Veteran Democratic Congressman John Conyers voiced some disappointment in President Barack Obama - and said he wants to help the leader of his party to do better.
In a speech at the National Press Club on Monday, Conyers criticized Obama on a number of fronts - from his overhaul of the U.S. healthcare system and management of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to agreeing to Republican demands last year to extend tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.
Conyers, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, was first elected to Congress in 1964 - three years before Obama was born. He backs Obama, but says, "I just want to make him a better president."
Conyers is not alone in his complaints. A number of Democrats in Congress have expressed frustration with Obama, particularly for what they describe as his failure to push harder on liberal issues.

"The recent debate on healthcare has allowed opponents of the new law to say we have gone too far - when the truth is we have not gone far enough," said Conyers, a backer of "a single payer" approach that would have a greater government involvement in delivery of health care.
"We've been in Afghanistan and Iraq for a decade, and it's time to leave both," he said.
"Jobs cost House Democrats the election last year and could next cost (Democrats) the Senate and the presidency in 2012 unless we address the issue," he said. "Pandering by giving Republicans more tax cuts is the wrong strategy that has not worked for the last 10 years to create jobs."

The Republicans don't have a candidate yet. The one person I thought they'd want to run against Obama was Massachusetts's Senator Scott Brown.
But now I'm not sure he wants to. Last month he came out with a book that told in detail
how he was sexually abused as a child.
And I'm sure reporters won't let that die.
So if there is no one who can beat Obama, then he will win the next election.
Obama has my vote because it takes at least two terms to get the job done.

I agree that whatever Obama does he will not be doing enough for someone. He is a man, who walked aboard a sinking ship [willingly] trying to save the American people and upon coming aboard realized that he HAS to work with crew that is only concerned with saving the wealthy...
Can he do better, more, is he trying, my goodness yes to all of the above...he could do more, he could do better and YES he is trying to save us while he has to deal with the haters and ememies.
To think this man walks on water...while on a sinking ship means we have turned him into a deity instead of a man who deserves the time and support to accomplish what he set out to do. There is NO one better, in Dems or Repubs that might run...most of the Repubs are clowns and don't think white America, working class America doesn't realize that. Working class America knows Obama is the only choice, and they will elect him into office again. Our country is in too much trouble to divide this into a black/white thing...this is a have or have not thing...and folks are scared. They are becoming more informed, there is no other choice. He has to lean sometimes to make things happen, doing things one way, my way only sometimes does not get the objective accomplished.
To bash him {Obama}, makes one lift a brow--if you have a better solution and are in a position of leadership as Conyers is...and the President is avail to you, why speak in the open, why not bring this so called wisdom to the leader of our country behind closed doors...what is Conyers agenda is my question.

All I can say is history will tell if Obama turns out 2 B a good president or not. It's usually years after a president's term ends before the full truth comes out. Remember we don't know everything that goes on behind closed doors.

Everyone wants to say what the president hasn't done, or should do. That's bc we're not walking in his shoes. Probably the only ones that understand the full story are (previous) presidents bc they've been there, and done that. The rest of us need to shut up.

Well, one thing we can definitely say about Obama's "shoes" is that they are on vacation a lot. Now he's going on vacation in Brazil, just as the world would normally expect an American commander in chief to be on the job when their are serious crises in the Middle East and Japan. Oh, I forgot, he's not the commander in chief, he's the community organizer in chief.
