Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich has joined other conservatives in using high unemployment rates among African-Americans as a bid against President Obama, saying that the president has performed so poorly that blacks will vote Republican in 2012.
"No administration in modern times has failed younger blacks more than the Obama administration," said Gingrich during the keynote speech at the Maryland GOP's annual Red, White & Blue banquet in Baltimore.
Gingrich cited high unemployment rates among African-American teenagers and said that the black vote is ripe for the picking.
"Think of the social catastrophe of 41% of a community not being able to find a job. But we have to have the courage to walk into that neighborhood, to talk to that preacher, to visit that small business, to talk to that mother. And we have to have a convincing case that we actually know how to create jobs," he said, as reported on talkingpointsmemo.com. "The morning they believe that, you're going to see margins in percents you never dreamed of decide there's a better future," Gingrich said. "It takes courage, it takes hard work, it takes discipline and it's doable."
Gingrich stepped in it earlier by calling Obama "the food stamp president," but said that if elected he would be a "paycheck president." Gingrich, a former Speaker of the House, invoked the phrase again during Thursday's speech, adding a bit of nuance, suggesting that blacks might have a come-to-Jesus moment this election and distance themselves from the president.
"I will bet you there is not a single precinct in this state in which the majority will pick for their children food stamps over paychecks," he said.
Gingrich's remarks ring similar to those of Rep. Michele Bachmann, who is also running for the Republican presidential nomination and told a group at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans last week that Obama "has failed the African-American community" for not doing more to bolster employment rates.

Gingrich has a long history of making what some have seen as patronizing, bigoted or outright racists remarks about minorities, women and the LGBT communities.
An article last year on mediamatters.org chronicled what it called "Newt Gingrich's history of bigoted remarks," from over the years.
Here's just a taste:
In August Gingrich compared the proposed Islamic center near Ground Zero to Nazis erecting a sign near the Holocaust Museum or a Japanese memorial near Pearl Harbor.
In 2007 he said that bilingual education teaches "the language of living in a ghetto."
And in 1995 he said that women were not fit for front line combat in the trenches because "they get infections."
One of the more offensive of Gingrich's comments came in a 1994 interview with The New York Times, in which he proposed that the government should abandon giving poor young mothers welfare and instead start building more orphanages.
And during a radio show earlier this week with host Laura Ingraham, Gingrich criticized First Lady Michelle Obama's trip to Africa, again invoking black unemployment:
"Well you know when you had 45% African-American teenage unemployment in January in the United States, it would have been nice for the president to have focused on bringing that hope and optimism to young Americans as well as young Africans."

Well, Bush was not my choice, but he was 100 times better than Obama. Unemployment under Bush averaged about 5%, under Obama it's 9%. And the worst deficit under Bush was $400B whereas Obama has been running $1.5T deficits (four times worse than Bush's worst year) EVERY year.
My choice as president is Ron Paul, who wants to cut spending both domestic and military. Republicans like Bush were not my choice, I don't believe in wasting money on the military just as I don't believe in wasting money on useless big government domestic programs.

Dean you're off track or just as calous as those who believe in steal from Paul to pay Peter theory.
Tell us WHY and the reason the GOP doesn't want Newt as their front runner? Could it be that he undermined the GOP agenda? Naw, tell me that ain't so?
Lets talk fiscal responsibility such we-- as this ton of lard talks?, He's the FAT KAT who has not only one but two TIFFANY JEWELER to spend as he pleases, in other words there is no limit he can't spend and as it stands presently he owes over half million on his accounts. Fiscal Responsibility?
Also as the former speaker of the house, who also brought SHAME to the SEAT and positio, if you don't know why? Google it. WE Americans do our research on these candidates.. they all have a paper trail.
I'm not a democrat,IMPO, the PUBS/tea party are ridiculous and a bunch of extreme right wingers- who are LIARS, as the most known in congress as adulters hiding behind a bible, and Newt is no stranger and apart of the pack of adulterers and liars in congress. Newt left his first wife who had cancer for a mistress, who became wife number two, left her for his now third wife, yet fiscal responsibility my A&&! He's a greedy wall street fat kat just like the rest, looking out for those who are just like him and the VERY reason people's penison are gone, basically STOLEN because of BUSH's policy who over his (8) years, if you will on grass roots terms, de-regulated wall street..the rest is HISTORY, stealing from the middle class to benefit the upper class-RICH!

I only say Gingrich is FAR better than Obama. BUT Gingrich is not my choice for president. Ron Paul is my choice for president.
The reason is that, Gingrich, like Bush, is an establishment Republican who favors corporate welfare and expensive military adventures. I am against coporate welfare and wasting money on overseas wars just like I'm against private welfare and wasting money on domestic government employment. So, the BEST Republican is Ron Paul who believes in limited government and the Constitution like I do. If we can't have Ron Paul, I'd rather vote for the Libertarian Party or Constitution Party than Republican.
Gingrich is far from my number one choice, he is just a Democrat lite to me. But a Democrat lite is far better than the leftist socialist Obama we have now.

@geri
The country got into this mess for 3 major reasons:
1) The Community Re-development Act championed by the Democrats to give mortgages to those with incomes who could not qualify with government guarantees, 2) the deficit spending for stupid foreign wars that establishment Republicans like Bush started, and 3) the even worse deficit spending that Obama has championed for trillions in "stimulus" that created virtually no jobs but mostly went to reward those public service unions that voted for him.
Obama took a broken economy when he came in and made it FAR WORSE. Bush can be blamed for wasting money on the military and for putting in a drug benefit for seniors we couldn't afford, but Obama's wasteful spending is FAR WORSE.
Vote for Ron Paul or a Libertarian like him, who believes in cutting ALL wasteful government spending, both domestic and military.

Your position is interesting, but flawed. You must be depending upon Fox News for your information. Sorry to inform you but a recent poll showed that the Fox New's audience is the most misinformed of any new outlet audience.
Misstatements:
#1 There are more Whites who benefit from government social and welfare programs than blacks. That's a fact
#2 There are more Whites working for Federal, State and local Governments than blacks, in many instances 5-6 times as many, that's a fact
#3 We all have a dependence on Federal, State, and Local governments, either directly, and or indirectly, that's a fact. Did you build the road that you dive to work on by yourself?, No you didn't, we did collectively, that's a fact.
So before you start vomiting your hate for the roll of government, and who benefits, take a good look in the mirror. Just saying!

Allow me to say first that you are an incompetent arrogant, and ignorant white fool. I know no one who depends on the government. We all have jobs and work harder than you will ever. Why because we know our history and your practices. Educated people know that there are more whites on welfare, receiving stamps, living in low income housing, are poor and uneducated than there are Blacks. Why....simple answer...there are more of you than Blacks in America. Blacks have plenty of sense which I regret to say you don't have and will never vote Republican no matter what. We are not McCain the pizza boy and we never want to walk in his shoes. I am well connected and leave you and all who think as you this message...Blacks will NEVER vote Republican regardless of who runs. We know what each and every one of you represent and there is nothing you or any other white person can say or do to fool or persuade the masses of Blacks. History does not change. It simply repeats itself. Whites are the oppressors of humans outside of their own race. It's called RASCISM, Discrimination, Prejudice, Bigotry, Hatred, and Hypocrisy. Wishful thinking. Sorry to disapoint but Obama gets the Black vote, HANDS DOWN!!! Dream on.

You gotta be kidding me-blacks vote for a party and leadership who thinks that big business and corporations are going to fix this country--of which, this has been a bloc of people and interests that is predominantly white and nativistic---and who up to this point have been completely dismissive of the black vote. In desperation these racist idealogues will do anything to curry favor towards the middle vote population. What I actually wonder is whether whites like Dean actually belive their own rhetoric or if they are just espousing standard party line crap--because it's all about keeping their power in America?
