Zora Neale Hurston

"Janie knew now that marriage did not make love. Janie's first dream was dead. So she became a woman."

"Janie, Ah hope God may kill me, if Ah'm lyin'. Nobody else on earth kin hold uh candle tuh you, baby. You got de keys to de kingdom."

-- Teacake

"Their Eyes Were Watching God," Zora Neale Hurston's (pictured) fictional exploration of a black woman's self-discovery, was not simply about finding romantic love -- because ultimately that implodes at the end of the story -- but finding her own voice through love.

And it resonates 120 years after her birth, January 7, 1891.

More Black Parents Choose Homeschooling

As No Child Left Behind continued to leave many black children behind, some black parents opted out of the public school system. Some chose charter or private schools, but others felt that the only way they could be assured that their children would get the best education was to teach them themselves.

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Street Is Free From Snow, But Newark Mayor Cory Booker Is Grabbing His Shovel

As the blizzard of 2010 dumped 20 inches on New York City, paralyzing public transportation, flooding the subways, and leaving EMT workers stranded in the snow, those first responded to were the wealthiest. No surprise here.

On Facebook, posters have posted pictures of areas in Bed-Stuy, Bushwick, and other neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens, all untouched by snow plows. As of today, four days after the blizzard first hit, cars remain buried under drifts, the streets are empty of footprints, and trash trucks, ambulances, or any city services have apparently blown away in the wind.

The upper East Side is clean as a whistle as snow plows and crews ready 42nd St for New Year's festivities. It brings to mind people in the Ninth Ward waving white flags as their families drowned in attics as rescue and city workers rushed towards the French Quarter -- mostly to save the structures.

Obama Signs Bill for Post Office to Bear Dorothy Height's Name

In one of many underrated accomplishments of the Obama administration, and one of the more morally symbolic, President Barack Obama signed H.R. 6118 bill on Wednesday, which names the United States Postal Service on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, D.C. as the Dorothy I. Height Post Office.

Height, one of the most significant, but unsung Civil Rights leaders and Chair Emerita of the National Council of Negro Women, worked tirelessly for equality for blacks, women – both white and black - farmers, and poor families, as well as helped desegregate the YWCA, among other accomplishments.

Don King Tries to Bring Bullets Through Airport Security

Nearly everyone thought boxing promoter Don King had retired from the kind of dubiousness that has kept him in court. But according to the Associated Press, he was stopped by security today at the airport in Cleveland, Ohio for having the ammunition for a .38 caliber and .357 firearm in his bag.

Obama's Landmark Nutrition Bill Signed Today

There may not be any more of those delicious bite-size pizzas or that indescribable cafeteria lunch meat after President Barack Obama signed the landmark, "Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010," that aims to improve the quality of school breakfasts, lunches, and other foods sold in schools.

The landmark bill piggybacks off First Lady Michelle Obama's goal of eradicating childhood obesity which includes her "Let's Move" initiative. It will also serve to strengthen nutrition programs that serve young children, like the WIC and Child and Adult Care Food Program.

Apparently Republicans care about the kids, this bill passed with bipartisan support. Even Rachael Ray, who doesn't exactly cook the healthiest food (but it is good), was on hand for a telephone press conference offering her support.

"This is the first substantive step I've seen in my lifetime," Ray said about the bill's focus on young people and nutrition. "I watched the First Lady and President sign it this morning and it gave me chills."

Kind-Hearted Nature May Have Cost Victim His Life

One of the most depraved crime scenarios I have heard in a long time involves a kind-hearted giving man, Herbert Tracy White, who had found redemption and was killed -- dismembered beyond recognition, his limbs severed and stuffed in a backpack.

White had successfully gathered 15 years of sobriety under his belt and was eager to help others battling alcoholism, especially those who were dangerously on the cusp of turning back, facing homelessness, people on the street, or otherwise at-risk.

This giving nature often led him to dangerous areas. His family said, according to a Los Angeles Times article, that he would often leave family functions early to provide rides or help alcoholics in the middle of the night.

Another Racist Gets a New Radio Show

It seems the bounty keeps growing higher for racial and cultural insensitivity.

For Don Imus, a clause in his contract saying he was hired by CBS for "irreverent" and "controversial" programming won him a lawsuit against his former employer and a new gig at FOX, a multi-year deal, where he earns more than ever, on the backs of teenage girls -- stand-out basketball players and scholars -- who were reduced to nappy-headed prostitutes.

Juan Williams' fear of turbans and hijabs lost him respect with intellectuals at NPR, but won him top dollars over at FOX News.

And now, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, who spilled more N-words in five minutes than sympathy fans at a Bristol Palin dance-off, has scored a contract with Sirius XM to conduct a daily 3-hour radio show. The terms of her contract have not been disclosed, but you can bet your bottom dollar she's not losing sleep over her black friends she lost after her rant.

When Going Postal Makes Sense: Racist Customer's Rampage

It's rare that you get your racism so fresh from the Farmer's Market nowadays. I appreciate raw, pure, and organic. So to this racist lady in New England, who so eloquently shows how racism is a mental disease (albeit one that can be cured if you work on it) you're the tops!

When her mail carrier refuses to take back a certified letter that she had signed for but no longer wants, she becomes enraged and goes on a racist rampage. Watch the video that the mail carrier secretly made with his cell phone below.
