From McClatchy:
WASHINGTON - House Assistant Democratic Leader Jim Clyburn objected Thursday to coverage of his views on the impact of President Barack Obama's race on assessments of his performance in the White House.
In a letter to the editor of The State newspaper in Clyburn's hometown of Columbia, S.C., the No. 3 House Democrat said an article published Thursday had sensationalized his perspectives on the ties between Obama's race and his work as president.
"I have always abhorred the word 'racism,' " Clyburn said in the letter. "I never use it. I believe it is a lethal term, and I am offended that my honest responses to a reporter's clearly designed agenda would be distorted in such a manner."
The article was published in The State, in other South Carolina newspapers and on dozens of McClatchy and non-McClatchy websites around the country.
There were more than 1,100 comments about the article within 24 hours of its posting on www.mccclatchydc.com and more than 450 comments on www.thestate.com in the same period.
"You know, I'm 70 years old," the article quoted Clyburn as saying. "And I can tell you; people don't like to deal with it, but the fact of the matter is, the president's problems are in large measure because of his skin color."

@james ellis Well James, lets put the shoe on the other foot shall we? I am over 50 years old and have seen several towns gone downhill because of black and brown infiltration and white flight. My family my siblings and I have been robbed, jacked, and looted by blacks and hispanics. Its ironic that you say all races hate the white race. In fact the total opposite is true. All races envy the white race that is true but hate and fear, well james the black race holds that honor.

I find some of the white race amusing as well. I think they are in denial and dont know their history. Their theivery is at another level, for instance running prostition, human trafficking, and corporate crimes. How bout slaughtering the indians for something that was rightfully theirs, bringing drugs in the country. Certainly you dont think its us with the speed boats and planes carrying your precious cargo over here do ya? I dont blame you for not wanting to take a look at your ownself, nothing to be proud of and certainly nothing to brag about. I think in a nutshell its self-hatred you have! We were taught to pray for the white race because the behavoir can only be described as pure evil. I will end this in saying without a doubt there are some wonderful and compassionate people in the white race, God forbid that I say "all white people" are evil and hate themselves.
PEACE,

Rep. James Clyburn is the last person anyone should trust or approach for credible commentary on racism and politics. What Clyburn did not mention was how he rose to prominence on the coattails of President Clinton, only to viciously exploit race to accuse Bill Clinton of being racist during the 2008 Democratic primary smear by Team Obama of his rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton.
By portraying Bill Clinton (the man Toni Morrison once mused was our first black president) as a racist, Clyburn paved the way for Obama to win the SC primary and successfully turn the 2008 Presidential election into a referendum on racism in America.
Now Clyburn's daughter has a prized appointment from the Obama WH and is a major player for the FCC, and Clyburn continues to cry racism at the drop of a hat to protect Obama, while ordinary black people suffer by the tens of millions as Obama ignores Black America. Sadly, black people in Clyburn's SC district are feeling the withering effects of Obama's abandonment, but Clyburn wallows in the money and influence of being a sycophant of President Obama's.
Rarely do I feel shame as a black man, but it always seems to happen when James Clyburn opens his mouth to spew divisive ignorance and poison the well of legitimate political discourse.

Mr Edmond
Congratulations on your eloquence and your knowledge of FACT. To bad I can’t be as well written as you. Clyburn is guilty of doing what Democrats always do, play the race card to distract us, from truth.
The good thing some of us, are not buying this crap any more. Many are waking up to the reality of the situation.
The play us like a fiddle, as soon as enough people rightfully start to question any democratic administration, HERE COMES OLE FAITHFUL, THE RACE CARD. And true to form we fall for it every damn time, that’s not to say, the issue should be ignored, but its skews the reality of the situation.
Racism is not the answer all, it doesn’t explain Obama inattentiveness. It doesn’t explain his actions for others and nothing specific for his base. Others got their pay back, what’s wrong with asking for ours.
Hasn’t anyone noticed that every since the so called black media was invited to the White house last November practically all have all but bent over.
In other words they got there long sought after status, and return for that status, no criticism of Obama. The few that tell the truth are bombarded by that same so called black media.
The fake black media is working overtime trying to silence the growing number of Black people who are feed up with speeches and lectures. Anyone who dares speak up is jealous, haten, conservative, uncle tom, or my favorite, a member of the tea party.
It just never dawns on us that the person may be telling the truth. All we got is the old crabs in a barrel bullsh_t.
No one is pulling Obama down, all people are saying is MAN COME ON NOW, we have patiently waited long enough, you have taken care of others and some even jumped the line. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!
The facts are hidden in broad daylight, and some have the courage to tell it. Now All of sudden Smiley and West are outcast, even though what they said was factually accurate, and that is Black folk are catching hell. Anybody got a problem with that?
At least they are acknowledging u excist.
Tom Joyner, Al Sharpton and the other hustlers are rightfully outraged when any president ignores blacks the way Obama has. For their acquiesce Joyner gets to be the black radio host of record for Obama and Sharpton receives invitations and an elevated national status. What do Black folk get, Obama T-shirts, and worthless racial pride, THAT’S IT!!!!
Now with that little bit of ugliness aside, lets all go on a Tom Joyner cruise, or go to an Al Sharpton gala,
YOU KNOW HOW WE DO!

Did Rep. Clyburn force Bill Clinton to make the statements that some African Americans considered racist? The fact that his daughter has a high level appointment in the Obama WH, isn't that how politics work in this country? As for his district wasn't it suffering before the 2008 election? What did the Bush administration do for the district? It is up to the people in that district to elect whomever they desire to represent their interest- isn't it?
Why you or anyone else for that matter may not like Rep. Clyburn for whatever reason, he has the right to say whatever he wants to say - believe it or not- this country is enbedded in institutionalize racism- and no one person either Rep. Clyburn or Pres. Obama can or will change that. So get over it and join the real world!

Ethel, your comments are confusing. When did I say James Clyburn didn't have a right to speak? The "it's a free country" response is great, but in 5th grade, using cliche in lieu of actual arguments won't fly. Cronyism and back scratching is "how politics work" here in America, but what was all that hot air from Barck Obama about ending politics as usual?
After years of denigrating white Republicans for these political favors, Clyburn takes the first chance he gets to do the same thing? And somehow this is okay? While black people IN HIS TOWN are homeless? James Clyburn is a old fool...the worst possible kind.
Yes racism exists in the United States. That hardly gives so-called black leaders like Obama and Clyburn the right to exploit it by calling anyone that disagrees with them a racist.
Bill Clinton did more for Black America in 8 years than Obama and Clyburn will if they both live to be 200. Difference? Bill Clinton cares about black people. The only black people Clyburn and Obama care about are the ones staring back at them in the mirror.
That's real.
Maybe you'll make a visit to reality soon?
