They're college basketball's most talked about team that never won anything, known as the Fab Five, Michigan's 1991 recruiting class, which included Jalen Rose, Jimmy King, Ray Jackson, Chris Webber and Juwan Howard. Interesting to see that 18 years later, they still harbor some bitterness over what they weren't able to accomplish. With special acrimony still reserved for Duke. Rose, King and Jackson appeared on ESPN's 'First Take' this morning to discuss 30 for 30's documentary on the Fab Five that will air on Sunday.
About midway through the First Take segment, they played a clip from the documentary in which Rose says:
"For me, Duke was personal. I hated Duke. And I hated everything I felt Duke stood for. Schools like Duke didn't recruit players like me. I felt like they only recruited black players that were Uncle Toms."
Asked about the comment, Rose didn't exactly backtrack, but elaborated:
"Well, certain schools recruit a typical kind of player whether the world admits it or not. And Duke is one of those schools. They recruit black players from polished families, accomplished families. And that's fine. That's okay. But when you're an inner-city kid playing in a public school league, you know that certain schools aren't going to recruit you. That's one. And I'm okay with it. That's how I felt as an 18-year-old kid."

I must admit one thing though. All the Brothas on Duke Basketball teams graduated and the one's who didn't go pro probably have very good jobs.
Those Duke, fans and alumni are basketball freaks and some, just happen to own and run companies and corporations. I tell you what! If I played for Duke and didn't go pro, I bet, I'll be working at an Alumnus firm or recommended, wearing a Brooks Brother suit to work every day.
I'm not sweating the Brothas, more power to them.
As far as the racist, negative whites on Black Voices (not all whites on BV are racist)they need to take their sorry azzes back to the stormfront or where ever the hell they come from because they don't have nothing to contribute to our conversations.

In truth we're not talking about "Uncle Toms" we're really talking about Duke not wanting Black players that want to wear their pants hanging off their butts, or being ghetto! If, that's was, or is their goal, then I fully concur!

Ya can't call GRANT HILL an UNCLE TOM Mr. Rose. Can't HATE on a brotha just because his daddy had the BALLS to work hard and give his family a better life. Both of you guys are products of PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES(Jalen's pop is JIMMY WALKER who played for the DETROIT PISTONS). Calvin Hill just did the RIGHT THING and took care of his family while Jimmy didn't.

1 more thing about DUKE. Many of their players earn a college degree. They didnt go to college to play sports.[LAWERANCE TAYLOR] Sound familar.

What a clown. His comment represents the self destructive ignorance that plagues are community today. Dudes come from strong households and they become Uncle Toms? Because i thought that ugly term was reserved for those who bow, cater and demean themselves to the White man in an attempt to fit in,, not because they had parents who strived to provide a better life for their child that obviously worked out if that child was on their way to a scholarship at Duke.

Good comment, AClark008.
I'm actually a white guy that went to Duke, and agree 100% with your assessment.
I can understand why Rose had the "Uncle Tom" view of Duke as an 18 year old inner-city kid. Although some might think that my race, education, and/or economic status makes it impossible for me to understand Rose's thoughts, the truth is that one constant cuts across all racial and ethnic barriers: It all starts at home. Kids learning right from wrong in strong families have a much better chance of succeeding in life, and it doesn't matter whether you're black, white or purple. Kids gain confidence when they're raised in solid families, which in turn makes it easier for them to step outside their comfort zone and not be afraid to achieve. Even if a black person is reluctant to attend Duke because it's a "white school" (which it largely is), an education from Duke provides tremendous opportunity for the future. It shows character to take that risk and step outside the box, and the parents are the ones that provide the confidence to take those risks. Without strong parenting, American society will stay mired in race problems.
As an aside, I found the anti-Duke comments interesting in light of the fact that Chris Webber didn't participate in this documentary. Duke recruited him hard.
