be a playa no more," has relevance today, given that many of us think that our actions in the past can't impact our future. But the truth is that being a "playa" for a few years may have long-term consequences that impact your ability to get married and have children later on down the road. Perhaps it's time to think again and be a bit more careful. Oh yea - get tested....if your partner doesn't ever go to the doctor but has had multiple sex partners, you are putting yourself in harm's way. Make sure you are aware of your status.

I am glad that modern science is making incredible progress in attacking this deadly disease. But, let us see how long it will take for this story to hit the back burner. The power structure that be, does not want to cure this hideous disease, they want to profit from it. Uh ... can anyone say "Sicko"! If HIV/AIDS is cured, the pharmaceutical companies will lose a lot of money! The same can be said for cancer and other terminal diseases out there.

You're exactly right. The drug companies will make more money by just controlling the virus, than curing it. I think they can cure it too, if they wanted to. How is that people like Magic Johnson can live with HIV so under control, but yet not all the way cured?

you are totally correct. ive never met an individual who understood the term stem cell research and didnt support it. It is an amazing scientific breakthroug, stem cells can cure diabetes and cancer as well if the money is put into the research. the pharmecutical companies dont want this because of greed. its the same reason marijuana is against the law. pot is a victomless crime which cures many ailments including the harsh side effects of chemotherapy. we as a people need to open our eyes and support stem cell reseach becuase it is one of the answers weve been looking for for many years.

This is nothing new! We always know there was a cure, but only the super rich can afford this treatment. Magic Johnson is cured, now he’s just a spokesman for Combivir the once a pill a day regimen for peoples that can afford the expensive drug. This is one of many drugs on the market today to help you maintain an undetectable level of the virus to help suppress the disease.

Well now the money games begin. The insurance companies are gonna charge a mint for that cure. And there will be different tier levels of treatments for the rich and the poor. But first, they're gonna drag out the FDA trials for several years or more so the insurance companies can finish draining your bank accounts. So don't ya'll start going crazy and having indiscriminate unprotected sex like the world's gonna end tomorrow. The cure might not be available to the average consumer for many years. And don't forget your old pal, herpes simplex is still out there waiting for you.
