On this day, the 45th anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s iconic "I Have a Dream" speech, Barack Obama assured his place in history as the first African American presidential nominee of a major political party.

Obama's acceptance speech was delivered at Mile High Stadium. The doors were thrown open seven hours before he was scheduled to appear. The lines snaked for blocks, across railroad tracks and under a bridge. After a 45-minute wait for the light rail, it took me nearly an hour to get into the stadium.

On Day Four of the Democratic National Convention, there was a "Tribute to the Movement and the Man." That man is, of course, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who 45 years ago today delivered his "I Have A Dream" speech.

Martin Luther "Marty" King III said:

I want to focus on the part of the speech that most often our nation seems to forget. Dr. King talked about a check that came back marked with "insufficient funds." ...

The Big Dog still has his rakish charm. Bill Clinton walked out on stage last night and basked in the delegates' love and chants of "Bill, Bill, Bill." Clinton's pleas for the delegates to "please stop" and "sit down" were as sincere as his lip-biting.

In recognition of the late Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones' commitment to political, economic and racial justice, time was made on Day Two of the Democratic National Convention to celebrate her "life, leadership and legacy."

A "constant voice for justice and peace," Tubbs Jones was the first African American woman elected to represent Ohio in Congress and chair of the House Ethics Committee.

In a moving tribute, Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick said she was inspired by Tubbs Jones' enthusiasm, energy and passion.

She promised to continue the work that Tubbs Jones started:
We stand at a crossroads of hope and change. Let us continue to an America bursting with equality and opportunity for all.

In stark contrast to Day One, the convention center was jumping last night. There was a constant flow of people in the hall and the convention floor was damn near impassable.

I got a chance to interview Florida state Sen. Anthony C. "Tony" Hill Sr. before Hillary Clinton's speech. Tony was an early supporter of Barack Obama. And because Florida is a key swing state, the Florida delegation is seated a few feet from the stage. ...
