Dupree served more time in a Texas prison than any other innocent person in the history of the state. There are only two others in this country who have served more time and been exonerated, according to the Innocence Project:
"Cornelius Dupree spent the prime of his life behind bars because of mistaken identification that probably would have been avoided if the best practices now used in Dallas had been employed," said Barry Scheck, co-director of the Innocence Project. "Let us never forget that, as in the heartbreaking case of Cornelius Dupree, a staggering 75 percent of wrongful convictions of people later cleared by DNA evidence resulted from misidentifications."
Dupree is now 51 years old. He was accused of being in a group of two men who forced a woman and her male friend in to a car and then raping the woman. Dupree was identified by the woman in a police lineup, but the male did not identify him. At trial, though, both victims claimed that Dupree and Anthony Massingill were the men who committed the crime, and Dupree was given 75 years in prison.
For three decades, Dupree fought for his innocence and was turned down for appeal on all three occasions. The Texas prison system is known for being the harshest and most racist justice system in the United States.
According to Robert Perkinson, a historian at The University of Hawaii, the Texas prison system gave 30 years to Lee Otis Johnson, a black power advocate who simply passed a joint to an undercover officer. To this day, there are seven times more black prison inmates in Texas than whites, according to Professor Perkinson's book "Texas Tough: The Rise and Fall of the Prison Emprire."
Whether in the state of Texas or in a place like Georgia, where the inmates went on strike last month, prison reform is needed. If you believe that Cornelius Dupree is the only innocent man behind bars, you're sadly mistaken.
The truth is that the Innocence Project, as brilliant as it may be, only has the resources to investigate a limited number of cases. Additionally, most of the men and women freed by the Innocence Project happen to be African American. This argues for the necessity of black organizations, politicians and regular citizens to supplement the great work of the Innocence Project by demanding substantial reform in the Prison Industrial Complex.
Prison reform is not about saving guilty people. It's about saving our families who've been historically persecuted by a system that has its roots in slavery. For African Americans, there is no justice in our so-called justice system.

Dr. Watkins,
I agree there are innocent people in prison as well as there are guilty people walking free.
I'm happy for this man and his family that after going through what he did, he is now a free man.
Throughout most of your articles in regard to prison, you insinuate that there should be a special system for black criminals.
I'm really curious: if given the old magic wand theory, what would the world look like according to you. Your fellow black Jesse Lee Peterson states that if the white race would disappear, black American s would turn the USA into a huge Ghetto within three years.
You are the only race that thinks you can succeed with fatherless families. Other races come to the United States , work and go home to their families at night. (Even the Illegals)
In one of your many articles, please write one explaining what should be done, not just finger pointing. I would love to hear your answer.

For all you race baiters out there with a "Down with whitey" perspective...
Notice the 2 people standing with and defending Mr. Dupree.

We are suppose to co-exist as human beings. I can not image a world with out the cultural and racial variety that we have Black,White,Asian,Latin etc.Even the cultural differences within race vary depending upon many factors like state, cities and countries. However I can image a world with a fair shake for every man, women and child regardless of race or culture etc.
The black families don't think they can succeed without fathers. Many have to succeed without a father this is a American cultural issue not a black issue. Many families of other races are now fatherless. There are more white fatherless families then black. Due to the minority status of blacks(less in the American population)the percentages are higher.
And then there is the one factor that can not be ignored the fact that the black family has been historically dismantled since the African Diaspora (the movement of Black Africans and their descendants to places throughout the world)I must say we (black and white etc..) have a long way to go but we have made much progress and given the circumstances we have fared very well resilient people we are laughing to keep from crying, partying to keep from dying (lol).
In the end we are all Human Beings that have to figure our way in this existence and secure resources for our descendants.History shows us that all races and cultures have done this successfully the White,European or Caucasian are now at the height of their time respectively I understand this as I am sure you do also. However it is in my nature to have concern for all but I feel compelled to have more compassion for those I have common ground with no matter their race.
Just to let it be known I grew up in a single parent home and I'm now married with kids and come home to my family ever single night as does my brother and about 35 more black men I know personally as friends.Rampant promiscuity among black men is more myth then fact what you see on TV. does not represent the majority. It represents what's entertaining to the American viewers.

Bet it was a white woman that this negro allegedly "raped" too. I would find that woman and sue her for the 30 years of your life that you lost.

When Eve tempted Adam, even though she was in the wrong, God did not let Adam off of the hook! You are judged according to the knowledge and light you have regardless of what someone else does!! Regardless of what a black man does God holds you accountable for the light you have!! Even though Adam had more accountability,God held Even accountable and punished her also, because she was not totally in the dark!!!! She even told satan that god had told them not to eat from the tree!! So she knew something about right or wrong and she was held accountable for it!! You are confused the issue and jumping to something else despite the proven bias of the racist system.
Should I apply that same logic to women? White females benefitted more from affirmative action than any other group.
According to this article White women (who were the primary beneficiaries of affirmative action) helped overthrow it!
“Given the state of Washington's racial demographics, where 86% of the population is white (and the proportion of white voters even higher), the Houston strategy designed to counteract the misleading nature of an anti- affirmative action proposition could not be expected to make the difference. Thus, white women became the primary target audience on which were spent the precious resources of the pro-affirmative action coalition. But that strategy too failed. To the surprise of many experts, I-200 passed by a comfortable margin garnering 58 percent of the vote. More surprisingly, approximately 51% of white women in Washington voted to end affirmative action. This support was in keeping with the Houston case where 54% of white women voted against affirmative action, with the percentage even higher in California--58 percent of white women in favor of Prop 209.
So what happened? Why didn't at least a simple majority of white women support affirmative action in any of these casesCho, S. (n.d.). White women and affirmative action. Retrieved from http://academic.udayton.edu/race/04needs/affirm23.htm? “
Why can't I use your same logic and say women should be mistreated since they turn around and destroyed their own rights? why can that logic only be applied to black people?

"To this day, there are seven times more black prison inmates in Texas than whites, according to Professor Perkinson's book . . "
That's factually Incorrect. There is an equal number of blacks and whites in prison.

The numbers of innocent men and women...especially Black and Latino Men, who have died in prison without ever having had their names cleared is probably quite shameful in a nation that proclaims equal standards of justice for all. Although a majority of those convicted of crimes in America are guilty, there are many thousands of minorities that are behind bars, often for decades, for crimes that they DID NOT commit.
DNA has freed quite a few people, again MOSTLY Black and Latino men who were thrown into prison in the rush to judgement. The question that begs to be asked in light of this is, HOW MANY innocent Black and Latino men currently waste away today in the American Prison system due to ineptness by Court appointed legal aide, the rush to judgement by a biased and over-zealous Prosecutor or criminal activity by Police....or...all three?

You are right. That being said. Once figured out you will realize the system is rigged. It has always been rigged and the people are, for the most part, ignorant as to how bad things really are.
They feel so fortunate that they are surviving and cannot figure out how, if they can do it why everyone else can't. They are living an illusion. They are delusional, and they know not what they think or do.
Should they be forgiven? I think not. For It is they who help to drag the whole world down a desperate path of great human destruction.
All over the world people are being instigated and pitted against each other, but have not a clue that there is an nearly invisible third party creating this madness. It's easy to do if you have the right kind of power and wealth. All you need is to understand that humans are quite gullible and easily manipulated.
Humans. So simple minded they practice superstitious beliefs and antiquated rituals while calling themselves advanced. And millions die from humans murdering humans.
The question remains. Who profits from this?
