Jessica Tata (pictured), who fled to Africa trying to escape charges of leaving her Texas daycare center unattended to go shopping while the building caught fire, is expected back in the United States on Monday.
Tata fled to Nigeria two days after her daycare center caught fire on Feb. 24, killing four children and severely injuring three others. The 22-year-old was charged with manslaughter, reckless injury to a child and child abandonment amid accusations that she went off to Target to do some shopping and left the small children, ranging from 15 months to 3 years, alone and unattended.
Tata allegedly lied to investigators, telling them she was in the bathroom of the daycare when the fire started. A nearby Target store has the video of Tata entering and departing the retailer during the time in question surrounding the blaze.
Fire department officials concluded that the home daycare blaze was caused by a stove top burner that had been left on.
Houston Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee made the Tata case a high priority and met with State Department officials to ask them to request that the Nigerian government put more resources into arresting one of America's most wanted. The Congresswoman also contacted Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Attorney General Eric Holder regarding Tata's capture.
After meeting with the State Department officials, Congresswoman Lee issued the following statement:
"We understand that the United States has a valid Extradition Treaty with Nigeria since 1931. I therefore urgently request that the State Department and the Department of Justice officially send additional U.S. law enforcement officers to Nigeria, and that they engage the Nigerian government and urgently ask for their immediate and intensified efforts to find, detain and arrest this alleged perpetrator who has left 4 dead babies in Harris County and some 3 other babies fighting for their lives while their parents and loved ones suffer in a state of excruciating anguish. I am certain that both departments are engaged in diligent efforts to work with the international community to locate Ms. Tata."
Congresswoman Lee's steadfast efforts finally paid off.
Tata reportedly departed Lagos, Nigeria, on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. CDT and is expected to be in Houston 24 hours later on Monday. The U.S. Marshals Service was put on the case and led the search for Tata, placing her on a list of the 15 most-wanted fugitives and offered a reward of up to $25,000.
"I am glad she decided to make the right decision, which is to return to this country of which she is a citizen in order to face the charges against her," Congresswoman Lee told the Associated Press.

@uub140: What does the way Mrs Obama wear her hair have to do with us contributing to killing our own kids and not respecting ourselves? Typical black people, we are quick to pass the buck but slow to find a solution.
We can't be better if we as a people don't accept better. We settle and blame. Start by looking within and working to contribute to a solution without blaming but claiming.

Let's not lump all black women in a ball and say that they are all bad. Like all races of people there are good ones and bad ones. White and hispanic women are bad people as well. The white mother who killed all of her OWN children and blamed it on a black man and the hispanic mother who cries on television about her child who was run over by a train but cannot say where she was while her child was playing on the tracks.
Blacks, as a race, are doing no worse than any other. We just tend to be more vocal and "in your face" with ours. As the HUMAN race we need to do better. Take responsibility for our actions and learn from them.
As for your comments about Michelle Obama why do you feel she needs to fashion herself after a "white woman" in order to get respect. Should she be more like Laura Bush and let her daughters run amuck and get drunk and party or should she grow a garden and show them how the food that is best for them to eat comes from the ground. My kids and I planted tomatos and cucumbers last year and with the price of produce right now I appreciate it. It has also encouraged my kids to eat more vegetables. I am proud to be a "BW". I am doing better than my mother and I pray that my daughter does better than me.

Hey Moron, what does the first Lady have to do with this girl leaving kids home alone with the stove on, to buy groceries? You are just looking for an excuse to spread your vile message. Seems to me you're the one showing a "typical" side of a black woman (as you would say), angry, putting each other down and just plain uninformed and crazy. You can't even stay on topic, did you even read the article? The article said nothing about rap music, the first Lady, prisons or anything of the sort. The next time you feel the need to say something, dont.

Horrific.I'm glad she was caught.Enough taxpayers money was used in tracking her down now they should give her a needle and be done with it. As a parent that's what I believe. However, it was a tragic, negligent mistake so life in prison is best.Nope, she deserve a needle and eternity in hell.People were at work, believing that their children were being properly attended to.I've a strong feeling that this isn't the first time she left them alone.Parents will now have another reason to just pop-in on their children's daycare and learn to get references and google the daycare owners because most times these people are negligent in their personal life.

uub140. You are a trip. I see why people are making comments. You sounded so immature with your comments. All woman do stupid foolish things, some and in the media and some are not and usually the BW stupidity is shown. Stop criticizing your own people and get some knowledge!!!

How on earth are we expected to clesan up our act, when in reality we can't, nor are even willing to clean up our own communities? where the pride, dignity, and the respect? All that respect that we're always ranting about having? We cannot clean up our cultural icons in crime-rejectin versus injection, "ho" bashing rap music, role model ministers, because in truth most black people just don't care! They're very comfortable with those kinds of negative images! And, then expect to be treated as equal law abiding citizens! We as a people will never make any real advancements, because we are in a perpetual state of denial!

I'm not at all surprised to see her back in the US at all! There was just no where to run, and no where to hide!
