Obama to go to Philly for Back-to-School Speech

The White House announced this week that President Barack Obama is scheduled to give his annual back-to-school speech on Sept. 14 during the school day. This year, he will be heading to the Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School in Center City, a magnet school in Philadelphia.

Last year, Obama spoke from Wakefield High School in Arlington, Va., which sparked controversy. Some conservatives believed that his message was going to be political, and many parents decided to keep their children home while the speech was broadcast across the nation.

The speech, however, was one of encouragement and motivation, reminding students to take responsibility for their education:

On Saturday, the family of Billey Joe Johnson hosted a funeral service where close to 1,000 attendees came out to mourn the loss of the high school star running back. On Sunday, the family buried the teenager. But as the weeks continue to pass by, more questions continue to arise. Although autopsy reports from the county and from the NAACP's independent investigation have yet to be released, tidbits of info are still popping up.

A second police report was released last week from Lucedale Police Sgt. James O'Neal, who was the second officer to arrive on the scene after Johnson's death. According to his report, he was responding to a reported attempted burglary where the under-aged victim indentified Johnson as the suspect. While he was preparing to take a statement from the victim and her mother, O'Neal got a call to assist at the site where Johnson was pulled over, a Benndale Carpet parking lot. When O'Neal arrived, Johnson was already dead. The Associated Press also reports that there wasn't a dashboard camera in Deputy Joe Sullivan's, the officer who pulled Johnson over, patrol car.
