Obama Names William Daley as White House Chief of Staff

Chi-Town stand up!

President Barack Obama is keeping it all Chicago, all the time in the White House.

He named William Daley, son of deceased Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley and brother to outgoing Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, as his new chief of staff.

In addition to his family's political pedigree, Daley has some pedigree of his own, having served as Secretary of Commerce under former President Bill Clinton.

Obama said that Daley "possesses a deep understanding of how jobs are created and how to grow our economy."

"Few Americans can boast the breadth of experience that Bill brings to this job," the President said.

Daley also had great things to say about his new boss.

"You, Mr. President, have proven your strength, your leadership, your vision during a most difficult time for our nation and for the world," Daley said. "I am pleased to answer your call."

Some say that hiring Daley, who handled lobbying efforts for JP Morgan Chase, was a savvy move by Obama because of Daley's ties to the business community and his experience in dealing with members of both parties.

Others say he's part of the problem and representative of the influence big business has on Washington.

With a need to emphasize job creation to help spur the economy and a ravenous group of Tea Party Republicans waiting to knock Obama down before his upcoming re-election bid, Daley may be the right man for a tough gig.

"This is a strong appointment," Thomas J. Donohue, president of the United States Chamber of Commerce, told the New York Times. "Bill Daley is a man of stature and extraordinary experience in government, business, trade negotiations and global affairs."

The Chamber of Commerce has been extremely critical of Obama and funded many Republican candidates in the mid-term elections.

Some, though, are questioning whether the appointment violates Obama's promise to limit the power of special interests in Washington.

MoveOn.org said Daley's ties to "Big Banks and Big Business,....is troubling and sends the wrong message to the American people."

Obama should choose someone he's comfortable with to be his chief of staff.

It's not uncommon for U.S. presidents to surround themselves with people from their home turfs, said Julian Zelizer, a Princeton University history professor who specializes in the presidency told the Los Angeles Times.

"It's a common attack. When Carter was president, everyone complained about the 'Georgia mafia.' When Kennedy was in the White House, it was the 'Boston mafia,' " he said. "There's always this kind of attack that the president is surrounded by an insular group that doesn't allow him to see what the rest of America is thinking."

Having someone that can help him deal with Republicans and work with the business community is a big benefit.

At the same time, Obama needs to have control of his chief of staff. The chief of staff still has to answer to the President.

Obama, if he is bright, will control the agenda. It's not like Obama hired Sarah Palin as his chief of staff. Liberals need to take a chill pill. Obama has had some great accomplishments in a short period of time.

At the same time, Obama should remember that the buck stops with him.
