The Rev. Bernice King, daughter of the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., has made her first public comments since announcing her departure from Bishop Eddie Long's New Birth Missionary Baptist Church on Tuesday, just days after Long reached a settlement with four men who accused him of sexual misconduct.
"I know there's been a lot of speculation and many comments about my departure from New Birth," King said during an interview on Atlanta's Praise 102.5.
But it wasn't legal drama or sexual misdeeds that drew her away from the church as an elder, she said. After eight years and eight months, her season there had simply come to an end. King said that she was leaving New Birth to pursue "God's calling," not because of the lingering scandal.
The timing of King's departure has drummed up speculation, though. Last week, word of a settlement came down from lawyers for both Long and the men who claimed that he sexually abused them when they were underage members of New Birth. What has yet to be seen is how the settlement will play out for Long or his wealthy church. While King said it was divinity that pulled her from the church's pulpit, it could be the beginning of an exodus from the church's leadership ranks. Long had told his congregants that he would fight the accusations, but instead, he has paid them off to avoid further legal wrangling. Details of the settlement have not been disclosed.
King said her decision would have gone this way irrespective of Long and his very public legal issues.
Since about 2005, King said that she had been wrestling with her calling as a minister and dealing with a number of issues, including the death of her mother, then her sister, a legal fight with her brother and a proposition to head the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, where her father once presided.
"When I came to New Birth, I came for a season and I expected that season not to be quite as long as it was," she said. By January, she explained, she was no longer considering the SCLC position and could no longer mute the voice, God's voice, in her head. A few months later in April, she went to Long and told him that she planned on leaving the church to pursue her own ministry.
"I have to leave to follow the assignment that God has on my life," she recalled telling Long. "He gave me his blessing and supported me in that."
King said the rumors of her "resigning" amid the whirlwind of drama and innuendo surrounding Long's legal troubles were befuddling.
"I heard I resigned," said King. "I was a little confused by that. I've never been on staff. I've never been employed by New Birth... I occasionally worked in the pulpit and preached at New Birth, but that was the extent of my function at the church."
As for those still speculating as to her true motivation to leave the church, in Lithonia, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, she said, "I can't clear up the mind of God. I have always followed what I believe to be the voice of God in my life."
So, what's next for King?
Over the next several months she said she will be building the foundation for what she called a ministry, not a church.
"What God is showing me doesn't look like what people are accustomed to," she said. "One thing that he told me was that I was to raise up kings for the Kingdom."
As for any hard feelings for Bishop Long or the church, King didn't give the slightest hint of any.
"Let me just say this," she said, "during my eight years at New Birth, eight years and eight months, I was tremendously blessed by the ministry of Bishop."

Is it the settlement that is causing her to leave? No money to pay her? It was all about the money with all the members at this church, God left along time ago. All of the so called famous/want- to- be's people in the Black Atlanta community flocked to his man, why because they wanted the message about money he was preaching, some knowing he was like he was, but they turned the other cheek, but now they are all going to other church's seeking the same bad advice. They would do better if they stay at home on Sunday's and keep their money in the bank.
I can't recall the song, but it goes like this" "money you have lots friends , but when the money end the friends leave", they are leaving like rats off of a sinking ship.
What happened to forgiving this "man of God", there is no reason why she is leaving, but the people in her space couldn't see her with staying with a preacher that abuse's boys.
Friends and no money "yes", why can't she be forgiving, I don't think so! After all she is a preacher and all preacher want money.
God isn't talking to her, she needs to leave to save herself, but is sounds good to say this.
I thought christain's are so forgiving, give me a break. God or whatever one wants to call a higher power is in us all. If it sounds to good to be true it is. The higher power doesn't select anyone man or woman to speak to this power speaks to us all, all people have to do is to listen.
Stop giving these men and women your money, they do not any answer's for you. What I see is the problem for church goer's they start to believe in the preacher's, all they say is this, "he can preach", this is is the job.
When I was young I used to hear God calls people to preach now the entire family preach's it becomes a family business. A money business, or it was like that all the time.
This goes for King family as well.

I guess you have been inbued with the unique and special ability to read people's minds and to know what their actual motivations are. If the woman was not employed by the church, then how is she leaving because she will no longer be paid?

True Christians are forgiving to people that ask for it.
Even God says "confess your sins to one another, repent and turn away from your sins and your sins will be forgiven.
Eddie long is still trying to hide and lie about his actions. He will never be forgiven as long as he lives the lie. His life from this point will continue to spiral out of control. watch!

Dj, forgiveness is one thing, condoning wrong and accountability is another. David was King of Israel, when he committed a great sin with Bathsheba and had her husband killed to cover it up, God was furious. He would have stricken David and taken the kingdom from him if it had not been for Nathan openly rebuking him ("Open rebuke is better than secret love....And "them that sin rebuke before all that others may fear")and David repenting ("I acknowledge my transgression, my sin is ever before me.") There is no open rebuke by those who say they love this man's soul and want to see him saved. No acknowledgement of wrong done by him. See the difference between him and Jimmy Swaggert, who was caught in an immoral situation but openly and publicly said "I have sinned! I am sorry!" Isn't that what ministers ask sinners to do all the time. "Thou that condemns adultery, dost thou also commit it?" (Romans 2) "What, shall we continue in sin that grace may abound, God forbid, how shall we that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?" (Romans 6)...You help no one by enabling them in wrong doing. People will forgive when repentance is offered. What they cannot stand is a hypocrite. Further, Ms. King would have greater respect from the community, if she simply said "I am set for the defense of Gospel" and will "Cry Loud and Spare not" and "show my people their transgression and the House of Jacob their sins." That their "blood be not required at thy hand." Peace.

I agree with you totally, however i would like to add this.In 1865 the national black wealth in this
country was less than 1%,nothing has changed,it is still the same. The church while being in the fore
front of our struggles has hampered our people because we embrace the literal text of the bible and are exploited and abused by savvy preachers that are master orators and con men, I almost do not
feel sorry for us because some of us just want to feel good on Sunday and maintain being a fan of jesus and not true disciples of him.And thinking people have to remember that all religions are by faith.People are people and all
that comes with it. Charles

I beleive the title of the song you're remembering is "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" Made Popular by: Bessie Smith (1929) -- During the (FIRST) Great Depression
In your pocket, not one penny
And as for friends, you don't have any
When you get back on your feet again
Everybody wants to be your long lost friend
I said it straight, without any doubt
Nobody knows you, when your down and out

If you haven't heard Long is now heading to Birmingham, AL.
What is going to take to stop these men from taking advantage by preaching to them. God is not in this man the only God he knows is how too get money on a Sunday morning.
I have called all of my family members in Birmingham, Al to let them know about this preacher he is a lying man who prey's on young boy's.
All of you should do the same. If he hasn't made enough money he shouldn't be allowed to do the same in another city; his record should follow his.
