Haitian Orphans

Since the epic devastation that consumed Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Jan. 12, Tuesday brought with it a beacon of hope for some little orphans.

Fifty-four Haitian orphans boarded a plane and were brought to Pittsburgh to meet their adoptive parents, while Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and a crew of trained medical personnel stood ready to assist.

I remember the day I fell in love with Michael Jackson.

I was seven years old, and although the ghoulish images of 'Thriller' nearly terrified me and taunted me in my sleep, I couldn't get enough of my M.J. fix. That hunger drove me to challenge my fears and even led me to stay up in the wee hours of the night just to get a glimpse of the video that not only frightened me, but inspired me. This, of course, did not go over well the grandparents.

At seven I was old enough to comprehend the magical power of Michael's art. When he opened his mouth to sing it was like a spiritual revival. He was beckoning me to find my own place in the sun. Every song Michael recorded ministered to me and somehow, I was always able to apply the messages of his songs to my own life.
