Most remarkable about the situation was that Republicans have been the key opponents to helping the victims, in spite of the fact that they pride themselves on being exceedingly patriotic. Republicans were first in line to finance the trillion dollar wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and also quick to support tax cuts for the wealthy, which will cost over a trillion dollars before they expire. All the while, Republicans argued that the original 9/11 responders bill of $7.4 billion was too expensive. After extensive compromise with Republicans, the cost of the bill was dropped to $4.3 billion.
Passage of the bill took a great deal of lobbying from New York representatives over the years. It calls for $1.8 billion dollars to treat injuries from toxic dust exposure at ground zero. Currently, there are 60,000 people enrolled in 9/11 treatment programs. In addition, there will be a $2.5 billion dollar compensation fund set aside for 9/11 victims and their families.
Republicans had worked to derail the original bill passed by Congress, eventually caving in to public criticism over their efforts to block the bill. This public relations disaster, in conjunction with their recent branding as the party of the rich, has led to some Republican backpedaling as they try to explain their position.
"Every American recognizes the heroism of the 9/11 first responders," said Republican Senator Tom Coburn. "But it is not compassionate to help one group while robbing future generations of opportunity."
It seems that Senator Coburn and his fellow Republicans are only concerned about robbing future Americans when the beneficiaries of the "robbery" happen to be working class people. It's one thing to argue that the bill costs too much in an absolute sense. It's another to reject the bill over cost concerns and then offer trillions of dollars in free money to people who don't need it.
The Democratic Party has problems of its own, but the Republicans are quick to draw clear lines in the sand. The party represents the wealthy, big business, those who profit from war and those who benefit from racial inequality. Why people outside this group support the Republican Party is clearly beyond me.

"Why people outside this group support the Republican Party is clearly beyond me".
Im not suggesting Republicans are perfect, for from it. However i can see why some black folk would be republican.
Anyone reasonbale person can make a solid case that every sense Black folks have alligned ourselves with /democrates, why have been downward spiral. That has placed us dead last in every positive statiscal category as measured by the government, but first in every negative category.
Im an independet myself, but let me help you out?
1. the liberal party pushes programs that keep us dependent on government handouts and temporary “fixes,” and encourages us to see ourselves as everlasting victims.
2. Democrats subsidize irresponsible behavior.
3. As a result of the Democrats' "well-intentioned" welfare policies, we now have a 70% illegitimacy rate in the black community.
---Yet the black family, which survived slavery, vicious racism, and the Jim Crow laws, has been especially "decimated by welfare". After all, this rewards women for having babies out of wedlock, and absolves fathers of their responsibility, instead making Uncle Sam the substitute husband.
4.Democrates have rob us of our once "Great" entrepreneurial spirit, which would assits us in breaking the cycle of poverty.
5. Damn near, if not every failing public school are in the hands of Democrats.
---The GOP promotes school vouchers that would allow African-American kids to escape failing schools.
6. Democrates do not advocate "standing up on your own two feet", rather it is "you are incapable of standing on your own two feet"
7. Democratic policies are patronizing and insulting.
8. “In the 26 major civil rights votes after 1933, a "majority" of Democrats opposed civil rights legislation in over 80 percent of the votes. By contrast, the Republican majority favored civil rights in over 96 percent of the votes.”
9. We are opposed to abortion or homosexual marriage.
10. The teachers unions' whose agendas are very harmful to blacks. Regarding edcuation Democrates and unions have dont nothing but fail black students, in public schools.
So yeah i can why!

"Why people outside this group support the Republican Party is clearly beyond me".
I too can see why.
1. it wasnt republicans who denied my G/Parents their civil rights
2. It wasnt Republicans roaming the countryside lynching folks
3. It wasnt Republicans not voting for civil
rights legislation.
Watkins is always attaching every thing to slavery. Everything has its roots in black bondage, but you will notice, he never speaks about those who where responsible. Instead he broadly attributes it to "whites". When a more accurate statement whould be WHITE DEMOCRATS.
White Democrates are responsiable for "Separate But Equal, Slave Codes, and Segregation. They controlled black folks then, and they are controlling us now.
So i understand why a person of color may choose to leave the planation. I cant understand why anyone would stay.

I agree wholeheartedly with Brady and Slick. I always get more out of the comments than the actual articles. The articles are the same old predictable democratic drivel (and lies) they've been spreading since the party came into existence. I voted first in '84 and I was registered Independent then, and I'm registered Independent now.
As of today, I realize the futility (how disappointing) in thinking that democrats have more black members; therefore, democrats must be the better option for black people. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. Correct analysis seems to be to run in the opposite direction of democrat blacks who are clamoring to be our reps cause they're lying and only look to enrich themselves. They know if they do a good job selling us down the river, the Khazars will keep them in the money. What a shame.
Well, at least our history has certainly informed us how to react after being betrayed and disappointed. We're to drop the con artists, pick ourselves off the ground, and try try again.

Yeah Mike
It just one big plantation ran by white liberals and their black intellectual flunkies.
It not about "What can they do for themselves" rather what can "we provide for them". Just like a damn plantation.
Liberals (both white and black) think Black Folk are completly helpless and clueless without them providing for us. Its damn insulting!
History clearly shows that as a group, the greatest reduction in poverty occurred before 1960's, that is when we were Republicans.

The Republicans are not against helping anybody as this artical assumes. But try to grasp this... THERE IS NO MONEY!!!!! WE ARE BROKE. WE ARE IN DEBT!!! At least the Repubs want to be accountable to where it is going to come from??? And not just the magic OBAMA money tree. ANY American, of any party (or NO party) needs to appreciate the need to be fiscally responsible. However, many are too entrenched in the entitlement mentality, I guess.
